Do you have hobbies? If so, can I ask what?

Lockdown has been a real eye opener for me. I see all these busy bees cracking on with their hobbies - all lockdown did for me was show me that actually I have a very boring life 😳

I had friends who were baking, making blinds, arranging photographs, and gardening.

Apart from reading and my dogs, I don't have anything else. I'm not sure what I would actually do with myself in retirement or with no job.

So, if you have any hobbies, can I ask what they are. Looking for inspiration 😇

Family history, baking, reading, singing in small choir, bit of curtain/blind making, love vintage stuff for the home, so enjoy a good rummage at car boot/charity shop/lowbrow antique places.

PurpleThistles84 · 18/06/2020 00:34

Mostly dot art which I either give away or list on Etsy. Also knitting and playing the sims (video game) for the most. Reading now and again, way too much watching Disney plus and box sets.

Lots of crafting here! Making cards, a scrapbook for an upcoming birthday, and starting to get back into drawing too. Also reading, Netflix, pole fitness so plenty to keep busy. I still miss my kickboxing and salsa classes though...

Baking, running (to off set the baking), gardening, crochet, embroidery and recently reading. I've also started a paint by numbers during lockdown

Ughmaybenot · 18/06/2020 06:31

I ride, I surf and I shoot. Those are the main ones.
I also love baking and reading.

kayakingmum · 18/06/2020 06:33

Kayaking (unsurprisingly). I really like whitewater kayaking, but since having DD and DS I've mainly been on the local flat water river. We will go to Lee Valley white water centre when it opens again.

Always reading and listening to audio books , going to watch football and a couple of gigs a year . Eating out in nice places after a walk around places like Oxford , Winchester, Windsor & Eton where the restaurants are .

During lockdown I have taught myself how to knit , started to grow veggies , resumed sewing after many years , making cushion covers and now clothes .Baking biscuits, cakes, puddings which I never usually do . Reluctantly walking around the village instead of towns and cities.

Reading
Drawing
Gardening
Crochet
Natural history (mostly watching YouTube shows like pbs eons and admiring my couple of amonite fossils)
Baking though haven't done that much as our new kitchen (having moved fairly recently) is pretty depressing. The oven isn't going to know what hit it once the kitchen has been ripped out and a decent one put in.
Gaming, retro video games, rpgs and tcgs

I haven't done nearly as much of these as I would like with homeschooling and getting a much needed new roof put on.

I've read loads though which has been lovely.

Ballet (at least 2 Zoom classes per week) and crochet are my two main ones. Lockdown has allowed me more time to concentrate on them. I've also done yoga on and off, so trying to fit that in too.

I'm also attempting my first jigsaw puzzle and I've bought an adult colouring book to try. I've got more anxious during lockdown, so these other options to help me stay calm/mindful.

Meruem · 18/06/2020 08:54

Reading, gaming, crochet, knitting, sewing, jigsaws, lego, adult colouring, model making, gardening, hanjie puzzles, learning languages. I could do with a few less hobbies as I never have time for them all! Luckily they are all things I can do during lockdown. Outside of lockdown I’d also count travel as a hobby.

Walking, reading and crafts. I also volunteer with Brownies in normal times but we haven't been running that remotely during lockdown because the girls didn't want it.

I never really have time for all the crafts I want to do normally so it's been great having a bit of time (while I would normally be commuting) to indulge myself. I'm normally busy out and about at weekends as well, so that's extra time for my hobbies. I am still working during the week, different routine, but a similar number of hours.

My mum didn't have many hobbies before she retired, but now in normal times she's got things on every day. She volunteers at a charity shop and with Brownies and Rainbows. She swims a couple of times a week. She took up a musical instrument later in life and plays in a group most weeks.

Don't worry about what you'll do when you retire, you'll find things then that appeal to you. Think about what would make you happy NOW, and whether you have the time/resources to be able to do it.

BearSoFair · 18/06/2020 10:14

I play ukulele. Impossible to keep feeling down when you hear a uke!
Getting back into baking to as DD has developed an interest in it.

Gardening - cottage garden/fruit/veg/flowers
Candle making
Travel planning - currently planning a trip to the outback to go glamping. I usually plan a trip once a year.
Pets - bird, cat, dog.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/06/2020 13:23

@PurpleThistles84 - your dot art is gorgeous - I am in awe. I would love to try it, but I suspect I would be utterly useless.

MaMisled · 18/06/2020 13:30

Wildlife photography, walking, dance/exercise, cooking and nutrition, my dogs, knitting to sell online and crime documentaries. My happy, contented life is in permanent lockdown. I'm very anti people!

PurpleThistles84 · 18/06/2020 14:23

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius the hardest part is paint consistency and thankfully decoart Americana acrylic paint is the perfect consistency. Set of dotting tools and off you. Loads of YouTube tutorials and patience. My dot art is nothing compared to what some do, there is a fantastic group on fb called dot art! It’s not as easy as it looks but it’s also not as hard either.

goodwinter · 18/06/2020 14:38

Love these threads! Mine are:

  • Reading (I have a fortnightly Zoom book club with uni friends)
  • Gaming: board games, video games, and Dungeons & Dragons (play 2x a week with a different set of friends)
  • Crafts: cross stitch, embroidery, sometimes crochet
  • Podcasts / Netflix / movies etc
  • Baking
  • DIY (often more of a chore/necessity than a hobby, but it's very rewarding anyway)
  • Walking/playing with/cuddling my dog
