Lake District holiday mid-July - would you go?

Snowflakedoggy · 15/06/2020 20:06

We have a lodge with a hot tub booked near Penrith for a week mid-July, for me, dh and dd (6). We are able to cancel it for free anytime up until next week when the full balance has to be paid. As far as we are aware it's still going ahead with the company we have booked through.

We are really torn about going. We usually like to go on walks, visit nice towns with little shops, cafes, pub lunches, crazy golf, ice creams and boat rides for dd, maybe some kayaking. I have no idea if anything will really be open/welcoming tourists. And also worried about the impact on tourists to rural areas with regards to virus spreading/hospitals etc. It's not a huge drive for us (approx 2 hours) but far enough.

We haven't had a holiday for a couple of years and dd has been looking forward to it so much, but I'm unsure about paying out £800 for a week of dd just being bored as we can't do anything (I know there's plenty to do outside but we like a variety!).

Would you go?

Probably not. It’s a lot of money to pay to sit in a hot tub if nothing is really open.

northernlittledonkey · 15/06/2020 20:47

God yes, I’d be there like a slut.

northernlittledonkey · 15/06/2020 20:48

Oh no, typo on phone. I meant like a shot...

Epic typo, northern. Grin

MrsRogerLima · 15/06/2020 20:52

@northernlittledonkey sure you did 😆

I would 100% go if I were able op. I fully intend to be on holiday in Scotland in August as long as I can do so lawfully.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 15/06/2020 20:52

Hahaha! Oops! Typo! I was just thinking you won't get away with that sort of talk on Mumsnet!! Haha!

TheLastSaola · 15/06/2020 20:53

Why wouldn't you.

Keswick Pencil Museum might not be open, but I'd probably we willing to accept that loss

Ukholidaysaregreat · 15/06/2020 20:55

Can you try to find out what is open in the area. You could have a lovely time with the hot tub and countryside walks. Penrith is lovely.

vanillandhoney · 15/06/2020 20:55

Yes.

Everything in Cumbria is opening up again now.

WarmSausageTea · 15/06/2020 20:56

I’d go for a lazy break if it was just myself and DP, but with a six year-old, probably not. If you’ve got a garden at home and access to open spaces, I’d be inclined to cancel and have an indulgent week at home instead.

parentofteen · 15/06/2020 20:57

We've just booked something similar today. Can't wait! Even if we have to stay in the lodge all week, the hot tub will be nice and we could all do with a change of scenery and a break from work and homeschool.

VictoriaBun · 15/06/2020 20:58

I live 20 miles from Penrith. Ulswater is your nearest lake to those things with regard to boat rides/ kayaks ext . As of yesterday everything is still shut. Even Aira Force ( walks / waterfall, National Trust ) is restricted by having to pre book for a timed arrival.
Hopefully by then more facilities will be open but as everywhere, be prepared to queue .
If your daughter is a good walker , lots of walks to do, which of course is free and no restrictions.

Hollyhead · 15/06/2020 20:58

I’d have thought by then enough will be open to make it different enough to be a holiday. Do you think it’s likely you’d spread the virus there? Are you in contact with many other people?

VictoriaBun · 15/06/2020 21:00

Vanillaandhoney
Enlighten me - what holiday activities are currently open ?

lakeswimmer · 15/06/2020 21:00

I live in the Lake District - it's been very busy near us recently with the good weather. It depends how important it is for you to go to tourist attractions (which might not be open) or whether you'd be happy with walks and taking a canoe/rubber dinghy out on a lake.

There are a few places open at the moment doing take aways/selling ice creams and there will probably more by July. DH works in a tourism related business and they are hoping to be open by 4th July.

starrynight19 · 15/06/2020 21:03

I would imagine there will be many more things to enjoy after the 4th of July.
We are hoping to do something similar at the beginning of August and just looking forward to a break from work and a change of scenery.

Well, all the ice-cream parlours here are open for takeaway. Cafes and pubs are doing takeaway too - both food and drink. Or you could go to a nice local shop or deli and get a picnic made up. You can walk pretty much wherever you want, or go for a swim in the sea or in the lakes.

Hotels and holiday lets are due to open on the 4th, along with outdoor seating in pubs, cafes and restaurants.

All the local shops re-opened today or are due to re-open in the next week or so. Yes, there'll be social distancing, but they're still open and they need the business.

Boat hire is also due to open up soon if people want to do that - of course it's only one family/boat at the moment.

The Safari Zoo opens on Wednesday, although you have to pre-book a time slot for arrivals.

There's plenty to do. A lot of indoor attractions might be closed, but you don't come to Cumbria to be stuck indoors!

C33P0 · 15/06/2020 22:13

Are people actually allowed to go away from home for overnight stays now then? I thought we weren't, confused...

Ellmau · 15/06/2020 22:25

From 4 July.

boatyardblues · 15/06/2020 22:30

Will your hot tub be in use? I seem to recall swimming pools were identified as a source of infection, so lovely warm hot tub water is probably worse & not as easy to clean down between visitors as hard surfaces etc. I’d check before paying the balance if it’s a big draw for you.

Doryhunky · 15/06/2020 22:43

I am edging towards no. I don’t fancy a holiday where there are queues or getting food is a faff or I have to worry about social distancing. If I was kid free yes. But keeping kids entertained, no.

Snowflakedoggy · 16/06/2020 10:15

Thanks everyone! There like a slut made me laugh Grin

I agree if it was just me and DH I'd definitely go, but unsure about having to queue and stuff with dd and worrying about going to the supermarket for supplies etc if there's going to be even more queues for that. We can only cancel up to next week so don't know if it's worth waiting it out just in case everything is 'ok'.

It's really helpful to hear everyone's opinions thank you Smile

I don't think I would ,we are due to go to Scotland for a,week in August ,Haven ,whilst the site might be open ,I think a lot of the facilities willpostponining or restricted ,so we are postponing ,I guess it really depends on what you want out of a holiday .

covidco · 16/06/2020 13:51

Depends what you want to do and what the R is like at the time to be honest.

Barrow and Lancaster hospitals are small and get full very quickly (they had to send COVID patients to Manchester, Salford and Liverpool well before the peak).

But that aside, very little will be open, it won't be the nice pottering holiday you hope for, unless all you want to do is sit in the hot tub...in which case, hell, go for it!

LaureBerthaud · 16/06/2020 14:03

very little will be open

How do you know that?
