How are other people managing with no public toilets open?!

I want to start going out again next week, nothing too adventurous, just a visit to my nearest town centre to get a bit of shopping and have a coffee (although I know the coffee shops will be take away only). I haven't left my house since the 24th March. But,I am told that all coffee shops, and the toilets in the shopping mall are closed for the time being. I cannot feasibly entertain the idea of going out for several hours without needing to visit the toilet at some point! How are other people managing? When I mentioned this to a friend of mine, she said 'Get yourself one of those portable urinal things'. Hmm Right. But you can't use one of those in the middle of the high street,or in a shopping centre!
Is this affecting anyone else? And when are the toilets likely to opened again?!

I have been very lucky all ours stayed open normal opening hours. I am actually grateful to our local council!

Imaystillbedrunk · 10/06/2020 21:26

We've had a few stay open. The supermarket ones have.

Ghostlyglow · 10/06/2020 21:30

I really want someone to ask about this in the daily briefings.

thenightsky · 10/06/2020 21:30

The few times I've gone out, I've made sure I've not had any liquids for a few hours before.

Siennabear · 10/06/2020 21:32

I’ve bought a she wee. Haven’t actually used it yet. I just don’t go anywhere where I know there’s no toilet.

I think more toilets will be re-opening once the shops are open again. For example Liverpool One (shopping centre) are opening theirs on Monday

RelapsedChocoholic · 10/06/2020 21:35

I live in London and have been using toilets in the train stations/ planning my walking routes accordingly

Is there a station in your town that might have their loos open?

Legoandloldolls · 10/06/2020 21:37

Some toilets are open OP. We have driven to two beaches and not needed the loo, but the loos was open. Council run loos.

I just drink less a good few hours before I go out and do t spend too long out. Its doable as not many shops are open anyway

ALongHardWinter · 10/06/2020 21:39

RelapsedChocoholic Thank you,it didn't occur to me that the ones in train stations might be open. There is a station quite near to the shopping centre,I'll check before I go whether it is open.

Fortunately the main shopping centre's were open when a long run got the better of my digestive system. Normally there are well positioned toilets in a park halfway round. I was getting nervous!

Soph88888 · 10/06/2020 23:13

Supermarket loos are open.
I’ve been In a bush a few times. Pretty awful and embarrassing but I’m heavily preg and pretty annoyed they’ve closed all the toilets

Just posted on another thread - can’t go out . I need the toilet frequently due to severe bladder issues, rely on regular catheterising etc . Have a can’t wait card, radar key etc . Waiting on NHS treatment but told that won’t be til Christmas due to covid delay - so have to live with severe symptoms til then .

Given there are zero toilets open anywhere near me I can’t go anywhere for longer than an hour at best . If I waited I’d at minimum be in severe pain, worst I’d end up with a UTI/kidney infection .

GarlicMcAtackney · 10/06/2020 23:35

I posted on the other thread about this, but public toilets are obviously a virus hotbed, and have a machine that blasts the toilet air at you. someone would have to be paying poverty wage labourers to clean the toilet in full PPE after each user. £8 an hour, Would you do it?

I’m happily safe and home, not twatting around shops as a leisure activity, so no need to be shitting on the streets like what’s happening in my local touristy town.

HeIenaDove · 10/06/2020 23:41

People are shopping to buy food. I went out to do this today and still had to go for a wee. Its even worse when im on my period.

We dont all have the privilege of being able to stay home and shop online.

Thisdressneedspockets · 11/06/2020 00:52

I have a car so that makes it easier, providing a bit of privacy.

These make for an expensive wee, a she wee and a bottle would be cheaper.

Hearing others, we are lucky. Our local city centre (more like a town) have kept one set of toilets open. The local Morrison’s also have their toilets open.

RainbowMum11 · 11/06/2020 00:56

I am managing by not going so far away from home and for long enough that I need a public toilet.

CountessFrog · 11/06/2020 00:58

It’s disgraceful. I run a commercial property and it was clear when I reopened it last week that people had been pissing and shitting down the side of the building.

PickAChew · 11/06/2020 01:01

Short journeys. I've had some painful walks home where my bladder has been used to a loo break and refused to be overruled without a protest.

ALongHardWinter · 11/06/2020 01:01

GarlickMcAtackney I'm not 'twatting around shops as a leisure activity'! As I said,I haven't been out for nearly 11 weeks and would like to start getting my own shopping rather than relying on others! And I certainly wouldn't 'shit on the street'!

I don’t go out except to go to work. No toilets = me not going. I’ve been sending hubby shopping. Can’t see that changing in the near future unless toilets are open.
I do have a shewee but would rather not use it.

MaggieMay1972 · 11/06/2020 01:13

Go before I go out, As I have always done. There’s only one public Khari in the town where I live anyway plus a good many of the pubs have gone. I guess some of the shops may have them. Restaurants of course but they are all closed. Station I guess, if you were desperate.

Thesunrising · 11/06/2020 01:20

Bladder retraining can help to an extent unless you have a severe medical issue. Drink more at home to get your bladder used to holding more and try not to go to the toilet so often, as repeated emptying trains your bladder into holding less. Good explanation here www.guysandstthomas.nhs.uk/resources/patient-information/gynaecology/bladder-retraining.pdf
