I knew my hoover was crap... I've practically made a second cat!

Just took a pumice stone over my bedroom carpet to get all the cat hair up and I'm amazed and disgusted by the amount! It was hoovered about a week ago, for context.

Time for a new hoover I think!

(there should be photos)

ha I think so! I got a new Shark recently and first time using it, each room filled it up at least once over 😬 my old one was useless!

Fallsballs · 15/06/2020 23:03

You could make a nice wig for the cat out of that.

SillyMoomin · 15/06/2020 23:07

Ooooh tell more about the pumice stone though- you simply just rub it over the carpet? Does it not wear holes in it?

Yeah, I just did it in circles. It's a flat one and pulls the hair up. I also used the edge gently to fluff up the pile. It's not something I'd do often but it's effective.

Cat doesn't even have the decency to look guilty! 😂😂😂

Which shark do you have? I have a crappy cheap hoover from Asda that's obviously crap.

What's the new cat called?
And what's the bigger one called? Grin

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 15/06/2020 23:16

My mother made me go over the carpets with a 'not quite wet - you know when it's right' cloth. Luckily she didn't know about pumice stones.
Took ages but the result felt rewarding somehow.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 15/06/2020 23:25

A damp pair of marigolds bring up all sorts too.
I love the idea of making a wig for the cat from it's own hair. Grin

QuestionableMouse · 16/06/2020 00:17

Bigger cat is called Bella... Haven't quite come up with a name for the new one 😂😂😂

I have a dog. And a spiky dog brush with needle like teeth (that looks brutal but he seems to like being brushed with.

I have now discovered that if I groom my living room rug with the wire dog brush it produces enough hair to knit a double bedspread.

I would love 💘a Miele pet Hoover but can't afford one.

pinkrocker · 16/06/2020 00:44

Something like this is the best thing ever, car valeter uses it and bought me one to rid my carpets of long hair that the hoover can't deal with.
There's different versions, but here's one www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07DL4PTV3/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_TCa6EbNBY036Y?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Gingaaarghpussy · 16/06/2020 00:45

I use a rubber broom to defluff my carpets. It's better than being on my hands and knees.
I unfortunately dont Hoover as often as I should due to mental health reasons. I also have a miele vacuum cleaner that is awesome.

SkiingIsHeaven · 16/06/2020 00:54

Have you got another cat? The hair is not the same colour.

QuestionableMouse · 16/06/2020 00:58

It's black in real life. I think the flash made it look much lighter.

I had one of those rubber things before my dog decided it was a toy and chewed it. Need another one I think 😂😂😂

I got a lillibrush for my dog hair in the car. I do the stairs with it too it’s really fab.

I would love 💘a Miele pet Hoover but can't afford one.

I have the Miele cat&dog. I hate the fucker. I’ve persevered with it for 2 years because it cost so fucking much but I give up now. I’m selling it. Tbh I’d pay someone to take it Grin

  1. the cord doesn’t unreel as you move. (It’s supposed to- it’s just not loose enough) Instead it just jolts and pulls the plug out of the socket so you have to go back and plug in. This isn’t just my sockets- I’ve used it in other houses as I’m a cleaner and same problem. So you end up unreeling the whole cord when you start meaning you have a flipping spaghetti junction tripping you up and having to constantly move out of the way to hoover. Also the hoover won’t roll over the cord so it keeps getting stuck and you have to lift it and move the cord. Which leads me to point 2

  2. it’s a heavy bastard. Really heavy. Nightmare going up and down stairs and doesn’t balance on the stairs so you can hoover them.

  3. the wheels get clogged up with pet hair and you have to get the tweezers out to get it al out.

  4. the little “hooks” (cant think of the word) on the hoover heads that you hook into the base to hold it upright when not in use are really flimsy plastic and have snapped on both my heads so it doesn’t store tidily anymore. Unless you wedge it between something.

  5. the cord doesn’t reel back in fully if there is the tiniest curl in it. You have to pull it back out and push the button again.

  6. the normal head is “scrapey” on hardfloors and that’s with the bristles down. I’ve taken to using the narrow head with the rubber lip to avoid scraping the floors. It’s also useless on carpets.

  7. the pet “turbo” head is great on carpets. (In the highest suction setting) But you can’t remove the rotary bristle bar to remove the hair that gets wound round it. So you have to spend ages snipping at it with tiny nail scissors and you can never get it all. The rotary brush stops working if it gets hair wound up in it so you have to keep checking it and snipping. This hoover takes a lot of maintenance.

  8. it’s really cumbersome. Probably a combination of its weight and tiny wheels but it does not move easily. And can’t cope with corners at all. It feels like you’re lugging a bag of spuds behind you when you’re hoovering. I love cleaning but this hoover makes me dread it.

  9. when removing the dirt collection chamber you have to pull hard and the bits that hold it in place feel flimsy. I’m always afraid they’re going to snap.

I have a Henry cordless now and love him for downstairs (hardfloors) but he isnt great for carpets with pet hair. Would love to try a shark too when funds permit.

QuestionableMouse · 16/06/2020 10:38

I'm going to borrow my sister's shark and do all the carpets. Gives me a try to see if I like it before buying one 😂

CoveredInBeeeees · 16/06/2020 10:55

Snap for the Shark, hugefan! One of our carpets was only a few months old. The place is and was hoovered at least 2-3 times a week. The amount the Shark picked up on the first go was unreal. I half joked there must be a built-in canister of dust that releases on first go to make you think the Shark is even more amazing. My house is clean, I swear, but my God. Unreal.

SabrinaThwaite · 16/06/2020 12:06

Pretty sure the Miele cord doesn’t automatically unwind as you go - the manual says to pull the cord out before you start?

Plus if you’re using a corded vacuum for any length of time you should fully unwind the cord to prevent overheating.

Stuffofawesome · 16/06/2020 12:12

This is the only acceptable use for that fuzz

I often google those felted cat hats when I need cheering up 😂

superstar63 · 16/06/2020 12:44

My carpet which was lovely brand new is now very flattened in walked on areas and is only two years old.

Would a rubber broom pull up the pile or any other ideas?

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 16/06/2020 12:50

I bought a pair of washing up gloves from shein that have scrubby rubber nodule bits on them, I bet they would be good for rubbing over the carpet.i use them in the shower to scrub the glass doors and they work a treat.

SoupDragon · 16/06/2020 12:58

Crocs are good for this kind of thing. It's horrifying!

Tlollj · 16/06/2020 13:04

I often wish I had a cat. No seeing this I’m glad I haven’t. Yuk

SoupDragon · 16/06/2020 13:11

We can make you one... probably more than one.
