On a on line Cornish newspaper it says beach toilets were open from June ,because of the waste people were leaving on beaches

Of course there’s no law to say you have to be local to go there Confused But shop owners have the right to say who can and cannot come in their shops as long as they abide by the protected characteristics, so of course they have the right to say ‘locals only, no tourists’.

No, I cannot link you to it because it isn’t news. Cornwall is made up of lots of independent shops - they’re the ones who are most likely to either remain closed or operate on a locals only basis.

Supermarkets and big name shops won’t be locals only, but some independent owned shops are operating on that basis, and you won’t know till you get there whether the ones where you’re staying are like that.

It’s not an across the board thing; it’s not “Cornwall is locals only”. It’s simply that Cornwall is made up of a lot of independent traders, some of which have made the decision to only allow locals.

I’m only telling you this to warn you that even if self catering and hotels are allowed to open, shops may well choose not to open and may operate locals only.

It depends entirely on what happens in the next few weeks and also upon the area you’ll be staying in; different places will obviously be different. It’s just best to know as much as you can.

Don’t be so silly.

If they’re operating locals only it’s because they’re worried about the virus and don’t want tourists coming from all over the country spreading it.

That’s their choice. They own the shop, they get to decide who comes in.

ivfgottostaypositive · 19/06/2020 11:51

I think 4th July is a bit close to the date most of the country is working to for more things opening BUT they haven't actually come out and definitely said caravan parks, hotels etc can reopen then?

We are booked for the first week of what would have been school holidays so hoping that it's still going ahead but we are self catering in a cottage. And to be honest after 3 months staring at my own 4 walls I'd be more than happy with a few rainy walks on the beach

Loads of people are already on holiday! You won’t be the first by hundreds.

Grin there are takeaway tea rooms, ice cream parlours, takeaways, McDonald’s, pasties & Fish & Chips.

Just note that you might have to preorder / choose a slot but it’ll be fine.

Barely any toilets are open. But you’ll enjoy beaches & walks. Bring your wellies!

Flowers have a nice time (if you come)

Pugsrus · 19/06/2020 11:56

That was my thought, some rainy walks on a beach will be ok ,I don’t need anything other than the Sainsbury’s

Thanks ..I used to live down there as a child ,miss it so much ,can’t wait to get back ..

Then that’s fine. As I said, obviously big supermarkets and brand names aren’t locals only.

Just don’t go expecting everywhere to be open and don’t be surprised if some of the ones that are are locals only. That’s literally all I’m saying.

Yay a voice of reality (sanity).

I suspect the places that are ‘locals only’ as mentioned by PP are places you wouldn’t want to visit in the first place...

hamsterchump · 19/06/2020 12:17

Whereabouts in Cornwall are you @heartsonacake? I'm in Newquay and nowhere here is insisting on locals only and certainly not asking for proof! Off the top of my head, all our supermarkets are open, all our chip shops are open, McDonald's is open for takeaway, the surf shops etc are now mostly open. More and more restaurants are opening for takeaway every day (The Fistral Stable and The Gardens tea room in Trenance park are some of the latest to start doing this). More toilets are open now but it seems to be only in the daytime, not the evening which is annoying. The national trust car parks at Holywell and Crantock are open. Lost gardens of Heligan is open. The pubs and hotels are closed. Newquay zoo is closed and in danger of being unable to reopen. If you want to know more up to date info on the specific place you're staying in OP the best thing to do is follow the local restaurants/attractions on Facebook and join the local Facebook groups, updates are posted there often. Ignore the craziest member's screeching, the rest of us do. Newquay is a good place to come as most residents aren't Cornish anyway so there's no hope of the self appointed virus stasi recognising everyone or judging where someone lives based on their accent. Also as one of the poorer parts (a recent think-tank has predicted us to be the worst affected town economically by the virus in England and Wales), most of us realise the economic fallout from Covid is likely to hit us much harder than the virus around here. The most vocal anti tourist people I've seen are all either retired or unemployed so have no skin in the game so to speak, many of us are ashamed of them but realise it isn't worth speaking up on the social media echo chambers.

Pugsrus · 19/06/2020 12:18

We love Archie browns in Penzance ,they are doing takeaway if you order in advance,we always go there for a meal or few .
The Lidio are deciding on the 4th if they will open ,I can’t wait to try their hot spot in the pool .
We go every year to Penzance, just love it ,would move there if I could

OP posts:
Pugsrus · 19/06/2020 12:21

Went to Newquay years ago ,nice place .glad to hear things are opening slowly,it’s a worry the longer this goes on ,some places won’t be to open at all again.

OP posts:
ivfgottostaypositive · 19/06/2020 12:22

From what I've seen the places saying "locals only" are small corner shops in small very "local" villages certainly not ones that have a significant tourist trade they can risk alienating

Cornishandnotaprick · 19/06/2020 12:30

Also @pugsrus just know that there is a prolific poster who name changes and likes to slag off Cornish people and try to convince people not to come on holiday. They have caused similar threads to close due to “sockying” (I think that was the term MN used!)

So you might need to take a few MN posts with a pinch of salt.

@KnobChops absolutely Grin

Its actually a bit chilly here today! Brrr.

Pugsrus · 19/06/2020 12:36

Thanks Cornish ,

Whereabouts in Cornwall are you @heartsonacake?

hamsterchump I don’t name change so I’m not comfortable revealing that information, sorry.

I love Cornwall; it’s a beautiful place and I most certainly don’t want to discourage people from coming. My entire point posting on this thread was to manage OP’s expectations.

Obviously different places in Cornwall will be different. In some, lots will be open, in others, hardly anything will. It’s worth being mindful of that, as well as the fact that some locals aren’t happy to see tourists.

I’m not saying they’re right to be hostile against tourists, of course Cornwall heavily relies on the tourism industry, but the reality is that some locals will be hostile and again it’s worth knowing and being mindful of that.

irisnotadaff · 19/06/2020 12:43

Lots of holiday makers here already! House opposite is a second home and they’ve been popping back and forth, I assumed that was allowed?

No, it’s not. No overnight stays currently.
hamsterchump · 19/06/2020 12:53

@pugrus Are you heading to Penzance this time? I think you'll be fine in the larger places like Penzance and again Newquay (may as well bang our drum, I'm obviously invested I want all our favourite places to open up again, it is a little run down but we have seven beautiful beaches). It will be the very smallest villages and then probably only the tiny village shops who can afford to turn holiday makers away, regardless of what they might say online.

ButteryPuffin · 19/06/2020 12:58

I can't imagine many shops will want to turn custom away. As long as you're not behaving obnoxiously like some people in the media (e.g. the ones buying cans and then setting up disposable barbecues in pub car parks, stuff like that) then I think you'll be fine.

WowLucky · 19/06/2020 13:02

I just can't imagine it being any fun. It may be a minority, but there's a vocal minority who are making it clear they don't want you there and even if things are open there will be a lot of queueing and not being able to have the full experience.

I lived in South Wales as a child and the shop/petrol station had different prices for locals to tourists. During the petrol shortages they had "sold out" signs up but were still selling to locals. Of course they know who their regulars are.

I suppose if you usually just use the beach, walk and cook for yourselves it might be OK but not if ice cream, beer gardens and restaurants are what make a holiday for you.

Cornishandnotaprick · 19/06/2020 13:34

@Pugsrus lots of kayak hire has opened up so bring your wetsuits as no wetsuit hire is allowed. All equipment is disinfected between uses. Sounds fun! Smile

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 19/06/2020 13:42

I'm SE Cornwall, coastal town.

Angry locals have very much piped down over recent weeks. I've seen absolutely no sign of shops, restaurants etc serving 'locals only' and don't believe it - no one can even name one place. It's a shoddy rumour in my opinion, our local businesses are desperate to keep going and who would turn away trade.

There isn't a huge deal to do, but then there never is! I hope the weather improves, and that you have a lovely stay. A few days down here would do anyone the world of good.
