Applying for a job waaay above my pay grade?

Hi

I've seen a job advertised, went through the person spec & job description, yep can do all of that easily, got all of the experience and qualifications.

But then I saw the pay - it's 3 x what I earn at the moment, into 6 figures which is a huge salary around here.

So my immediate thought is no, I couldn't do that. Had I not seen the salary I'd have applied straight away.

Talk me into it! Because all I can think of is no, for that salary they want more than me Blush

A man wouldn’t question the application and would apply having half the qualifications/person spec

Ask - why not you?

CMMum88 · 13/06/2020 20:21

Do it! You have what they want! And don't tell them your current salary when applying or negotiating.

dandydo · 13/06/2020 20:21

Get applying for it. They can only say no. If you don't you will always wonder

As I say to anyone the worst thing that can happen is that you get the job.

Sandybval · 13/06/2020 20:22

You don't know unless you go for it, do it Smile I doubled my salary in my last new job, I thought I had no chance but thought the experience would be good.

RogueV · 13/06/2020 20:22

Do it!!!!

FauxFox · 13/06/2020 20:23

Just do it. You have nothing to lose! Good luck!

Cupcakecafe · 13/06/2020 20:23

Do it!
The only reason a salary should make you rule it out would be if it's too low to live on (for your outgoings, obviously different for everyone).
If you have the qualifications it's definitely worth a try.

SunnySomer · 13/06/2020 20:24

I’d apply. But while you’re waiting to hear back maybe do some research into the company to find out quite why they need to offer such as unusual amount? (And at the same time benchmark your salary and see if you’re being underpaid now)

treebeeschattering · 13/06/2020 20:24

It's actually 4 x my current salary because I'm part time.

This is full time but that would be ok.

But I'll spend hours filling in the form and they'll just look at my current salary and go no chance, won't they?

OP posts:
MrsSchadenfreude · 13/06/2020 20:24

Do it.

treebeeschattering · 13/06/2020 20:28

Sunny I think the difference is that I'm only doing one element of the job at the moment, and for a charity. I've done all of the required elements in a previous job.

OP posts:
MeAgain2020 · 13/06/2020 20:31

Apply for it anyway. What's the worst that can happen?!
It's a confidence thing. Believe you can and you will one day!!
Good luck!!

BendyBusBuggy · 13/06/2020 20:36

Maybe one way of thinking about it is that they've got to give the job to somebody, and all the other people are only humans too?
Good luck!

NooneElseIsSingingMySong · 13/06/2020 20:36

I did it once....I went for a job two levels about my current job but I met the person spec. I didn’t even expect to get an interview but I got the job. I was so shocked when they rang to offer me the job I said REALLY?! Grin fortunately I knew the person interviewing that called! I really enjoyed the job too.
So my advice is go for it!

DamnYankee · 13/06/2020 20:54

I think you should go for it.
You're being paid to perform one element of the job already.
Explain how you fulfilled the other elements elsewhere and were paid accordingly.
Must you include your salary information? They've already stated what they are willing to pay...
Best of luck! This could be a great opportunity!

WingingWonder · 13/06/2020 21:04

Just list current salary as ‘competitive’ or ‘undisclosed’

Solasum · 13/06/2020 21:05

As PP have said, a man wouldn’t think twice. Do it. And if you are offered the job and they try and beat you down on salary, stand firm

8elate8 · 13/06/2020 21:06

My DP more than doubled his salary when applying for a job. At no time did he think he was getting paid to much, dont think I've ever heard a man say that Grin Go got it!

mynamesmrdiggety · 13/06/2020 21:06

They won't ask your current salary will they? I'd apply but be prepared that you might have missed something as it seems really odd that a six figure job could be the same level as a 3O/40k job unless you're being dramatically underpaid. No harm in throwing your hat in though.

yearinyearout · 13/06/2020 21:10

You don't need to declare your current salary.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 13/06/2020 21:14

Do it! And go on a spending spree with your first wage.

ThatLockdownLyfe · 13/06/2020 21:15

Do not declare your current salary whatever you do.

Go for it. Good luck!

Thelnebriati · 13/06/2020 21:16

Do it. Pretend its a dry run.

ScrapThatThen · 13/06/2020 21:18

Think what you have above the other candidates and trample them down on the way to get the job. Do a thorough application and then start researching for the interview. Don't do any apologising or minimising. Be confident and work out whether they are right for you.
