Nice teacher thread

Playdonut · 19/06/2020 12:07

I promised a prolific poster named Jimmygrimble that I would start a thread about the nice teachers as soon as I met one. Well today I spoke to a TA acquaintance, who said that they are all desperate to get all pupils back to school with no distancing 😮, that they know this has been hard on parents 😮 and then gave my kids a high five to prove that they dont all think our kids are disease vectors 😮. There are still some nice teachers/tas out there! So I thought this thread could be a space where we share the nice things teachers have said or done during lockdown.

We had a knock at the door and it was our dd's lovely reception teacher

She wanted to drop some new reading books in for her as she'd just moved up a book band

I was very grateful as the ones on the kindle just aren't the same as a proper printed copy

Playdonut · 19/06/2020 17:11

Well this didnt go as well as expected but I tried!

Ah Playdoughnut I’ll join in. My DSs teachers are amazing. Esp their MFL teachers. They are going above and beyond to make lockdown learning fun. I dread to think what they have spent in costumes, props and face paints. Grin
My youngest is only starting school in September but his school have been in touch to let us know they can’t wait to meet him.

All the teachers at my DDs' school have been amazing. They're lined up at the gates each morning waiting for their bubbles with big smiles. Seriously they're awesome.

I don't think you tried that hard tbh.

Mintjulia · 19/06/2020 17:28

My ds's lovely form teacher, Mrs Ellison.

The schools may be closed but she's always there on Teams, checking the dcs are ok, not struggling, making them laugh.

Well no, all I did was start a thread and then bump it once, I was never claiming I climbed Everest 😂. But it was my first positive interaction with a teacher since lockdown started so I started the thread I promised to start 🤷🏿‍♀️

My colleagues and I had a laugh today. We noticed when we started back more we were all very distant. But we've physically become so much more relaxed the past few weeks as we've returned and had no cases etc.

We are special ed so no real SD with kids anyway but we have PPE for feeding and personal care etc.

People are fearful but once back o think parents will also feel the same.

I can't wait for normality! There will still be plenty of restrictions on what we can do but just being present has improved my MH so much and I really can't wait for students to have the same feeling.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 19/06/2020 22:46

Your definition of a 'nice' teacher is concerning.

You want them to disregard social distancing, not want it and give high fives while we are still practicing social distancing.
And you want them to want whole classes back while the SAGE and other advisors are saying SD is still required, and the arguments towards reducing it, let alone removing it, are all economic based, not risk based.

Interesting. And worrying.

YoungsterIwish · 19/06/2020 22:51

Our teachers were great, putting up lesson plans for the week on Seesaw, including fun stuff like jokes, stories, show and tell, correcting everything sent back, no pressure on getting everything completed, ideas for sports day at home and virtual school tours.

And lovely goodbye messages today praising the children for all they did, as now on summer holidays. Woohoo. (Ireland).

JimmyGrimble · 19/06/2020 22:52

Well I’m honoured donut.
Strangely, I don’t get a mention in the ‘nice teacher’ category. I am nice. Really really nice.

Yes that was what I took from the OP as well.

Also frightening that 'not having caught anything' seems to make people think that they are therefore immune.

myfurloughedfriend · 19/06/2020 23:01

My DSs teachers were fantastic when he went in for his one day this week (y10).

Head was waiting at the gate to welcome everyone, smiling teacher waiting with a thermometer to check the kids temperatures before they got out of the car, and the welcome from his tutor at the doors to the hall was awesome, just so happy to see the kids. Really made me happy he was going in.

All socially distanced, but happy to be there and really making an effort.

OP's acquaintance is a twat.

A much more concise summary than mine above. :)
Rainuntilseptember · 19/06/2020 23:06

It's hardly surprising that teachers know this has been hard on parents given how many of them are parents.
What is your job OP, and I'll let you know if I have met any nice ones?

Calibrachoa · 19/06/2020 23:14

There are still some nice teachers/tas out there! Bit of a snide thing to say as it suggests most aren't.

Lxx16 · 19/06/2020 23:17

As a teacher, who hasn't worked the pandemic due to being on maternity leave, I am so amazed by my colleagues who have been working throughout. Who have been in with their key worker bubbles and are now in school with Year 6 and key workers.

And I may be the minority but come September I want to see all 30 of my class back in and some normality to resume where they can draw a picture and not be afraid to bring it in, to hug a child if they are upset and to give hi fives!

I've also emailed my new class to introduce myself as I was only in school until Christmas so I don't really know them and to put their parents at ease that I am so looking forward to getting them back to school and teaching them!

There are some good teachers put there and the bashing they have received is horrific! Even now on this thread you are questioning the OP!

Shame as the OP set out with great intentions thanking people who work a thankless job.

ohthegoats · 19/06/2020 23:19

The only nice posters on mumsnet happen to also be teachers or other school staff.

Anecdotes are true facts.

Chinny reckon.
And I doubt your comprehension skills if that's what you took from the OP.

CallmeAngelina · 19/06/2020 23:29

Gee, thanks. Just "some?"

Playdonut · 20/06/2020 00:37

It was supposed to be a nice thread. Genuinely. It was meant to reassure those of us who have had only negative experiences of teachers during lockdown that there is some hope. It was also supposed to reassure the teachers that even posters who they claim are the worst teacher bashers ever are actually just scared parents searching for any sign that their kids will be welcomed in school one day. Seems like I failed on both counts. My sincere apologies.

OP it was fine except for the high five part. Fair play if the TA wanted to do that but a lot of people wouldn't feel comfortable doing that themselves at the moment, child or adult. You can make children feel welcome without physical contact. Our children have been really happy in their bubbles while social distancing.

Rainuntilseptember · 20/06/2020 01:05

OP give your head a wobble. Your last post is worse than your first.

Yep. My children would hate that and feel pressured to comply.

I would be seriously unimpressed with a teacher or TA who did this.

No one should be encouraging others to go against guidelines.
