I hope this unimaginative thread title doesn't put off all the amazing posters from this group!

As we transition into this new phase things could get interesting....

Still at home. Had my boob op yesterday. Just had the port removed and sealed. So sore though, although the Nuffield was nice. Then today got a letter from the nurse at gp surgery. My blood sugar is too high apparently and I need a blood test. FGS. I've had a million tests and my hba1c is 51 which is bloody good control. The hospitals and surgery just don't communicate. Sick of needles and swabs and other tests.

Anyway. I'm going back to the workplace 5th September with the rest of the wfh'ers and I'll carry on here for the next couple of weeks. I am dying (not literally) to get back to some semblance of normality. Kept my annual leave as booked for October and going to see my son for a week.

And the stupid surgical stockings are hot! And my youngest son hasn't got his BTEC results as they've all been pulled. Aaaaargh!

Venting finished now Grin How is everyone else doing? BlushThanksThanks

Egghead68 · 20/08/2020 17:12

I hope you recover quickly @Babysharkdoodoodood Flowers

Anewuser · 21/08/2020 06:58

@Babysharkdoodoodood, get well soon.

Your poor son, government should be ashamed of their handling of exam results. I hope he hears soon. This is one time I'm grateful my 18 year old is severely disabled so we're not going through it.

I'm in the school group getting ready to go back to work in 10 days. Have been going out for a long walk each day so I'm not suddenly overwhelmed by seeing people again.

BatSegundo · 21/08/2020 07:32

Do you work in a school @Anewuser? That must be a daunting prospect.

I'm feeling very nervous about the DC going back. Especially as eldest is starting secondary school. How is everyone else with DC feeling about school returning? Anyone in Scotland done it already?

Anewuser · 21/08/2020 08:45

@BatSegundo, yes work in school. It seems strange that you have to wear masks to go into shops but no one's to wear masks in class, where we'll be spending long periods in close proximity. The only thing keeping me grounded is looking at the local infection rate. There are only a few new cases each day so I'm keeping optimistic that it stays that way.

I am looking forward to some sense of normality though.

BatSegundo · 21/08/2020 10:39

Yep, just been for a blood test. Waiting room that normally sits 20 has 3 chairs miles apart and sanitised between patients. Everyone in masks. Symptoms checked before entry is allowed. Receptionist behind a screen. All felt very safe.

And a million miles from what schools will be like!

Flowers to you @Anewuser and any others deshielded into a school or factory. Like you, I am looking at the low local numbers and deciding that the chances of getting it right now are small and holding onto that. All the best for September.

Sorry to have vanished so completely: The Donkey Of Destiny gave me a quite spectacular (& uncalled for) kicking.

Like lots of you I’ve still only been out to hospital appointments. And have been told I’m to keep shielding. Which... is a bit tough. Am lucky that most of my friends (& family) are brilliant about it & remind me in a nice no-pressure way they can’t wait to see me when it’s safe; but it’s rubbish Missing Stuff. Also, am a bit inclined to act the anchorite without excuse of pandemic; & have discovered I’m actually getting more scared of Other People, not less. Possibly because Other People keep being great eejits in my vicinity. That noise? It is an entire tiny string section, because a mere violin would not suffice...

Am really pleased some people are Going Adventuring - whether that’s to the shops or into a garden (hopefully with the owner’s permission, but we’re nothing if not used to living dangerously...) or to a NT property or just For A Walk.

Am also v sorry so many people are having worrying-stressful times over return to work &/or school; & assorted health stuff; & That Damn Donkey basically being exceptionally antisocial. No polos for him...

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 23/08/2020 07:43

well, we had a housefire yesterday tea time. all very dramamtic, 3 fire engines, thankfully contained to one room and no one hurt. lots of damage, i mean everything in that one room is unsalvageable but it could have been worse, a lot lot worse

Anewuser · 23/08/2020 09:49

@BatSegundo, thank you. x

@MarieVanGoethem, good to see you back. Sorry it's still not safe enough for you to be able to venture further than the hospital. I'd like to say maybe you'll be able to get out soon but I think that unlikely.

@OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack, that sounds incredibly scary, good to hear no one was hurt. What started it? Are you still living there? As a child, our school caught fire and I can still remember that smell afterwards.

OrganTransplant123 · 23/08/2020 14:18

Blimey @OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack That must have been so frightening. Can you stay in the house?

@MarieVanGoethem Glad your friends are understanding. Mine have been very nice about meeting outside only.

How are those with DCs feeling about the schools going back? I’m a bit nervous but planning on sending them. DH will be there anyway!

MarieVanGoethem · 23/08/2020 19:20

I love academic!Twitter for many reasons, not least of which is that they will extend their arguments with journal articles. Like this one about the correlation between people who refuse to wear (as distinct from those who are medically exempt from wearing) masks & those who exhibit a lot of the traits found in sociopaths... Thought, however, this thread would be a wiser place to share it than MN more generally, because I’ve not the energy for hundreds of people with no reading comprehension skills to attack me for calling them a sociopath because they can’t wear a mask...

Speaking of the “can’t wear a mask situation”, has anyone else wonky of lung found themselves frustrated by how Asthma UK has worded their guidance? Obviously you don’t want people having asthma attacks left right & centre; & an alarming number of people are apparently totally unable to discern if they’re having an asthma attack or if they’re (eg) SOB because of exertion but there’s no airway restriction; but I’m hugely frustrated by all the people announcing they’re exempt from wearing a mask because they have asthma - “don’t/you shouldn’t wear a mask if you have asthma” being how (not entirely unreasonably, tbf) they’ve interpreted the guidance. It’s a vanishingly small number of people whose asthma will be worsened by mask-wearing: main issue is people panicking at any [perceived] restriction breathing. Lots of people could find symptoms alleviated by wearing right type filter mask. And instead have oceans of people declaring themselves exempt apparently mostly without even trying - putting themselves at more risk of actually getting the thing! It’s horrible when you get breathless in one, but the idea of sitting about the haematology unit for 7 hours (hopefully infusions won’t take as long next time admittedly...) without one is way worse. And unlike the people with COPD so bad their lungs absolutely CAN’T cope with a mask, none of the noisily-exempt-because-asthma crew seem on for visors. Which you’d think they would be, what with Covid-19 being a lung-wrecker Hmm Gah. Am a grumpy article, sorry - just v frustrated, esp thinking of those of you [probably] having to go back into work environments where you can’t space & masks aren’t being supported (though ofc I understand the issues they cause for people who are d/Deaf, or have hearing loss - or even “just” [like me] have issues with auditory processing so we can’t use visual feedback to help us sort out the information received).

@OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack
Very glad nobody was hurt - must have been terrifying having a house fire so close to something like a petrol station or whatever flammable/explosive industry you must be basically on top of to get a three appliance response to a dwelling fire. Lucky you’re not somewhere they’ve lots of appliances off the run at weekends, too.

@Anewuser
I’m looking on it as the trade-off for the General Awesomeness if we overlook the gang violence etc that is my wee corner of London. And thinking about JUST how good it’ll be to get to go out when I finally can. My walking is getting increasingly wonky the longer I’m indoors though, despite my best efforts, which is a PITA.

@OrganTransplant123
Am glad you’ve been able to see your friends in a way that works for you. That’s the thing, isn’t it - everyone working out what works (best) for them & just trying to get by as well/far/much as we can. Hope your DCs’ return to school goes well & is as low-stress as it can be.

Speaking of, @Outnumberedwoman - have you had any news of a place for your wee one yet? I know schools are back for you from the 31st; & special schools meant to be on the 24th (as well as P7/Y12/Y14 & vulnerable children) so have my fingers crossed & am holding my thumbs. Would your MP or MLA be any use if you were to contact them?

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 23/08/2020 19:58

we can stay in the house, thankfully the fire was contained to one room as the door to that room was shut so the rest of the house is undamaged. had to have the gas and electrics checked and the window to the room affected has had to be boarded out as its completely unsafe and will need the whole thing replacing and its a big bay window. Im wheezy and coughing a lot because of the smoke but im on the phone in the morning to the gp to get a check over with them. I suspect ive got an infection brewing from the way the back of throat tastes and the wheeze ive got, i only normally wheze when ive got an infection. rapid onset this time but i have just been in a house fire so im not surprised by it

UnholyStramash · 27/08/2020 22:32

Hello again, everyone. I’m okay, going out a bit but cautiously. TBH finding it a bit scary OUT THERE but I need to persevere. In the area of Scotland that’s got a major outbreak linked to a chicken processing place. Thankfully though we’re at the other end of the county and I plan to keep it that way. Going out next week for my first ‘ in health centre’ bloods since I began shielding. Almost looking forward to seeing the old place again and walking through the centre of town. The nurse I’m seeing is chatty so I’m hoping for some local ‘news’. My two sons I was pining for during shielding have been - and have gone back today. Sob. It was lovely having them here. We celebrated the eldest’s birthday all of us together which made a change for us all. He’s 30 now. Wow, how did that happen? They plan to come back again soon - I feel no desire to travel down to see them. Big city, too scared.

My other news - I went to the dentist yesterday due to having toothache. He couldn’t find a problem. I was a bit vague as the pain felt like it was everywhere so it’s possible I pointed to the wrong fang. Since then it much more localised and I know definitely which tooth is the problem. BUT I’m scared to go back - various things said/done/not done.
For example - Dentist: I suppose I could give you antibiotics but it might be a bit soon for that. Next week if it gets worse might be better.
Me: You know I’m immunocompromised?
Him: No
Me, but in my head only: (it’s in my bloody notes)
Ages later, after we’d talked around the subject a bit more, he asked me why I’m immunocompromised.

While he was looking in my mouth he didn’t have his mask on properly - it wasn’t over his nose. While we were chatting after he took it right off - that was okay as he was 2 metres away and I am deaf so it was good being able to lip read.

The thing that gets me is they wear more PPE in ‘normal times’ - usually visors & goggles for their own protection, but this time only a grubby wee mask. There’s also a problem over NHS patients (which we are). They have the PPE for private patients and can do ‘poor people’ (my cynical words) in emergencies - apparently they could do emergency AGP (aerosol generating procedures) from 17th August but don’t have the PPE. I don’t know how bad this pain has to get before I can get treatment. It’s actually worse since yesterday (I’ve got pain when I lie down now, slept badly as a result) but I’m wondering if I can delay till Monday before I go back. But I don’t want to get I’ll, develop an infection. Aargh.

Oh well, thanks for listening ladies. I wish you all well. The times continue to be weird IMO.

SistemaAddict · 29/08/2020 07:44

Today we are having to get the bus and go to a shop for the first time since March. I'm very anxious. It's for school uniform that I can't get delivered. I have to take all the dc with me as no o e to look after the others. Where's the Valium?'

Egghead68 · 29/08/2020 07:47

Hope everyone’s doing OK.

I’ve been inside buildings twice this week for the first time (once for vaccinations, once for cosmetic treatment). I felt quite on edge as the staff were sloppy with the mask-wearing/ventilation/limiting numbers.

I’m trying to get vaccinated against everything I can, hoping that there might be some general immune response that helps a bit with Covid-19 (if I am unlucky enough to get it again this winter).

Otherwise I am still staying indoors alone apart from twice weekly outdoor exercise.

I’m finding it hard to interpret the stats at the moment. Some seem to suggest numbers are stable and some that they are rising.

Have good bank holiday weekends!

Egghead68 · 29/08/2020 07:48

@Bercows can you get a local volunteer to pick up the uniform for you instead?

Egghead68 · 29/08/2020 07:51

Sorry about your tooth @UnholyStramash and the less than great dentist. I hope you get some relief soon.

SistemaAddict · 29/08/2020 08:04

They need my signature as I get help from the council to get the uniform and they couldn't do it any other way. They weren't helpful at all despite knowing my situation.

Anewuser · 29/08/2020 08:07

Morning all

@Bercows good luck with your school uniform shopping. You can do this, you're in control. I hope the shop has good SD.

Well done @Egghead68, you're a brave person and good idea taking all preventative measures you can.

Happy bank holiday weekend.

SistemaAddict · 29/08/2020 10:33

Thank you. Back home already so it was a quick trip. Hardly anyone on the bus wire a mask or if they did they had it under their nose and everyone gave us weird looks. I've not missed the outside world at all. At least dd2 now has her blazer, skirt, jumper and only needs her tie which I have to get from school. They've made everything as difficult as possible this year it seems.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 29/08/2020 12:51

I'm going out for a walk! Woohoo. All surgery finished and back to the control room on Saturday. (Not so woohoo ). Still seeping from my wound under my armpit so going to see breast care nurses on Tuesday to get some more dressings.

But going to collect my own prescription this afternoon for the first time since March. Then build up my walks again. Been on my butt for 4 months now with the various bits and bobs I've had done to me.

But have managed my blood sugar down to pre diabetic levels. Yeay!

Egghead68 · 29/08/2020 13:08

Woohoo @Babysharkdoodoodood!! Enjoy your walk.

Well done on mission accomplished @Bercows. I’ve not missed the outside world either. I do wish people would wear their marks (properly).

Thanks @Anewuser.

Egghead68 · 29/08/2020 17:55

I’ve got a bee in my bonnet today about why Tesco are charging £5.50 for priority (shielding) 6-hour slots in my area and £3 for flexisaver 4-hour slots. They are refusing to reply on Twitter. It’s looking a bit discriminatory to me.

Teaistheanswer · 29/08/2020 18:01

Happy bank holiday weekend all!
Lots of people being very brave in all sorts of ways. I braved the school building last week with the two other members of staff I work closest with. It felt very strange at first but I was quite surprised at how little had changed since I was there over five months ago! Back for real later this week. Mixed feelings really - looking forward to getting back to something of a normal routine but very apprehensive about a whole class full of people (both little and big Grin) and a whole list of new guidelines to get my head round whilst trying really hard to keep away from everyone! I think I'll look a bit like a startled meerkat for most of my day Confused

tobee · 29/08/2020 18:03

I happened to see that just earlier @Egghead68 . I saw that about flexi saver with Tesco. What is flexi saver? Is it something you have to sign up to or what?
