If you've been furloughed, are you expecting to be made redundant?

I've been furloughed since April, even thought I was originally told it was just for cash flow purposes (company still fully operational but taking advantage of the free 2.5k) the longer it goes on the more I think they are getting used to coping without me and if they decide they need to make job cuts I will be the obvious choice to go. I think there's a fair chance I'll be made redundant but could be wrong. What about others who've been furloughed, are you confident of a return?

2 people have gone at my husbands previous job. There will be more but spread across the various offices.

Kernowgal · 11/06/2020 23:18

Yes, am expecting it. I work in a tourist attraction and if there are low numbers of paying visitors this summer (as opposed to those with annual passes) we’ll be screwed financially. My job isn’t essential to the business so I think it’ll be bye-bye by September.

Am applying for other things in the interim.

SingleHandSue · 11/06/2020 23:22

Yep I’m fully expecting it. I work in fashion retail and have been on furlough since 1st April.

The company have told us they are going to concentrate on online and catalogue sales to keep the company afloat and only keep a limited number of stores open dependant on discussions with landlords.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my store is one of the lucky ones but I’m not feeling hopeful. I won’t be entitled to redundancy either as I haven’t been there long enough.

KaronAVyrus · 11/06/2020 23:25

Yeah, probably. Work in tourism but think I’ll be let go in September.

PerspicaciaTick · 11/06/2020 23:34

No, I expect there will be some recruitment required where I work to catch up on a massive backlog over the next 12 months.

ittooshallpass · 11/06/2020 23:36

The company I work at didn't even bother with furloughing staff. Just went straight to redundancies. It's been awful. Trying to find a new job now is a nightmare. I hope you all keep your jobs.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 12/06/2020 01:02

I'm agency, furloughed to encourage me to stay. I'm waiting for a specific retailer to fully reopen, along with a rise in container volumes. Then it'll be back to 55 hour weeks.

pinkazing · 12/06/2020 02:56

I’m not confident of returning at all. I think the company will be fine, just less focus on the area I work in,

Dreamondreamer · 12/06/2020 03:02

I'm not expecting it before we go back, I think we'll make it to opening again, but if I still have a job this time next year is a different question.
As far as I can make out, the pause button has been pressed, on everything including outgoings, and so I think we'll make in through this bit. It's what happens when we reopen and dealing with the loss in trade, the measures we'll have to put in place and the traditionally quiet winter months that are generally shored up by busy summer months that worry me now.

Aclh13 · 12/06/2020 04:53

I didn't even get a chance, I study biological science at university, took the year out to gain work experience, got laid of literally because I have a heart condition and they didn't want to furlough me when I'm not going to be permanent, I also got a vulnerable letter. I have been off ever since and signed onto disbaility because I can't do any available roles in my area (care and support) due to medical conditions. I have now just secured employment in an equine laboratory for the summer and will be returning to my studies in the October at hopefully a better university given the vacancies.

Blankiefan · 12/06/2020 07:37

50/50. I've been off for 9 weeks now. The business is looking at what the medium term looks like then will decide. I work in a non-core area so who knows? I'm largely trying to ignore it for now as I can't influence it so may as well "enjoy" furlough before starting to worry about the next stage. I am updating my LinkedIn profile tho.

Mintjulia · 12/06/2020 07:49

Yes. I did a lot of events management which won’t be back until next year so I’m already working on a company of my own, just in case.

KormaPolice · 12/06/2020 07:52

I have already. They have closed the branch where I work. I could be considered for a role at another branch but distance wise it's not doable

Cheesecakejar · 12/06/2020 07:53

50/50, I work at a tourist attraction in the catering department. The longer I'm not at work the more concerned I get, there has been talk of redundancies. I also haven't worked there for 2 years yet so I'm easy to get rid of! I hope not though, it's convenient and I enjoy it. It would be interesting if we could all update this thread when we know what is happening...

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/06/2020 07:55

I'm 50/50. I've been furloughed since March. My boss has pledged to get everyone back by the time furlough ends in October but business really needs to pick up for that to happen. I will probably be the first to go being the most junior member of staff in the office.

Amicompletelyinsane · 12/06/2020 07:58

I'm on furlough and work part time. Same hours each week. My work are now saying people still on furlough will need to change hours. So it's their clever way to make people not come back without having to make me redundant. I can't work the other days but the contract doesn't specify which days I work. But I've always worked them.

BestOption · 12/06/2020 08:10

Possibly. Probably even. I currently work with children, in schools - private boarding schools, but I don't work for the school & my job is very specific. It's so hard to know if/when largely international boarding schools will return?! Also I have a few underlying health conditions,so I'm not even sure if I'll want to go back. Social Distancing is not possible.

Because of my underlying conditions I'm not looking for other jobs in this sector (could do my job privately, not through a school) but also outside of independent schools it really doesn't pay enough for me to live on and I like my job I have - so it's wait & see really.

No idea when the decision will be made either as it won't be until the schools know what they're doing....then after that whether they still want us.

Trying to take it one day at a time.

Still more worried about surviving the pandemic than what comes after tbh.

BestOption · 12/06/2020 08:14

@Cheesecakejar

it would be interesting if we could all update this thread when we know what is happening

Yes, it would.

I have put it on my threads I'm watching & will post when I know anything.

ClientQ · 12/06/2020 08:20

No, I was furloughed from March and am now back at work busier than ever!

AvoidingRealHumans · 12/06/2020 08:24

I work in a well known hotel, I think our branch will definitely need to scale back some staff. I'm hoping I'm not one of them as come September I would have been there 2 years and there are a fair few newer members of staff. We are usually fully booked so hopefully when the world begins turning again we can go back to that.

Mightymurphy · 12/06/2020 08:30

I am hopeful that my job will be fine but I do think we will be back on a part time rota and last furloughed until October.

ihavenoidea20 · 12/06/2020 08:34

I think it's possible. I work in a hotel, we had too many staff before all this happened and for a while i expect we will have hardly any work so I guess it's likely they could make a few people redundant. They have been saying we will go back one at a time based on risk factors (health issues etc) staggered shifts, hours being dropped dramatically. I have been looking for work elsewhere as i'm not going to be able to live on just 1 day of work a week! Crap situation but what can you do?

GlittercheeksOakleaf · 12/06/2020 08:42

I wasn't officially furloughed, I've just been at home and my employer has continued to pay me. I work in a support role within a school.

I've been called in for a meeting today and I'm expecting to be made redundant as my role won't be viable until September at the earliest, possibly right up to January. They can't justify paying me to stay at home for 9 months.

WanderingMilly · 12/06/2020 09:01

I'm expecting to be laid off but no-one has said anything yet. In fact, I was surprise to be furloughed, I only started a week before lockdown so I'm very new...
I'm in a private school, working with children but not teaching. there are others working in the same capacity with more experience, and now the school has so few children attending, plus there is no boarding, they really don't need me. Most of the staff are still furloughed, just a few are back. They don't keep in touch much, just the odd letter to say we're staying on furlough. I feel quite left out, so another reason to assume I will go. In fact, one of my colleagues used to text a lot but has stopped, I am fairly certain she has been brought back in but doesn't want to say....
I just let them get on with it and if I go, I will go. I've looked for other things but very little in my area and my age is against me.

Ozgirl75 · 12/06/2020 09:10

We furloughed our staff and suffered a 90%drop in sales through April and May. We’ve now brought one back on 4 days and certainly plan to bring the others back, but I can’t lie, there are two that will be made redundant if sales don’t pick up to the level they were before. We can probably offer part time but I don’t know if they would be able to drop from full time to 2 days a week.
Tricky times indeed.
