If you've been furloughed, are you expecting to be made redundant?

I've been furloughed since April, even thought I was originally told it was just for cash flow purposes (company still fully operational but taking advantage of the free 2.5k) the longer it goes on the more I think they are getting used to coping without me and if they decide they need to make job cuts I will be the obvious choice to go. I think there's a fair chance I'll be made redundant but could be wrong. What about others who've been furloughed, are you confident of a return?

I work for a UK based holiday company who were very successful before lockdown and I would expect to continue to be when lockdown is eased.
I expect we'll all go back in some capacity building up to full time eventually

DH has been re-furloughed but it's mainly for childcare reasons - he's been working from home. He does internet security software so that side of his company is booming (a few people who do real-life security may fear redundancy)

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 12/06/2020 10:24

DW (nursing home) is on rotating furlough, 3 weeks on and off at 100% salary.

dontgobaconmyheart · 12/06/2020 12:47

Not on furlough personally (though no better off as I'm unemployed due to serious ill health). However my DP works in finance mgmt for a company with a fair % of the workforce on furlough. He/they have spent most of lockdown working out what will be feasible - unfortunately although the official line is wait and see, we hope to have everyone back, ultimately yes, they're going to make redundancies and the furloughed staff will be the first port of call.

With that said the business is ailing badly as a result of lockdown. It seems touch and go whether the majority of it goes down entirely at this point so nobody's job, including DP's is anywhere near guaranteed even if he is the last to go because he'll be needed until the end to close the thing down Hmm

Made redundant from September. I'm devastated.

PracticalTacticalBrilliance · 12/06/2020 14:24

Been furloughed since April & in all honesty I am waiting to be made redundant. The company is still functioning & everyone still working has also taken a pay cut. They did say it was pre-emtive so the company can survive, which I think it will. However, I am not essential so am assuming it'll happen at some point.
Very frustrating as I was made redundant from a long term job in Feb last year & this was supposed to be my new start.

Dh works at a massive hotel, obviously functions wont be allowed for a long time yet and not sure theyll be able to run anyway near full capacity so 300 folk are being made redundant. I just finished my degree last week and theres not one single job advertised within 30 miles of here, and i do mean none.

Cheesecakejar · 13/06/2020 15:54

@GlittercheeksOakleaf I'm really sorry to hear that Flowers at least you have been gave a decent amount of notice, if you can take any positives from this. I really hope you can find something suitable ASAP!

borntohula · 13/06/2020 16:12

Already have!

pinkazing · 13/06/2020 16:27

@GlittercheeksOakleaf sorry to hear that at least you have some time. Hope you can find something soon.FlowersWine

Yes and No

I was furloughed mid March pretty much as soon as it was announced.

I’ve been back since beginning of June but my department is restructuring and my team will go from 4 members to 1...given I’m the only one of the team back I’m fairly confident I won’t be made redundant but they’re wiping out 3/4 of the workforce on that teamSad

I was adamant furlough wasn’t being used to identify redundancies (we put 90% of the company on furlough) but they’ve got used to doing without certain roles/people have picked up parts of other people’s roles so they’ve decided they just don’t need as many people.

Imonlydoingwhatican · 13/06/2020 16:35

My husband was furloughed since march, he returned monday. We fully expected him to be laid off. Still a few people off.

GlittercheeksOakleaf · 13/06/2020 19:50

@cheesecakejar @pinkzaking thank you. I'm feeling better today, it was coming so not unexpected but still a bit of a shock too as I wasn't expecting it this soon. Got to meet HR next week to go through next steps so hopefully they can help me find another role but if not I've got a while before I need to panic.

Redcrow · 13/06/2020 19:53

I had to take furlough for childcare at the beginning and knew straight away I'd be made redundant. My boss asked for volunteers to take furlough but was cross when I did (I needed to). I was made redundant two weeks ago

Rushhomeroad · 13/06/2020 19:55

Yes, business is down and don't know if it will recover in time for the end of furlough, so may be redundant by the end of the year

P0RTIA · 13/06/2020 19:56

Yes, I’m so worried about it, I’m trying to set up my own business.

PracticalTacticalBrilliance · 27/06/2020 18:14

Further to the above, I had a chat scheduled with HR on Monday, I was worried but it genuinely was a chat to see how I was doing. They said there are no plans for redundancies at the moment. I then got a call later in the week saying they were bringing back all the furloughed staff to wfh1 day a week from the 1st July. Fingers crossed it continues this way, I'm quite relieved.

BarbedBloom · 27/06/2020 18:53

My husband has been off since March but goes back week after next (we are in Wales). I do know that they are going to let go some of the others, but luckily my husband works in a department that is difficult to train people up in and is also trained in all of the other departments too, so we expected him to be safe. We are very lucky really.

pinkcattydude · 27/06/2020 19:28

I’ve been extended by another month. Not hopeful

isseywith4vampirecats · 27/06/2020 20:48

have already gone back to one of my jobs not 100% secure as a small cat charity (I fundraise on ebay) and if they don't get enough funding they may fold in the near future , my other job TGI Fridays I go back next week and as far as I know they are in quite a good position financially so unless there is a major downturn of people eating out my job should be there for a good while yet , unlike frankie and bennies who are shutting some stores don't know if our neighbour ( both on same plaza ) will open again

Cheesecakejar · 12/07/2020 11:09

Furlough has just rolled on and on for me. Week 16 now. Have been told we will know by 31st July if we are to be made redundant! Will update then...
