On Sunday I’m going to sit in silence for 4 hours

I have a 3 & 6 year old. I’m a SAHM. The schools shut here in Ireland March 12 so the girls have been home full time since then. My 6 year one doesn’t stop talking - ever.

On Sunday DH is taking the girls to visit his parents (allowed here) and I’m just going to sit in silence while they’re gone!

Today is the day!! Was awake a lot with DDog last night - he had to be sedated to get his paws x-rayed yesterday and he was grumbling and complaining a lot so had to get up to him a few times.

Hope he quitens down later - I’m not supposed to walk him today!

Have a good break, Drinkandknowthings.
I hope they are late back!

babasaclover · 14/06/2020 09:06

@Drinkandknowthings enjoy enjoy enjoy! And make it a regular thing, even without lockdown - everyone needs a few hours without their own kids every now and then - especially when they are talkers! Mine doesn't stop 😫

Enjoy. So envious. My house currently is a mix between a nightclub and amusement arcade

Im screaming with the thoughts they may only go to school one a week in Sept, just ridiculousAngry

This reminds me of when my older 2 we're little. I worked and was doing a degree. I used to get up early once a month and drive to the uni library which was in the middle of the countryside. I was always the only one there apart from the librarian, who volunteered to do the shift for the same reason. Total and utter peace and quiet. Sometimes I did some work.....

BakewellGin1 · 14/06/2020 10:02

Enjoy every single second...

My DH is at work... Oldest DS hasn't ventured downstairs yet and Baby DS was up 6am so nearly nap time. I've purposely put off having a bath and getting dressed so I can do it in peace Grin

Drinkandknowthings · 14/06/2020 11:13

They’re almost ready to go!! First I think I’ll shower, then have a cup of tea in bed. Then a nap!

Whilst I don’t have young D.C. anymore I do have a house full of a DH who often works away, returned uni students and a furloughed D.C. it seems to be endless coooking and washing up, not me doing it all but I am just not used to this level of throughput for so long. Then if you are in the main areas someone always wants to chat, or if you take yourself to a bedroom there are always questions, it is like when they were all little again.

Finally today they have all gone out (to different places) I am 2 hours into my free house time, so far I have showered, got, dressed, had a lazy coffee and toast in the garden. Next I am going to wash the floor as it will be dry before anyone comes home. Then I am going to sit with my feet up in the garden until everyone returns.

This is the first time since January I have had the house to myself, before that I often had days alone and can’t wait for a October when they hopefully all go again

Drinkandknowthings · 14/06/2020 13:24

Hmm - not quite silence, huge amounts of thunder happening. Luckily the dog is totally unfazed. I’ve put off the nap idea and I’m watching a cozy mystery - which I never get to do -in bed.

I worked as a childminder then a nanny for 40 years. The sound of silence is the best sound ever.

My none childcare friends think it's weird that when at home I very rarely have the TV or radio on.

I've spent most of lockdown on my own as DH is a Prison Officer so has worked long shifts throughout.

Its lovely. I can sit in the conservatory with the doors open, actually being able to hear the birds.

I do, now and then listen to an audible book, or a podcast. But once listened to its switched off. Same with the TV, I do watch specific programmes, but once watched its turned off.

The bliss of no background noise.

Drinkandknowthings · 14/06/2020 16:11

Well my day was lovely but not quite as relaxing as I’d hoped. We were having loads of thunder when all of a sudden I heard a loud crack and then a huge roll of thunder. After checking the house I realised that none of the power sockets were working even though all the lights were turning on. Had to crawl under the tv to turn off the sockets and move the fridge. Then balance on some books on a chair to reach the fuse box!

It’s all fine but I could have done without it today!

My DS is 10. He makes sound effects all the time. (Even when hes watching the tv or playing a computer game)
I know if he is unwell if there is no constant sound effects. He also repeats jokes or punch lines from tv that we all heard literally seconds earlier!! It will be v strange when he goes back to school the week after next. Dd is a teen - she could go days without speaking!!

ListeningQuietly · 14/06/2020 16:31

drinkand
So you are a superhero mum even when nobody is there to see it.

As Madness said
make a difference to the days

Tiktok
I have a photo on my FB of what happened when my children went quiet.
It involved paint.
NEVER trust silent children unless you can see them Wink

TwoTaggySits · 14/06/2020 16:40

I'm another one who sits up late just to get some quiet time! Knackered, but so worth it!

MayFayre · 14/06/2020 17:34

Me too. My evening doesn’t start until 10 or so when everyone else buggers off to bed.

Juiceey · 14/06/2020 17:40

How stressful OP! But glad you had your day :)
