I’m 57. Why do l need to imagine I’m 60?

I use it in the same ways everyone else on here doesConfused. Why would l not?Hmm

ginandbearit · 18/06/2020 20:38

To ask why did I come into the room ..

BikeRunSki · 18/06/2020 20:41

I principally use mine as a radio, fir listening to music, as a timer and an alarm.

BearSoFair · 18/06/2020 20:42

Spotify
Weather updates
Sports updates
News headlines
Calculations and conversions
Tube status
'Drop in' to another room instead of hollering when dinner is ready

dementedma · 18/06/2020 20:42

I fucking hate it because of security issues but DH bought one. Waste of money. all it is used for is to play music - and we already have devices that do that

AdaColeman · 18/06/2020 20:48

Is it the Dot that you’ve all got? I’d quite like some of these functions, shopping list, nature sounds for instance.

Would you say Alexa was more useful than Siri?

Coldbatteredpuddings · 18/06/2020 20:49

Ours is part of our Sonos sound bar. I use it for timers / alarms and I ask it to turn the TV off when I can't be arsed to look for the controller. That is all. Personally, I'm not a fan of Alexa, I'm sure it's spying on me 🧐

YgritteSnow · 18/06/2020 20:51

Alarms and cooking timings.
Kids use it for music constantly.
Weather sometimes.
Homework questions.
Still haven't managed to work out to link to ocado for shopping lists but suppose we will get there eventually.

IwishIhadaMargarita · 18/06/2020 20:57

Chr king is ailments mean you’re going to die...might stop dm ant mil calling me to tell me they have x issue and know someone who died after having the same thing 🙄

Ragwort · 18/06/2020 21:04

I can't imagine wanting or using one, in fact I don't think I even know anyone who has one Confused. If I want the news, a recipe, alarm etc I can use my iPad or phone. I rarely listen to music ... I would use the radio or play a CD (very old fashioned I know). I use pen and paper to make a shopping list.

Happy to be a Luddite Grin

Silvercatowner · 18/06/2020 21:06

News headlines and weather forecast in the morning. She will play radio 4 during the day. She plays my audio books and will sometimes play radio programmes from the previous week if you ask nicely. I love having music on tap.

LazyFace · 18/06/2020 21:11

Scrape out the inside and put a plant in it. Or use it as a pencil case.

PurBal · 18/06/2020 21:13

Weather. Music. Church of England prayer of the day...

CLCB07 · 18/06/2020 21:13

I listen to music and the radio and use it as a timer.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 18/06/2020 22:05

I'm 60. I remember Ceausescu's compulsory telephones, always listening for the secret police. Just no.

Unescorted · 18/06/2020 22:09

A Christmas present for a relative that thinks more of themselves than I do.

Knotaknitter · 18/06/2020 22:17

Shopping list, multiple named timers, turns on the heating without getting out of bed, news, weather, radio, cups/metric conversion while I have my hands in the flour, routines (one word turns off the table lamp in the living room and turns on my bedside lamp).

"Announce" is good if you have several units, it announces your message from all devices so gamerboy gets to hear that it's food time without me screaming from the foot of the stairs in competition with his headphones.

Fleetheart · 18/06/2020 22:26

I’m 54 and have never seen the need for one; I thought they were just for the youngies; it’s good to understand what us more mature find them good for. What is the best one to get for the kitchen? There seems to be lots of different ones

bookmum08 · 18/06/2020 22:28

Mother in law is 72. She asks Alexa to switch on Radio 2.
All seems pointless to me. She can get Radio 2 via the TV by pressing a couples of buttons on the remote (which she does just fine as she watches lots of telly).

Dollywilde · 18/06/2020 22:29

I bought one for my parents - mum 60, dad 67.

Dad uses it exclusively to play one of five songs by Status Quo, The Eagles or Procol Harum. Every evening.

If my mum gets her act together I suspect it’ll be named as a respondent in the divorce papers Grin

songbirdsings · 18/06/2020 22:34

Music
Timer
Announcing to rooms for dinner etc
Foreign currency conversion
Calculator
Settling debates (age of x etc)
Weather
Train updates
Programmed so it knows which bin has to go out
Reminders

I use it much more than I thought we would

LovingLen · 18/06/2020 22:42

I'm early 60s and use Alexa just for music upstairs, DH sometimes uses Alexa as alarm clock. I have Siri downstairs for my hive heating and music, and to ask things, I prefer Siri. Siri does sometimes sort of wake up and grunt though, I think he sometimes imagines I am calling him but its probably the TV sets him off.

AWryGiraffe · 19/06/2020 08:50

I'm in my 30s and don't get it, none the wiser really after previous posts.

sluj · 19/06/2020 08:56

All of the above plus lots of random questions when we are watching TV eg

"Alexa, how tall is David Tennant?"
"Alexa, how old is David Attenborough?" Etc

It just saves googling.

Miljea · 19/06/2020 10:47

Hmm. Interesting. Thanks for the responses!
