We have about 20... but then I work for Amazon in one of the Alexa teams, so they are integral to everything in our home and work life here.

Used for everything already mentioned!

pinktaxi · 20/06/2020 10:16

Finds my phone for me!

InfiniteSheldon · 20/06/2020 10:34

Omg how do you set Alexa to find your phone?

TimeWastingButFun · 20/06/2020 10:40

I'd say find my glasses. I'd say that now!

lucysmam · 20/06/2020 10:41

@InfiniteSheldon ask it to call your phone :)

MrsFezziwig · 20/06/2020 15:51

Didn’t realise it would call my phone - genius!

Khione interesting post. I do feel that in future years they will definitely be used more to assist older people living alone.

AdaColeman · 20/06/2020 16:05

Those of you mentioning the security aspect, is that because Amazon might eavesdrop on your conversations to send you targeted advertising, or because nearby criminals might eavesdrop to discover your personal details?

Or is it more about Alexa linking with other devices without your knowledge, for example to infiltrate your bank account? I don't own an Alexa, but these are points that have occurred to me, and it's interesting that security is mentioned by a few contributors to this thread.

LizB62A · 20/06/2020 16:12

I've got a free one from work to do some technical testing.
I literally only have it switched on when testing.
Now that that project is finished, I think I'll be giving it away - my son is an IT whizz and he won't let me have it switched on when he's home, he's concerned about security and eavesdropping

ratspeaker · 20/06/2020 17:07

I shout at it lot. It doesn't really understand my accent.

DH has it linked to his amazon account so it gives notifications.
He also asks for weather reports, radio stations, music...

draughtycatflap · 20/06/2020 17:10

I’d set up reminders to go out and shake my fist at the local kids.

Inextremis · 20/06/2020 17:21

I'm 61. We've got Alexa in the bedroom, the computer room, the front room, and on both our phones, oh, and on my tablet, too. We use it for adding stuff to the shopping list, looking at the shopping list when in the shops, music, conversions for oven temperatures, alarms, reminders (give dogs their pills), cooking timers, reading my audiobook to me in bed, playing rain sounds or ocean sounds to help me get to sleep, asking random questions, playing Prime video on the Echo Show, doing calculations, asking for spellings, checking the weather forecast, talking to each other between rooms, calling our friends on Skype - oh, and loads of other things I can't think of right now. Not in the slightest bit worried about security issues - why would I be?

Miljea · 21/06/2020 20:59

Our nascent use has ground to a halt, because DS1 who is 'cyber-security' teccy- really, really doesn't want it on.

I haven't yet seen what it can do that our other tech can't.

Don’t need to pretend. Alarm clock, lighting control and radio.
