Do you have a child that is sensitive to uncomfortable clothing? Where can I get really soft, smooth socks?

Dd is a bit sensitive to seams rubbing and clothes being "stiff" especially socks.
In the past we have had to make trips to the shops to touch socks for softness, stretchiness and scratchiness, but can't do that at the moment.
Does anyone have a similar problem and can suggest brands? I have already ordered a few online and had to pass them on to my niece, as not comfortable.
Patterned socks are usually scratchy, and not being stretchy enough is uncomfortable, as is having a seam in the toe. Not being soft enough is also bad, so bamboo might be better. She is still in child sizes.
Can anyone help?

I bought dd playing black bamboo ones in Tesco they are brilliant and virtually no toe seam but they are ladies so start at a 3. I've bought plain soft ones in past and they've worn them inside out which solves the seam issue.

Snowjive2 · 11/06/2020 21:29

BAM online. Really soft and plain or lots of patterns.

BookShop · 11/06/2020 21:30

We have a DD who hates any toe touching fabric. Bamboo is the way forward.

M&S do socks call ultimate comfort which are seamfree. They are the only socks my autistic child will tolerate

PatriciaHolm · 11/06/2020 21:35

Try www.sensorysmart.co.uk - not cheap but good quality.

Equimum · 11/06/2020 21:37

I was going to say M&S. DS is sensitive on his feet and we alway but his get school sock there as they are soft and seem less (and stay that way for as long as the socks last). I appreciate that your DD may not want dark grey ankle socks the whole time, but their other plain socks may be similar.

The sockshop online does seamless bamboo socks that have completely revolutionised our morning routine. They usually have a deal of some sort. They are so soft that they dont last as long as regular socks so I tend to buy in bulk.

We have never looked back.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 11/06/2020 21:49

BAM and Sock Shop for soft bamboo socks. DH has just got some from Sock Shop. He’s very fussy and doesn’t like socks with a grippy welt at the top. He’s very pleased with them. Mine are from BAM. Soft, cosy and warm.

FluffBalled · 11/06/2020 21:50

TK Maxx - calvin klein/faulk/pringle - must be tumble dried Grin

Bamboo don't work here for some reason. Turning existing socks inside out to avoid seams has occasionally worked as a temporary fix.

FluffBalled · 11/06/2020 21:52

sorry it's falke not faulk!

Sickoffamilydrama · 11/06/2020 21:55

Depending on their age I'd keep an eye on this I thought my DD was just a bit sensitive to materials as she got older I noticed her doing other things and one day twigged when I found her blue because she would turn the shower to cold that something was going on. She was diagnosed with a sensory processing disorder and later autism.

Not that it's a given but I know a few other families with the sock story!

Whathappenedtothelego · 11/06/2020 21:56

Thanks so much, I will look at all of these.
We are no strangers to the turning clothes inside out trick, but for some reason it doesn't work with socks.

My DD will only wear these direct.asda.com/george/kids/girls-underwear-socks-tights/grey-ankle-socks-10-pack/GEM725637,default,pd.html?cgid=D25M2G1C9

They don't seem like they would be the comfiest but she always says how smooth they are and they wash really well.

feliciabirthgiver · 11/06/2020 22:02

Thank you so much for this post and all the helpful suggestions, I thought this was just a quirk of my DD, are seamfree tights also available (we have many tears over this before school - back in the day)?

Epwell · 11/06/2020 22:04

Try looking on eczema clothing websites for soft cotton clothing without seams, you can get 100% cotton socks and also things like 100% cotton school shirts without seams, cotton trousers etc. It's a nightmare - I've had to buy cotton shirts, take them apart, and have them remade without stiffener in the collars and cuffs from material from a separate shirt, I have to cut ALL labels out of everything, I've had to have school skirts taken apart and a lining inserted. I've imported 100% cotton tights from Germany and organic cotton underwear from France in a bid to find clothing my DD can tolerate, all at vast expense. It gets better as they get older! I second the suggestion about autism, my DD is awaiting assessment for Asperger's Syndrome. This is very real to them and causes them real distress.

PinkBuffalo · 11/06/2020 22:04

I have major Sensory issues with clothes!
One tip for days when it is REALLY bad I can only tolerate bed socks. Might just be something else to consider
I also found socks from George in Asda to be most Comfortable for me on good days

Voice0fReason · 11/06/2020 22:09

Sensorysmart ^^
Truly seamless socks
Bloody amazing!!

worriedandannoyed · 11/06/2020 22:31

My daughter has the same issue - Elle socks (can buy on eBay or amazon) are seamless and a lot cheaper than other types of seamless socks.

For tights the best ones I've found are Pex tights, also a lot cheaper than other brands. You can buy them online and in school shops in lots of different colours. How old is your daughter? I think I might have a few unworn pairs somewhere

UrbanDoughnut · 11/06/2020 23:16

All Birds socks. They're expensive but good. I have a couple of pairs and they're comfortable

JeffVaderneedsatray · 11/06/2020 23:57

I hear you with the socks problem.
My DD is 12 and has a form of autism. Her feet are a source of massive sensory issues and socks were the bane of my life.
For a while we bought cheapo Asda ankle socks and accepted that maybe 3 out of the 7 pairs in a pack might be acceptable.
We had huge success with tube socks from Sensory Smart as linked above for a while but currently we use bamboo sports socks. I get them from TK Maxx or Amazon. They are Sock Shop ones - trainer liners.
We have tried socks inside out but that doesn't work at all.

Stompythedinosaur · 12/06/2020 00:18

We get these seamless bamboo socks for dd2 who has sensory issues. They are the only ones that were acceptable after an extensive search.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 12/06/2020 00:24

We have a child who really struggles with socks.

Keen shoes have been a lifesaver - they adjust in every direction so can give the exact pressure she needs- they also dont need socks and she can tolerate them in a way she couldnt tolerate other sandal type shoes... ours were H2 something. Worn most the year for this reason!

Whathappenedtothelego · 12/06/2020 11:57

Thank you so much again! Dd will be very grateful.
That's interesting PinkBuffalo that you say you have bad days, because I was thinking this has been slightly fuelled by anxiety at the whole lockdown situation - it's always been an issue I'm aware of, but never a massive deal involving sock refusal.
Hopefully we can find something acceptable from all these ideas.

DS didn't specifically say he had an issue with socks for a long time. But what was very interesting is that once we got the sock situation sorted, his overall willingness to get dressed increased. I suspect that all along he'd been dreading putting his socks on so was avoiding getting dressed at all.

sonypony · 12/06/2020 13:11

www.sensorysmart.co.uk/seamless-socks-163-c.asp

Those are the ones we use. We did have some success with John Lewis brand as the seam was a lot better than others but that was a few years ago.
