I have some random questions for you.....

I have started then stopped writing posts asking these things today as on their own they are piddly little questions - but I actually want to know the answers, so I’m hoping by putting them together in a mega post it will justify my nosiness!

Q1) what meal can you cook to restaurant standard? Or would be proud to serve to guests?! I want to learn to cook fancier food as we are eating in all the time now, but I need inspiration!

Q2) do you have a hobby? Apparently having an interest will lower my - off the chart - cortisol levels, but I just spend hours reading bloody mumsnet and no one ever mentions their hobby incase it outs them!

Q3) Can you show me if you have some nice slippers please? I need some new ones.

Thank you for indulging me - feel free to add any random questions of your own that don’t quite justify their own post but that you want to know the answer to :)

I can't cook anything to restaurant standard but once fluked an amazing Bakewell tart.

Hobbies; tarot/astrology, gardening and writing job applications! I get loads of interview offers but hardly ever go...

Slippers- from Toast. They are wool but not sweaty at all.

CarrieMoonbeams · 13/06/2020 20:45

Hi OP, like some PP have said, I don't necessarily think I cook anything to a restaurant standard, but I'm a decent enough cook and will happily feed other people. I make a good lasagne (beef for DH, veggie mince for me), and in the days when my DMum was 'mobile' she used to be make a point of finding out when I was cooking Macaroni cheese so that she could just happen to drop by at dinner time! As the weather was so hot here recently, I started looking at recipes for salads we hadn't made before. Not cooking as such, I know (before anyone else says it!), but I enjoyed

  1. I cook a lot. To me restaurants are about eating things I can’t cook so I would say no, but it very much depends on the std of restaurant. Sauces and stocks are the key. If we’re talking, say, pub restaurant I would say I can match it. My duck breast does a good impression of being refined. My Victoria sponge and scones and roast dinners are better than generally I find out.
  1. Cooking! I instagram my food. Also holidays (does that count?), comedy & theatre, growing veg (so I can cook with super fresh veg).
  1. Hate slippers —smelly feet—.
BeBraveAndBeKind · 13/06/2020 20:51
  1. My best meal is slow roasted rosemary and garlic lamb and red wine gravy. Perfect every time.

  2. Knitting, crochet, cross-stitch and sewing. I'd recommend The Happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller to anyone wanting to learn crochet. It's American terminology which is slightly different from UK terms but she explains in a really clear, easy to follow way.

  3. I'm after some new slippers too so on the look out as well. Mine are ancient.

CarrieMoonbeams · 13/06/2020 20:51

... oops! I enjoyed Tabbouleh, Fattoush, and am currently trying to make Labneh.

Hobbies, I'm not very artistic, but I recently started Needle Felting, using kits that I bought online. It's basically just stabbing wool with a very scary needle, but really enjoyable.

Slippers, DH bought me a pair of furry slipper boots from the White Company as part of my birthday present last year (I did ask for them!). They're great, really cosy and with hard soles so I can nip outside in them.

happypotamus · 13/06/2020 21:18

I can't cook anything to restaurant standard. We probably have people round to eat once a year. If we don't get a takeaway, I do salmon marinaded in herbs, garlic and lemon and baked. I did this when my in-laws came for dinner and once when DH's friends came, and it went down well. It's easy enough that I can't mess it up. DH has something else as he is vegan.
I don't have hobbies, except reading. I don't have time for hobbies.
I have several pairs of slippers, but they are all old now. The best ones I had to throw away at the end of winter. I think they were from Next but not sure as they were a gift. They were grey with lovely white fluffy stuff inside.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 13/06/2020 21:45
  1. I can cook sth edible, but that's it

  2. I love to learn languages and I like to read. I would love to play an instument, like my siblings, but it's too late now.

  3. Barefoot or socks.

priya38 · 13/06/2020 21:59

I have a fair few authentic curry recipes thats been passed down to me over the years, so I can cook a good few curry/rice dishes.

My hobbies are astrology and art and I also read divination cards which I've studied for a few years. I've learnt a lot about myself with regards to astrology and I can also divine with astrology.

I don't wear slippers I wear socks.

priya38 · 13/06/2020 22:04

@HRH2020

Snap! I'm into tarot and astrology too. But I do also read playing cards and lenormand.

Deadringer · 13/06/2020 23:29

Pretty sure I don't cook anything to restaurant standard but i do a lovely beef stroganoff. No hobbies as such but I like reading and doing little bits of writing. I don't wear slippers i don't like them, i used to go barefoot in the house but had to stop due to a heel spur, now i wear crocs.

LynetteScavo · 14/06/2020 07:53

I can cook most things to restaurant (well a decent gastro pub) standard

I've taken up growing vegetables over lockdown. Before I didn't have time or money for a hobby (who knew gardening could be so expensive!)

I have Birkenstock slippers. We went though a phase of wearing slippers at work last winter
So I invested. Now everybody is wearing trainers.

Herecomethehotstepper · 14/06/2020 08:18

Lovely thread!

I make the best salads in the world. I could literally live on salad and freshly baked bread and have even started growing my own salad to feed my obsession. I love combining all sorts of fruits, cooked meats, pickled vegetables, legumes, olives, nuts, etc. Not all at the same time though!

My hobbies are macrame, crochet, yoga, running, gardening and DIY.

If I posted a picture of my slippers someone would probably start a go fund me. They are just a frame now and most of my foot comes into contact with the floor. Don't buy slippers from Primark!

copycopypaste · 14/06/2020 08:21

I don't cook anything to restaurant standard, but what I do cook is always good. It's not very often I make something that's meh.

I ride motorbikes and love it, I've made loads of ace friends and we still meet up for long weekends away riding, eating and sometimes we travel to Europe to watch bike racing. I also have dogs and I love to walk. During lockdown I've starting to live my garden. Planted loads of pits with flowers this year, a hanging basket and turned a bit of rubbishy dirt into a wild flower but if dirt.

I don't 'do' slippers due to the dogs Grin

ShipshapeShore · 17/06/2020 20:32

Bit of a hijack, sorry Grin. I treated myself to some ugg alanna slippers after you all recommended uggs and I'm really in two minds about whether to send them back! They're so lovely but very snug and I was wondering how much they will give. They're quite tight on the width, length too actually, but they are incredibly fluffy inside so there doesn't seem much room for actual foot, and I don't have a particularly slim foot either! Any advice?

Had to Google those ones, they do look pretty sturdy but they should give in a week or so. I've got super wide feet and had to get my husband to help me pull on my boots at first Blush they felt super tight width wise and a bit snug on the toes, but they gave in quite quickly and fit perfectly now. I ended up sizing up for my slippers (can't remember what type but thick chunky sole scuffette style) so I could wear thick cosy socks with them.
Dominoz · 17/06/2020 20:58

Get Emu Australia Mayberry slippers they're so nice! I have them in grey and cream. There's normally a code for 20% off somewhere too.

Dominoz · 17/06/2020 21:00

I think the code was welcomeback not sure if it still works though.

spiceandallthingsnice · 18/03/2021 13:01

I just noticed that someone recommended my small business on here for making restaurant quality meals at home. Thank you so much :-) It is just me working from home making up my Sri Lankan style curry kits-I'm very much a micro enterprise so particularly appreciated when customers post positive comments. However the link posted was incorrect -the correct website is www.srispice.co.uk (not.com) so just wanted to come on and say thanks so much and add in the correct link.

Camomila · 18/03/2021 13:32
  1. Lasagne and Tiramisu - to the standard of an Italian restaurant in the UK, not in Italy!

  2. I like baking and going for walks.

  3. I have some pink slippers from Aldi.
