I love academic!Twitter for many reasons, not least of which is that they will extend their arguments with journal articles. Like this one about the correlation between people who refuse to wear (as distinct from those who are medically exempt from wearing) masks & those who exhibit a lot of the traits found in sociopaths... Thought, however, this thread would be a wiser place to share it than MN more generally, because I’ve not the energy for hundreds of people with no reading comprehension skills to attack me for calling them a sociopath because they can’t wear a mask...
Speaking of the “can’t wear a mask situation”, has anyone else wonky of lung found themselves frustrated by how Asthma UK has worded their guidance? Obviously you don’t want people having asthma attacks left right & centre; & an alarming number of people are apparently totally unable to discern if they’re having an asthma attack or if they’re (eg) SOB because of exertion but there’s no airway restriction; but I’m hugely frustrated by all the people announcing they’re exempt from wearing a mask because they have asthma - “don’t/you shouldn’t wear a mask if you have asthma” being how (not entirely unreasonably, tbf) they’ve interpreted the guidance. It’s a vanishingly small number of people whose asthma will be worsened by mask-wearing: main issue is people panicking at any [perceived] restriction breathing. Lots of people could find symptoms alleviated by wearing right type filter mask. And instead have oceans of people declaring themselves exempt apparently mostly without even trying - putting themselves at more risk of actually getting the thing! It’s horrible when you get breathless in one, but the idea of sitting about the haematology unit for 7 hours (hopefully infusions won’t take as long next time admittedly...) without one is way worse. And unlike the people with COPD so bad their lungs absolutely CAN’T cope with a mask, none of the noisily-exempt-because-asthma crew seem on for visors. Which you’d think they would be, what with Covid-19 being a lung-wrecker
Gah. Am a grumpy article, sorry - just v frustrated, esp thinking of those of you [probably] having to go back into work environments where you can’t space & masks aren’t being supported (though ofc I understand the issues they cause for people who are d/Deaf, or have hearing loss - or even “just” [like me] have issues with auditory processing so we can’t use visual feedback to help us sort out the information received).
@OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack
Very glad nobody was hurt - must have been terrifying having a house fire so close to something like a petrol station or whatever flammable/explosive industry you must be basically on top of to get a three appliance response to a dwelling fire. Lucky you’re not somewhere they’ve lots of appliances off the run at weekends, too.
@Anewuser
I’m looking on it as the trade-off for the General Awesomeness if we overlook the gang violence etc that is my wee corner of London. And thinking about JUST how good it’ll be to get to go out when I finally can. My walking is getting increasingly wonky the longer I’m indoors though, despite my best efforts, which is a PITA.
@OrganTransplant123
Am glad you’ve been able to see your friends in a way that works for you. That’s the thing, isn’t it - everyone working out what works (best) for them & just trying to get by as well/far/much as we can. Hope your DCs’ return to school goes well & is as low-stress as it can be.
Speaking of, @Outnumberedwoman - have you had any news of a place for your wee one yet? I know schools are back for you from the 31st; & special schools meant to be on the 24th (as well as P7/Y12/Y14 & vulnerable children) so have my fingers crossed & am holding my thumbs. Would your MP or MLA be any use if you were to contact them?
