I have some random questions for you.....

I have started then stopped writing posts asking these things today as on their own they are piddly little questions - but I actually want to know the answers, so I’m hoping by putting them together in a mega post it will justify my nosiness!

Q1) what meal can you cook to restaurant standard? Or would be proud to serve to guests?! I want to learn to cook fancier food as we are eating in all the time now, but I need inspiration!

Q2) do you have a hobby? Apparently having an interest will lower my - off the chart - cortisol levels, but I just spend hours reading bloody mumsnet and no one ever mentions their hobby incase it outs them!

Q3) Can you show me if you have some nice slippers please? I need some new ones.

Thank you for indulging me - feel free to add any random questions of your own that don’t quite justify their own post but that you want to know the answer to :)

Love this!

  1. Not posh or restaurant food really but I love making halloumi & mushroom wraps from Nando's, so easy to recreate at home :)
  1. I love painting and drawing, i'm not brilliant at it but I find it quite relaxing. Recently bought some chalk markers (like paint pens) which are good for drawing on stones and pebbles too which is fun.
  1. I do like flip flop slippers, I find them more comfortable than a full slipper. Something like this... www.next.co.uk/style/st510168/108630#108630
I'd live in flip flops if I could :D
2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 13/06/2020 17:16

1- soup and cake (not served together!)
2- sewing, knitting, painting, and reading
3- sheepers www.sheepers.co.uk/

BlueJava · 13/06/2020 17:18

Q1) what meal can you cook to restaurant standard? Or would be proud to serve to guests?!
If we have guests we get take out, I like to keep my friends so I don't cook!

Q2) do you have a hobby?
Learning Russian (time consuming), reading, Futurelearn courses about tech, embroidery.

Q3) Can you show me if you have some nice slippers please?
I don't wear slippers, just have bare feet or nonslip socks if it's v cold.

nevergoingoutagain · 13/06/2020 17:24
  1. lasagne. Not authentic in any way but yummy! I make my own ragu and white sauce. Sadly it's not restaurant standard EVERYTIME but sometimes it's bloody awesome! I make a good lentil one too for my veggie daughter!

  2. running. Yoga. Girl guide leader. Girlguiding can be stressful so not that helpful for cortisol levels but yoga and running keep me sane!

  3. I always get slippers in Aldi as they're cheap and washable and can be replaced often as I don't wear socks so they get stinky! I'd love a pair of ugg ones.

Coffeecak3 · 13/06/2020 17:24

I can cook a good coq au vin or boeuf bourguignon . After 40 years I have found a bread recipe that works for me.

My main hobby is making sugar paste flowers or cup cakes.
I don’t wear slippers.

Ohffs66 · 13/06/2020 17:25

My 'restaurant" dishes I would say are risotto (usually prawn, pea, mint and basil), and this www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/pan-fried_salmon_with_85432/amp. I can also make creme brulee and a mean pizza from scratch.

No real hobbies as such but I have a rescue dog who is very anxious and not well socialised so in normal times I do various classes to try and help build her confidence. I enjoy doing jigsaws, I read quite a bit, I bake a lot and enjoy doing DIY and house related stuff. I'd like to be a better gardener!

My slippers are Helen Moore furry booties, I think I'm on my third pair...I never pay full price for them though as they are bloody extortionate, I think I got my last pair on eBay for a tenner.

Billyjoearmstrong · 13/06/2020 17:27

I’m an okay cook but nothing to a good standard.

I don’t have any hobbies.

I wear socks.

Flymetothetoon · 13/06/2020 17:27

Not sure about restaurant standard but I can do a lovely fish pie, lasagne, shepherds pie and Sunday roast.

I like to potter in the garden (having a new greenhouse erected as I type)
Also love history and hoover up in particular anything about the Tudor era.

Don't have slippers but in warm weather a pair of fitflops and cooler a pair of Bailey button uggs - both ridiculously comfy!

Noworrieshere · 13/06/2020 17:30

I've got furry crocs. They are brilliant.

I like knitting, crochet and embroidery. Counting stitches keeps me calm. Also pottering about on beaches for sea glass and nice shells. I have grand plans to make jewellery and art from the sea glass but so far I've just collected it up in a big jar.

I can't cook anything particularly well but we did buy some spice kits from www.srispice.com recently and produced a reasonably impressive curry so I'd recommend them

PopsicleHustler · 13/06/2020 17:36

I tend to stick to simple stuff when cooking. But my husband loves all different kinds of foods and I have began to broaden my cooking horizon, so to speak. I do steaks, stir fry, curries, Nigerian dishes like tomato stews with beef. Trusty fish and chips. Roast dinners. Nothing really fancy shmancy. Just stuff I can manage.

  1. My hubby is writing. I love writing novels. I have so many ideas and love reading too. I so love reading mumsnet also but sometimes the swearing puts me off certain posts. I I arts I crafts too but struggle to find the time unless doing it work my children. Problem is 2 year old dd gets all the crafty bits and starts chucking them everywhere so in the end we pack it away. We also love monopoly and playing battlelands royals as a family
It's a good game if you're into working as a team and shooting other teams from your phone and becoming number one player. Every round lasts 3 minutes and you can win things etc. Its free and good fun. You can download it on google play.
  1. Dont really wear slippers unless I am going to hospital, which I always wind up every couple of years having children. Currently expecting baby number 5. :)
PopsicleHustler · 13/06/2020 17:36

My hobby is writing, not my hubby lol.

katmarie · 13/06/2020 17:36

Restaurant cooking wise I can do a beef bourguignon better than my DH which is saying something. I use Julia childs recipe as the base, and it's amazing. I also do an amazing roast chicken apparently. My speciality at the moment though seems to be ragu.

Hobbies, I knit, cross stitch, read a phenomenal amount, I'm getting very into adult colouring books at the moment, and I'm also doing an open university degree so that keeps me occupied.

I have Mahabis slippers. The most comfortable and most expensive slippers I've ever owned. I'll never go back to cheaper ones now.

InFiveMins · 13/06/2020 17:39

Q1) Lasagne is my signature dish - served with a simple side salad and something nice to drink. Another option would be a type of fish or steak with potatoes and vegetables.

Q2) I enjoy cooking but that is about it. For inspiration, my OH enjoys running, drawing, painting, and cycling.

Q3) Definitely the UGG slippers that have been mentioned on here however I can only bear to wear them in the winter time.

FlamedToACrisp · 13/06/2020 17:39
  1. None - my cooking is awful, although I make yummy cakes.
  2. Creative writing, researching family history and criticising my stepson.
  3. I love these Coolers slippers - most snuggly and comfortable ever!
I have some random questions for you.....
Coffeecak3 · 13/06/2020 17:46

@Flymetothetoon all my favourite meals.

CatBatCat · 13/06/2020 17:59

Ex chef so I can cook most things to restaurant standard but I can't bake a cake.
My hobby is gardening and in the winter I wear Emu boots which just another alternative to uggs and birkenstocks in the summer.

mamaduckbone · 13/06/2020 18:31
  1. Risotto. It's the only thing I cook better than dh. I can make good cakes as well.
  2. reading, gardening and I'm in a drumming group which I really enjoy.
  3. my slippers are sheepskin from Aldi but far too old and revolting to take a picture of.
StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 13/06/2020 18:53
  1. I'm no cook really, I do make a bloody good roast pork though.
  1. I like cross stitch, I buy the kits that come with the tapestry hoop so they are easy to display when finished.
  1. Sounds like I need ugg slippers! Grin I love slippers but just buy cheap supermarket
1forAll74 · 13/06/2020 19:11

I don't wish to make what you term as fancy restaurant meals. I like cooking, but cook what I call good old fashioned country style meals. but make various spicy curries at times.

My hobbies are gardening, water colour painting (not brilliant, but always trying my best). Writing, as in attempting short stories, and sometimes altering oldish clothes.

I wear some colourful socks in the house, My house is old and draughty at times, and I look ridiculous at the moment, as I keep wearing some boot like slippers, like a colourful knitted Nordic style.
I live alone, so don't care what I look like really.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 13/06/2020 19:21

Thomasina Myer’s Autumn Stew with Pepian and Pork Pibil.
(Deep breath) crochet, embroidery, drawing, needle felting, drop spinning. Dh rolls his eyes audibly at my latest craze.
Emu boots. Confession got them from a chazzer (brand new) lovely.

Trenisenne · 13/06/2020 19:48
  1. Nothing. I used to be quite good at Indian food, but since having kids, I don't bother. And frankly, cooking doesn't even figure on my list of priorities.
  2. Hiking and swimming and reading and sewing (clothes by preference). I don't do enough of any of these. Out of necessity, I'm pushing myself thorough french lessons and exams at the moment, and it doesn't leave much space for anything else (it's interesting enough, learning French, but it's a long slog...).
  3. I have Celtic sheepskin ones (like the ugg ones basically). But we have underfloor heating and I don't really need them. I hanker after draughts and bad heating - how I grew up and I miss being cold!
WhatWouldDominicDo · 13/06/2020 20:03

Q1) what meal can you cook to restaurant standard?

Coq au vin

Q2) do you have a hobby?
Knitting

Sainsbury's - see attached

I have some random questions for you.....
Shannith · 13/06/2020 20:18

Most food to level of a fancy Gastro pub. I'm a good cook.

Riding, I have a horse. Doing crosswords, running, yoga, fostering cats and dogs. So outing I might as well post my name and address.

Got some nice skandi boot slippers from Amazon a couple of years ago. Still going strong.

Rushhomeroad · 13/06/2020 20:27

Not restaurant standard, but enjoy challenging myself by recreating family dishes without all the things my DC are allergic to (and DS has sensory issues too!).

Enjoy reading, cross stitch, writing and dog walking.

Usually bare feet at home, despite my in laws buying me slippers every birthday and Christmas!!

happyisthebestcrocodile · 13/06/2020 20:30

Hi OP,

  1. I started using Gousto in January (after much research into Hello Fresh, Riverford etc.) and was won over by their range of meals and value for money. It has improved my cooking beyond my expectations and I try to present it how they suggest. The recipes are easy to follow. I love Tuesday lunchtimes now as I get to see the new menu for the next order! It has been a game-changer as the previous routine had been to quickly choose a ready-meal from Sainsburys each night :(
  1. It’s running when I get the chance. I used to be quite good but these days it’s mostly ambling around the village, pushing 3-stone of toddler and buggy; stopping every 5 minutes to replenish snacks/fetch wellies that have been flung from the buggy/observe ducks.
  1. I don’t currently own slippers but we are moving next week to a house with much harder floors so will look into Uggs :)
