I'm inviting my sister and her daughter (15) over for Afternoon Tea and am looking for ideas.

What would you provide?

Oh, I love afternoon tea Smile Someone has mentioned cheese scones, which has made me miss my John Lewis browsing sessions with coffee and a scone in the cafe 😭

NameChange84 · 14/06/2020 12:17

Most people have already covered the basics.

The most memorable and delicious afternoon tea I ever had had a fresh cream fruit trifle as an accompanying item. Divine.

Destroyedpeople · 14/06/2020 12:19

There should definitely be sugar cubes and tongs and different jams in little pots ....

GinWithRosie · 14/06/2020 12:19

I love a good Afternoon Tea (in fact if a miracle occurs and I ever get married again, this is exactly what I would have...but as I said, there'd need to be some miracle 😂)

Finger sandwiches:

Roast beef and horseradish
Smoked salmon and cream cheese
Hand cut ham with a lovely fruity chutney
Brie and cranberry
Egg mayo with cress (plenty of salt and pepper)
Roasted veg and hummus

Posh crisps - plenty of 😉

Scones with jam and cream
Selection of cakes - I love a lemon drizzle and a coffee and walnut but to be honest, cake in any delicious form would be top notch 😂👍

Strawberries and thick double cream

Posh lemonade or ginger beer in a big jug with sprigs of mint and lots of ice.

Tea...in a big old pot with lovely china.

God I want this now 😂

mummmy2017 · 14/06/2020 12:19

I like warm quiche, I use the premade has, add everything in uncooked and bake for 30 mins.
Nothing beats Bacon and onion straight out of the oven.

SuperMedium · 14/06/2020 12:20

Presuming that you specifically said / meant "afternoon tea" not just tea in the afternoon, you absolutely have to include scones with jam and clotted cream.

AdaColeman · 14/06/2020 12:21

A choice of two or three different teas, not just a brand leader.

Sandwiches with interesting fillings, with a choice of breads. Smoked salmon and cucumber, Coronation chicken, Parma ham with cream cheese are some ideas.

Home made scones with butter, jam & clotted cream.

Selection of cakes, chocolate, fruit, coffee & walnut etc etc

Possibly some savoury items, cheese straws, mini sausage rolls, or perhaps individual trifles.

Strawberries and cream.

Some glasses of fizz, Prosecco or champagne.

lucyintheskywithcz · 14/06/2020 12:21

Finger sandwiches, scones and then individual cakes and maybe a Victoria sponge. Yummy

caffeinebuzz · 14/06/2020 12:22

Finger sandwiches, probably roast beef, smoked salmon, ham & egg
Scones with ham & clotted cream
Little cakes / macaroons
Some nice loose leaf tea, and ideally a glass of something bubbly!

Edwardette · 14/06/2020 12:22

I would expect cake and tea. My favourites are prawn mayo, cheese and cucumber, coronation chicken, salmon and cream cheese all on white crustless bread and a victoria spong, almond or marzipan tarte, biscuits..maybe brownies too.

CatBatCat · 14/06/2020 12:23

Scones or a teacake with jam and cream. Pot of tea - Earl Grey please.

Baconking · 14/06/2020 12:26

@NameChange84 ooh yes! Good idea. Mini trifles!

loubieloo4 · 14/06/2020 12:29

@ImFreeToDoWhatIWant yours sounds lovely and just what I need.

I have never been to afternoon tea but would like to see

Nice coffee (I don't like tea!)
Selection of small sandwiches beef, ham ....
Tiny cakes, chocolate, Victoria sponge...
Maybe a bottle of fizz and homemade lemonade

Not bothered by scones, sausage rolls etc.

In fact I might have afternoon tea for my birthday next month if the weather is nice 😊

Purplewithred · 14/06/2020 12:29

Scones with clotted cream and jam and champagne/prosecco.

Everything else is just window dressing.

For proper afternoon tea that serves as the evening meal, then

  • bread and butter, sliced ham and hot potatoes (sometimes corned beef), maybe a chunk of cheese, potato pie or potato pastie, honey, clotted cream, junket if you're lucky, maybe a fruit crumble and custard. Cake - seed cake, Victoria sponge, fruit cake, whatever was on the go. Scones and jam and clotted cream were more for company but you sometimes got them.

Potato pie or pasty was made with plenty of pepper and onions and a knob of clotted cream on top. Shortcrust pastry of course. I am now salivating.... Oh milk, occasionally home made lemonade for the kits, tea in a big tin teapot for everyone else.

Pinkyyy · 14/06/2020 12:30

Bloody hell some of you sound as though you have afternoon tea with the queen!!

TheGinGenie · 14/06/2020 12:31

Sandwiches, cakes, tea, maybe scones

Naruralflavours100 · 14/06/2020 12:34

Oh I LOVE an afternoon tea Grin
Loads of tea refills are a must!

One of the best I had was served with a little mini cup of the most gorgeous mushroom soup along with the sandwiches.

Bettysprocker · 14/06/2020 12:34

Mine on VE Day. You can't go wrong with sandwiches and cake.

If I invite you round for afternoon tea, what will you expect to eat?
RiftGibbon · 14/06/2020 12:35

Sandwiches, cake and tea.
If you can find a dairy-free clotted cream alternative that tastes of clotted cream and not coconut then I'll have scones and jam (and 'cream') too!

UntamedWisteria · 14/06/2020 12:40

Gosh you are all very Hyacinth Bucket.

If i invite people round for tea, I provide:

Tea (choice of Earl Grey or Builders')
A home-made cake

Anything more would be perceived as a bit try-hard. I might add some bought cocktail sausage rolls as well.

KoalasandRabbit · 14/06/2020 12:41

Would check what they eat / don't eat / dietary requirements first.

Otherwise sandwiches maybe egg and cress, smoked salmon, ham and / or cheese, cucumber if people will eat that if not another they will.

Then scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream and cakes, maybe lemon drizzle, chocolate cake, victoria sponge cake.

If you want alcohol maybe pimms and lemonade with fruit or prosecco. Otherwise tea. Homemade lemonade would work well too.

UntamedWisteria · 14/06/2020 12:42

I would only expect the finger sandwiches, scones, little cakes combo if I was paying for tea in a posh hotel. And then I would make sure I hadn't had lunch first & wasn't having a big dinner.

user1495884620 · 14/06/2020 12:42

WTF is a finger sandwich? Sounds gruesome!

Livpool · 14/06/2020 12:45

Little sandwiches and tea then bubbly and cake

biddybird · 14/06/2020 12:48

If it were me I would stick with scones, clotted cream, jam and tea.
Those full afternoon teas are nice in theory but I always end up feeling sick!
