Thought someone might be glad of the news.

Thank you for posting that Maiden.

Pugsrus · 19/06/2020 10:56

I’ve just booked Cornwall from 4 July ,not sure if it’s to early virus wise

Rhine · 19/06/2020 10:59

Just because it’s open doesn’t mean you should be travelling, presumably this mean shops etc? It doesn’t mean English tourists should be pouring in their thousands.

Why do so many posters think they are entitled to a holiday on Mumsnet? I’ve completely written off going away in 2020.

RightIsRight · 19/06/2020 11:05

Rhine

If it's allowed then they have every right to go.

TDogsInHats · 19/06/2020 11:08

Maiden wow thank you. Very good news, my DS lives there on his own and I'm aching to visit him. Because we live outside of Wales we've been eagerly awaiting the day. Smile

Rhine · 19/06/2020 11:13

Actually you don’t have a ‘right’. A holiday isn’t a right. Locals in tourist areas don’t want masses of tourists arriving.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 19/06/2020 11:20

Thank you - we've been eyeing up taking a short break somewhere within 3 hours drive, and bits of Wales are near enough for us. We don't mind if nothing is open - just walks in a different area would be lovely.

How do you know that locals don't want tourists? Many areas in Wales rely on the income that tourists bring, who are you to decide that they can be bankrupt this year because Rhine thinks that nobody should go any where ever again. Tell the truth, you're Mark Drakeford aren't you
WowLucky · 19/06/2020 11:41

Have they told the Welsh?

I have a FB friend, an ex colleague in London, who moved back to the North Wales touristy village she grew up in when she had her children. Seeing things on her FB today, the locals are furious, although I imagine there must be some who will be glad to have the income back, they seem to be keeping quiet.

WowLucky · 19/06/2020 11:43

"Locals in tourist areas don’t want masses of tourists arriving"

Maybe they shouldn't open their holiday businesses then? That'll stop 'em.

mamapants · 19/06/2020 12:01

I live in a tourist area in North Wales and want tourists back. We need tourism.

What about those whose business and livelihoods depend on tourists? Are you speaking for them too?

L0bstersLass · 19/06/2020 12:04

The five mile travel rule may be relaxed from 6th July. It hasn't been clarified yet how far it will be relaxed. Potentially just for travel with Wales. First Minister announcement at 12:30 today.

Purplequalitystreet · 19/06/2020 12:05

@Rhine they do have a right, whether you like it or not

Lots of businesses are desperate for tourists to return. If individuals aren't happy they can stay at home.

Not just Wales, people in tourist areas across the U.K. are concerned as well. Have you seen the thread about holidays in Cornwall? Several posters who live there have asked for people not to holiday there.
Witchofzog · 19/06/2020 12:08

Maybe some people need tourism to keep their businesses afloat. You don't speak on behalf of everyone in Wales Rhine. And if the government advice is that you can now do this then people are going to want to. Life has been shit for many over recent months - having something to look forward to can make all the difference.

Wales isn’t a shop! Wales has always been “open”. Just like England has always been “open”.

WowLucky · 19/06/2020 12:11

Yes, I've already decided I'm not going anywhere touristy, even given the opportunity. I don't want to go on holiday and feel like I'm not welcome. Having seen many posts from locals in these areas, I suspect that was always the case but I was less aware how much they hated us before.

For the next couple of years at least, I'm going to make a point of exploring lesser known countryside closer to home.

Some people will be thrilled, others may miss my money.

What a childish post.

No one is saying they don’t want tourists back ever, but locals are concerned which they have a right to be as a lot of these places don’t have enough hospital beds to deal with a massive COVID outbreak. Also it’s still circulating widely in North Wales, two food factories have been closed because so many of the workers tested positive yesterday.

WowLucky · 19/06/2020 12:28

I'm sure not everyone hates the tourists but there have certainly been enough to raise some questions about what the experience will be like. And I didn't say "ever"

Rhine · 19/06/2020 12:34

They don’t hate tourists. They are worried and they have every right to be, a lot of the locals in these places are the retired and elderly. The hospitals in these places don’t have enough ICU beds.

Why is that so hard to understand?

WowLucky · 19/06/2020 12:36

It's fine. They shall have their wish.

tectonicplates · 19/06/2020 12:38

It's less a discussion about rights, and more about the mixed messages that are being given out. We're open, but we're not. The government says yes, the locals say no. We rely on tourism but we hate tourists. It's difficult to understand if we can actually go or not.

Smallsteps88 · 19/06/2020 12:40

I’d be worried too if I was in a touristy spot. We’ve all seen the footage and photos. People are cramming themselves into beaches and popular spots like sardines. There is no social distancing. It’s madness.
