Sandwich replacement bus

First week back and due to less lunch options at school, DD is now having packed lunches for the first time.

Sandwiches and wraps have not gone down well despite her favourite fillings. What can I send her in with that’s alright out of the fridge for 4 hours? I might be overthinking this...

She also has a pot of grapes or berries various, a pot of veg (cherry tomatoes, carrot or cucumber sticks), some crisps and a packet of raisins.

What do your LOs each if the don’t have a sandwich?

I can’t remember what I had as a kid as I only had them one term. Well, remember have a penguin or a club...

Crackers & a few separate triangles of cheese spreads

Pittas with fillings

Bagels

TitianaTitsling · 19/06/2020 20:47

Wraps? Would she be more interested in a build your own(or would she have time?)

iklboo · 19/06/2020 20:51

How old is your DD? DS went of sandwiches when he was little so I got a pack of fun baking cookie cutters and cut the sandwich up with them. Or in fingers with a mini scone like afternoon tea.

iklboo · 19/06/2020 20:51

*off, not if

iklboo · 19/06/2020 20:51

OF!! Bloody hell.

PatriciaHolm · 19/06/2020 20:53

cold pasta? mini cheese scones or muffins? cold pizza?

MiddleClassProblem · 19/06/2020 22:30

It’s definitely a bread thing that she doesn’t like at the mo. She’s 5. Shapes won’t help, no to wraps, will only eat pitta as garlic bread (plus I always rip them when stuffing them).

Pasta might work? I’ll might to a pesto pasta salad trial... I need to mix it up though as she vary rarely eats the same thing two days in a row. She tends to nail it on day one bit day two is over it 😂👸🏻

Maybe I could try cous cous too? Or maybe that’s too messy with little bits everywhere... there’s already enough cleaning at school I don’t want to add to it with tiny sticky grains...

Pasta with little bits of sausage, pasta with tuna and sweetcorn, pasta with cheese, pasta with meatballs - could be quite varied with pasta, I think it's a good shout

Alternatively, maybe a slice of pie or quiche?

buckeejit · 19/06/2020 22:40

Cream crackers? Crackerbread? With cheese. Bigger pasta pieces with pesto. Sausage rolls. Pancakes, (thicker dropscone type), boiled eggs. Fritatta?

AdaColeman · 19/06/2020 22:42

Savoury muffins, with finely chopped cheese or tomato or courgette grated. BBC Food will have recipes.

Squares of cold pizza.

Slices of tarte flamard, basically a sheet of pastry with vegetable/cheese topping.

Slices of cold fritatta.

Mini quiche, jam tart size.

Crockodoodle · 19/06/2020 22:46

Are you allowed Pesto in lunchboxes, I'm fairly certain ours banned it but guess that could be child specific

RaininSummer · 19/06/2020 22:46

Cold fish fingers.

Different shapes of pasta are different foods to 5 year olds.
CoodleMoodle · 19/06/2020 22:48

DD(6) is extremely fussy and the lunchbox is/was a struggle! She went off sandwiches (and she'd only have jam anyway), so used to have cream crackers with cheese or a croissant instead.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 19/06/2020 22:49

My DD will only eat PB and J sandwiches, crackers with butter or mini wraps with just butter on.

So we just do one of those and then cherry tomatoes, cucumber sticks or the mini cucumbers you can always get in Lidl. Some grapes or berries, cheese string or babybel, yoghurt pot or tube and sometimes a slice of malt loaf.

Buckingham1988 · 19/06/2020 23:00

Freeze a yoghurt tube it will keep everything colder and be defrosted by lunch.
A small treat piece of flapjack, slice of malt loaf or chocolate rice cakes - I always told mine you have to have eaten everything else before you eat the treat.

MiddleClassProblem · 19/06/2020 23:02

Different shapes of pasta are different foods to 5 year olds. not mine I’m afraid.

Good point about checking if pesto was ok. I think pine nuts are a different genealogy or whatever and considered seeds but maybe not worth the risk.

Are cold fish fingers or egg ok to be out that long? I particularly worry about the latter although she would only have the white so maybe less smelly at least.

They aren’t allowed any chocolate or sweet treats

MiddleClassProblem · 19/06/2020 23:03

Raisins are the closest and possibly a jam sandwich but she wouldn’t eat that 😂

Weird kid would eat a pot of fennel seeds though...

Frozen frube might be the key!

Zisforstripyoss · 19/06/2020 23:06

My 5 year old loves a ham & cheese or cheese & tomato croissant. Also cold pizza is a massive hit.

My 9 year old likes a pasta salad with ham & sweetcorn.

GreyishDays · 19/06/2020 23:07

I wouldn’t worry about any food out for a few hours, unless it’s a heatwave. It’s just room temperature. Well maybe shellfish.

StayAlert · 19/06/2020 23:10

Cheese and crackers
Hummus and breadsticks
Little wooden skewers with cheese, cherry tomato, ham, whatever you have in fridge (my kids will eat anything if it's on a stick!)
Cheese spread / Philadelphia and ritz crackers
Tortilla ( eggs cooked with cooked veg/ potatoes/ leftovers)
Pasta salad- pesto pasta, tuna and sweet corn pasta etc

MiddleClassProblem · 19/06/2020 23:10

It does say 31 degrees on Thursday! Maybe 4 frubes that day...
