I think there are places you can go for a private ASD assessment - is that what you mean?

augustyellow · 17/06/2020 19:14

Yes because I need the diagnosis to get the help

Two of our children were assessed by Daphne keen. She is a nhs consultant in St George’s and also does private practice.

If you give your area then people may be able to suggest places that may do an assessment.

However it is often very hard to get a diagnosis while a toddler because it is obviously going to be harder to differentiate what is just normal development for that age.

And don’t forget even if you do get a diagnosis that doesn’t change who the child is or mean that the struggles won’t be there. Perhaps if you tell us what areas you are struggling with we can give ideas what may help?

I'm in the same boat. My oldest is autistic and my youngest was just being assessed before coronavirus so now we are in limbo. I know myself she is but need the speech therepy etc in place for her but without the official diagnosis we are on hold

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 17/06/2020 19:16

Have you been told by a service provider that you can only access them if you have a diagnosis?

CherryHereCherryThere · 17/06/2020 19:17

Hi, can I ask what help it is you need that you think you can only get with a diagnosis? I don't mean that to sound unhelpful, just perhaps there are organisations that me or other posters can signpost you to.

augustyellow · 17/06/2020 19:18

London so Anywhere in London I can get to
My health visitor referred us and they said no she was really concerned.
Speech therapy referred twice nobody would assess ?

I already have 2 children with ASD
Ds displays more issues than they did (hes 3) he also alongside has no attention span
Constant meltdowns
I need to get him some help because I can’t apply the same strategies as we have for other asd dc as they are different and i don’t want to do anything wrong

@augustyellow

Yes because I need the diagnosis to get the help
But your child may not have ASD.

You’ll only know that after the assessment. So what you need is an assessment.

ArriettyJones · 17/06/2020 19:19

The NAS website have a search tool for finding service providers of different sorts, including assessment and diagnosis.

ToothFairyNemesis · 17/06/2020 19:20

@augustyellow the link is Harley Street.

augustyellow · 17/06/2020 19:20

He has the strictest routine ever we cannot deviate and if anything changes it we have meltdowns that last the whole day
Today he was woken unexpectedly by a noise he didn’t like and screamed all day

There is a private ASD clinic in NW Surrey - is that too far for you, OP?

augustyellow · 17/06/2020 19:21

I know he does.
The hv even said she can see. The speech therapy a was v concerned but they have to refer to a central place and they keep refusing to see him

OP posts:
SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 17/06/2020 19:21

If his issues are that severe, who on earth said no to a referral?

ThickFast · 17/06/2020 19:22

That must be exhausting OP.

augustyellow · 17/06/2020 19:22

I just want to help him he’s miserable, with my other 2 we didn’t have the additional issues but at least they were in the system we can’t get any help this time

Tonz · 17/06/2020 19:23

Yes I need her diagnosis before proper speech therepy will be given. There is a lot of help given to autistic children in my area but only when officially diagnosed. Been through it all with my oldest who was diagnosed at 3. Its just unfortunate my youngest assessment was planned during this pandemic but luckily I know a lot I can do to help her myself as I've been here already. Op may not have any experience with ASD and it can be overwhelming

augustyellow · 17/06/2020 19:24

It’s a central referral centre I was told by hv after she came to see us twice at home she was so concerned that She would refer and we would see a community paediatrician but then referral was rejected
So she referred to speech therapy who referred him to same place again rejected then she called them asked again and they copied us In to their reply telling her no that we had to wait for ANOTHER face to face and then to refer again which could be in months as currently no face to face appts

OP posts:
augustyellow · 17/06/2020 19:25

They did not give any actual reason Only they will not accept the referral or assess ‘at this time’
My feeling is that the longer we leave this the worse he gets it’s not fair

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 17/06/2020 19:25

Ah if you've got other dc with ASD then you obviously know how hard it is to get help - I was worried you were expecting lots of help to materialise with a diagnosis.

Tonz · 17/06/2020 19:26

Sorry op just saw you have another two. It's horrible not getting what your child needs isn't it.

VinoOlive · 17/06/2020 19:34

We saw a private developmental pead in Oxford if you'd be willing to travel there?

Sirzy · 17/06/2020 19:37

I think at the moment you would struggle to get seen anywhere to be honest most things have been moved to video consultations or postponed
