Thought someone might be glad of the news.

If the travel rules are relaxed and holidays are allowed then people have every right to go. Locals can "ask" tourists not to come all they want, but living somewhere doesn't mean you own the area.

rosie1959 · 19/06/2020 12:42

It’s fine and their prerogative to say they don’t want tourists
But unfortunately they will also have to accept multiple businesses going bankrupt and unemployment

buffyp · 19/06/2020 12:43

Rhine I heard the Welsh minister himself saying tourists would be welcome. Oh and is just English tourists you don’t want as lots of Scots and Irish people like to holiday there too.

LindainLockdown · 19/06/2020 12:47

I have held back on booking a summer break but will now be doing so. North Wales/Anglesey and Cornwall are places I have been to countless times for holidays but I'm not going to be going there for some time due to the open hostility.

However can anyone recommend a seaside area in Great Britain where tourists will be welcome?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/06/2020 12:50

@LindainLockdown I'm hoping to go to Norfolk this summer, not sure what the situation will be like with the locals but we go every year and it's a lovely part of the country.

LindainLockdown · 19/06/2020 12:50

Just seen another thread with exactly this question, I do quite fancy Northumberland, I bet they are a bit more friendly up there.

LindainLockdown · 19/06/2020 12:51

Thanks, will also look at Norfolk, went to the broads as a child - lovely area.

Campervan69 · 19/06/2020 12:58

My plan is to brush up on the local accent and pretend to be a local 😅🤣😆

LovelyLion · 19/06/2020 13:12

North Wales/Anglesey and Cornwall are places I have been to countless times for holidays but I'm not going to be going there for some time due to the open hostility.

Us too. We had a family holiday booked for August (third year in a row) and emailed the cottage owner earlier in the week to let them know we would still like to go, provided the Welsh COVID rules allow it. The response was incredibly rude and they clearly didn't want us to go. So we've cancelled with a full refund and booked a different area. If your economy is going to be largely based on tourism you have to be reasonably pleasant (or at least polite!) to the tourists.

Mamimawr · 19/06/2020 13:16

The First Minister also said that this might not happen if the coronavirus situation changes. So don't get too excited. It might not happen.

starrynight19 · 19/06/2020 13:18

We had a holiday booked in Northumberland in August and they are very keen for us to still come.
Am hoping that’s going to be possible and we can support them whilst reopening their local businesses.

Ifailed · 19/06/2020 13:19

If the Welsh don't want people from other countries visiting, that's their prerogative, though I assume they won't be travelling themselves to anywhere outside of their country?

MaidenMotherCrone · 19/06/2020 13:23

@Ifailed thanks for lumping a whole country together. I'm Welsh living in Wales and I'll just speak for me if that's ok.

I'm happy for people to come.

Speaking as a member of a local tourist group in a coastal area of Wales, I can say that ‘we’ are delighted to be able to welcome back tourists. Our shops and tourist attractions have spent a long time putting measures in place to keep visitors safe.

LindainLockdown · 19/06/2020 13:28

Good for you LovelyLion I would have done the same, and made clear I would never be bothering to book with them again.

LovelyLion · 19/06/2020 14:22

Mumtothelittlefella, it must be really hard for those who are keen to have visitors. We might well visit the area again in future, but hopefully you can understand why people are put off if their only contact is very clearly opposed to visitors. I sincerely hope the tourist industry across the UK can recover from this year.

Brendabigbaps · 19/06/2020 15:49

We have had a cottage booked in Anglesey since last year, the balance was due in early June so I spoke to the owner in May, they asked us not to cancel unless we had to and that we were very welcome as far as they were concerned along with many of the other people in the area.

TDogsInHats · 19/06/2020 15:55

I've just booked for August, quite near where our DS lives. I can put up with a bit of hostility if it means I get to see our darling son. Trouble is, he'll just be returning to work after furlough, but we can still catch up in person.

mamapants · 19/06/2020 16:11

@LovelyLion it is a shame to judge based on one business owner being rude. Plenty of business owners in North Wales are eager to reopen. I know a few air bnb owners who have been keeping a close eye to open.
I understand there was a lot of negativity coming from rural/tourist areas. This was down to fear.

WowLucky · 19/06/2020 16:22

Ok, now I'm scared to go back. That must be OK too?

Sadik · 19/06/2020 16:39

I'd say where I am people feel reasonably happy about self catering opening from the 13th, but there is a lot of bad feeling regarding second home owners who have travelled here during lockdown (to be clear that is very much only a minority of them).

Second home owners are unpopular anyways, because their houses tend to be occupied only 10-12 weeks of the year max (and at the busiest times), whereas self catering will be rented out all year round if the owner can achieve it and most I'd say are full 40 weeks plus - hence bringing trade into the town for vastly more of the year. Basically the only people who like the second home owners are builders & other tradespeople, and them only grudgingly.

But I think by mid July people will be happy enough to see campers & holiday cottages full. (I'm not in the north, though)

Having said that, nobody misses tourists, frankly, other than for their money, and I can't imagine there's a single location out there that genuinely likes them other than for economic reasons. The universal comment has been - it's so bad for the businesses, but so very nice otherwise to just be locals!

NothingIsWrong · 19/06/2020 16:48

My MIL still owns her family childhood home in Wales and we usually spend a good few weeks there every summer. Hoping we can go now at the end of school term, I wasn't sure we were going to be able to go.
