Been watching it on Netflix. Is it very true?

The general timeline and big events are mostly true. Some small stuff has been dramatised. Which bit are you wondering about?

Cheesypea · 20/06/2020 00:46

The historic events happened.

Davros · 20/06/2020 00:50

I think there's a lot of poetic licence and filling in. The scriptwriters have to write the conversations for a start. I think it's full of assumptions and educated guesses but it's brilliant

If you Google any specific plot point you’ll probably find an article about it online. So for example searching for “what did Prince Charles actually say at his investiture?” (plot from season 3) will bring you a page full of articles from late 2019 when the episode was broadcast which will give you chapter and verse.

Generally speaking it’s pretty accurate in the stuff that you can Google, apart from Churchill’s secretary Venetia who is completely fictional. The interpretation of the underlying characters is the work of the author, who has created his own fictional personalities.

The answer to your questions are Yes, Yes, Maybe.

Overseasmom100 · 20/06/2020 01:04

I started watching it from the beginning and am shocked at some of the content...those above!

Loving the series Claire Foy is amazing as HRH

I loved the Prince Philip character and found him absolutely hilarious, so I am naturally wondering how much of it is to true and if he is that funny IRL and then I can perhaps forgive him for his "gaffes".

amusedbush · 20/06/2020 11:15

I loved series one and two, then started watching series three but I’ve not taken to Olivia Colman, which is strange because I usually really like her. I’ve need to power through and finish it.

Vanillaradio · 20/06/2020 12:14

I did a lot of Googling! Some stuff is true (yes Princess Margaret's husband was bisexual and promiscuous), some stuff is highly rumoured but no-one knows the truth (a lot of the Prince Philip stuff), some was entirely made up for dramatic effect ( Winston Churchill's secretary dying in the Great Smog.... )

PotteringAlong · 20/06/2020 12:18

The Kennedy’s and their drug problems, mainly from their own doctor, are quite well documented!

BankofNook · 20/06/2020 12:18

I didn't take to Olivia Coleman's version of Queenie either and also usually love her acting. I found her portrayal really unlikeable and cold compared to Claire Foy but then I wonder if that was intentional as she's playing the Queen at a time when the royals popularity was declining.

StrawberryScentedThings · 20/06/2020 12:50

Claire Foy was just too good.

I read a biography of Jackie Kennedy and they were injected regularly Shock they had a doctor who recommended it for his pain issues and for her mental health. The poor woman lost two babies.

notheragain4 · 20/06/2020 13:06

I do a lot of googling while watching! It seems a lot of it (barring obvious historical event stuff) is based off rumours in the press at the time, so it would be hard to pin point exactly how true something is.

notheragain4 · 20/06/2020 13:08

(But also archives and official documentation etc not all press stuff- but some things I don't think there is hard and fast evidence but speculation)

PotteringAlong · 20/06/2020 17:56

Claire foy was amazing.

TheDoctorDances · 20/06/2020 18:29

I found the most recent series to be very bland. Princess Anne managed to stop her own kidnapping in 1974, that would have made a brilliant episode.

mnahmnah · 20/06/2020 18:36

This is exactly why I’ve tried getting into it several times and I haven’t got past series 2. I find it really irritating that I constantly am wondering what is true and what isn’t, googling, going down rabbit holes while I pause it. I think I prefer things that are mainly factual or complete fiction! All of the private aspects of the crown are totally unreliable and guesswork vs factual public events. But then one some these turned out to not be as presented - the journalist that wrote a scathing article about the royal family being out of touch. Not as it happened. Anthony Eden was made out to have a drug problem, not quite as it actually was either.

flapjackfairy · 20/06/2020 18:41

It took ages to get through 3 series in our house because we were constantly googling to see how much was true ! I was shocked how true it mostly was ! Some real eye opener for sure !

Overseasmom100 · 20/06/2020 19:02

Im watching a few more tonight!!! Im just past the Kenndys episode and HRH is pregnant with Edward

The interview between Parky and Princess Anne and Captain Philips is brilliant.

I thought the casting of OC and HBC is series 3 very distracting,

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/06/2020 19:36

Yes I thought that critics saying OC and HBC were distracting was naysaying for the sake but when I watched it, it was true. Vanessa Kirby was perfect as Margaret and HBC falls flat. OC cannot master the right vocal notes At. All.

A lot of it is not only true, but massively toned down.

AnneLovesGilbert · 20/06/2020 19:40

Another one who loves OC but didn’t like her in the Crown at all. S3 was quite hard work in places and I felt a bit flat about it at the end.

Wasn’t Philip’s mum incredible though? Loved that story line.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/06/2020 19:44

I will be disappointed if we don't get the kidnapping in S4, Erin Doherty shone in the role. Note perfect.
