How are other people managing with no public toilets open?!

I want to start going out again next week, nothing too adventurous, just a visit to my nearest town centre to get a bit of shopping and have a coffee (although I know the coffee shops will be take away only). I haven't left my house since the 24th March. But,I am told that all coffee shops, and the toilets in the shopping mall are closed for the time being. I cannot feasibly entertain the idea of going out for several hours without needing to visit the toilet at some point! How are other people managing? When I mentioned this to a friend of mine, she said 'Get yourself one of those portable urinal things'. Hmm Right. But you can't use one of those in the middle of the high street,or in a shopping centre!
Is this affecting anyone else? And when are the toilets likely to opened again?!

I have been struggling. Have a bad bladder. Can’t go anywhere.

DaisyBag · 11/06/2020 06:41

Wild wees here too.

whatswithtodaytoday · 11/06/2020 06:49

I'm not going out unless I can get home if I need the loo. As a pp said, they're a virus hotbed. I'd love to go to the sea for a walk, but it's half an hour away and that's a bit far.

I don't know when I'll feel comfortable using them again.

homemadecommunistrussia · 11/06/2020 06:56

I use the loo before I go out and don't go very far.
Will be a while I think before shops have toilets open I think. I know we have no plans to open ours.
I can't believe how many people are peeing down alleys and in the park.Angry

swapsicles · 11/06/2020 07:02

Restricted fluids, especially caffeine based, wee before you go.
I went on a walk weeks ago and didn't heed that advice, I can usually go for ages but this time I simply couldn't hold it and had to let go whilst almost home, luckily was wearing dark jeaggings and a long top, literally nowhere to go for a wild wee
Tena lady is a possibility? No one would know and easy to hide if you got caught short.

I'm hoping more and more loos will start opening - I was checking to make sure that London Zoo would have loos open when they open next week and they will (albeit with queues, social distancing and extra cleaning). Obviously that's not very helpful unless you happen to be in the zoo but I'm hoping it's what more and more places will do.

Certainly going to the toilet before leaving the house, and avoiding tea and coffee during the day, other drinks ok in small doses.

I'm sure that keeping the toilets closed is part of the gov's plan to limit how far we can move (no apologies for the conspiracy theory), while they tell us it's about hygiene. Big supermarkets have been open so far, in my experience; also motorway service areas, although I know that's only helpful if there's one on your route; these had only alternate cubicles open. It takes careful planning, though. I have also done rural wild wees, with no shame at all.

Many moons ago I used to do a job driving around a big city centre, where sneaky wild wees were impossible, and I had to plan toilet stops into my day; public ones where I could park my car were as rare as hens' teeth, even in petrol stations (many were closed because of drug users), I had them marked on my map. I learned that my limit was about three hours.

DartmoorWilderness · 11/06/2020 07:18

I agree a real issue- I have IBS and so wild wees aren't the issue for me (!) It literally means I can't go out in case I have an IBS attack

dottiedodah · 11/06/2020 07:27

Our Sainsburys loos are indeed open (wouldnt be able to shop there O/W!) Also the beach/wooded area near by has the beach loos open as well .I would check before you venture out .Would expect loos to re open on the 15th (Not venturing out to shops quite then though!)

ExclamationPerfume · 11/06/2020 07:37

There is not one toilet open in our city centre. My poor Mum couldn't wait and had an accident.

catfeets · 11/06/2020 07:58

Well I've never in my life peed outside so I'll be continuing to not be disgusting.
I will limit liquids and not go too far from home. There are very few public toilets near me anyway so it's always been an issue, not just during the last few weeks.

I've only had one 'long' trip where we went walking for a few hours at a National trust property but we made sure there were toilets first. I have a 4mth old so don't have to worry about toilets for her, but they did have changing facilities open.

Today we do have to go out quite far and for a fair few hours and I haven't been able to get tickets for anywhere reasonably priced so we can use their toilets so we'll likely cut the day as short as possible and not drink anything. We can't be out too long with the baby in the car anyway so shouldn't be a problem.

Anyone who thinks it's ok to pee or crap in the streets has a serious issue and it's a real shame they aren't seeing any consequences of their disgusting actions. I feel so sorry for anyone who has had to deal with any 'leavings' - I know I couldn't sort it out myself, I'd be puking.

I don't think it helps that it's seen by a lot of people as normal that men can just pee in public. NO ONE should be doing it. If you know you can't hold it and know there's no toilets near by then don't bloody go out!

Missymoo71 · 11/06/2020 08:35

This has been the reason why I can't go for walks, go shopping etc. I have Crohns Disease so literally can only walk where public loos are available. There is no "going before I leave" it just doesn't work that way unfortunately 😔

thenightsky · 11/06/2020 13:42

There's human excrement in shop doorways in our town centre. The homeless have to go somewhere I suppose.

HeIenaDove · 11/06/2020 13:57

Do you not think those of us with overactive bladders have tried all this aleady. Ive dried not drinking tea or coffee. Ive tried drinking water, ive tried drinking a small amount of water. Ive tried not drinking anything at all. It does NOT make ANY difference. I really think there are people who simply do not see other people as human!!

There was a long long thread on here a while ago about misogyny in the medical profession. Women with overactive bladders were discussed on there. A lot of us have been dismissed and told its normal. Its even worse when im on my period. How am i expected to change that? Osmosis? The power of prayer? Witchcraft perhaps? Ive not peed outside since childhood. Who the hell to you think deals with all the UTIs caused by this issue. The NHS y"all been clapping for!!

IwishIhadaMargarita · 11/06/2020 13:58

I am quite lucky and have a bladder of steel. I go in the morning and then once in the day, once in the evening and last thing at night. However there are times even I have to go , usually if out on a drive I’ll take the opportunity if I can. It might be worth checking which shops have loos before you go but if just going for a food shop I wouldn’t even think about it.

DaisyBag · 11/06/2020 16:36

Well I've never in my life peed outside so I'll be continuing to not be disgusting.

It's not disgusting, it's nature! 🤣

If you take away the social convention for humans, it's exactly what other animals do and I doubt you think they're disgusting!

Shitting outside is probably a step too far... and I agree that for people with health concerns it's not that simple but, for most of us, an occasional wild wee isn't a major problem.

Deathraystare · 11/06/2020 16:40

Well I used to use Westfield (White City), but luckily the only times I am out is to work or quickly buy a few bits so not really that bad but I am a slave to my bladder"!

Am wondering how a shewee works.

CarlaH · 11/06/2020 16:48

I've wondered about how a shewee works.

Can you use them if you are wearing trousers?
