If so what for, and how did it work out?

Called an ambulance for my son a few years ago - turned out he was having a massive panic attack and all the blood was going from his extremities to his heart to keep it racing. He was in agony as paralysis crept upwards from toes/fingers to legs and arms. The crew arrived in ten minutes and were amazing. I was apologising profusely and they said they would rather come to ten calls like mine than one with drunken idiots injured by their own stupidity.

Called the police at 1am last year after I was burgled whilst asleep upstairs. The call handler stayed on the line talking me through what to do with cards etc and giving me numbers to call until the crew got there. They were amazing too and stayed until the door repair man arrived and secured the house. I didn't sleep the rest of the night. The follow up was great too - they never caught the burglars but kept me updated regularly.

Have called 101 for advice when an ex boyfriend of 15 years phoned me at work and ranted for ten minutes accusing me of stalking him and attacking his wife!

A few times.

Once was when a man was burgling a neighbour. I saw him climbing into their window and back out again and watched where he went. The police came really quickly and caught him down the road so she got her stuff back.

Another time when DH got mugged/threatened when walking home from work. They came the next day to talk to DH(it happened at night). DH had to go to a ID parade but didn’t think the men were them.

Another time I called them when I was on a bus which was at a stop at a shopping centre. A man was attacking a car and a driver through the window with a metal bar. I don’t know what happened as our bus left, I was too scared to get off as I was alone with ds who was a baby at the time but I hope the driver was ok.

Once as a child when parents were fighting.

More recently I met an elderly lady in the street at 4am, barefoot in her nightdress and absolutely frozen. She had mental health problems and was quite aggressive. The call handler couldn't be less interested and told me to tell her to go home Hmm

Once, when I got home with the DC to find we'd been burgled. The police came quite quickly and were nice but no one was ever caught.

Dougalthesyrianhamster · 11/06/2020 09:19

@mbosnz What's a 'gourd?' (Genuine question)

Funtcase95 · 11/06/2020 09:40

A few times for following suspect drink/drug drivers. They give you a incident no. And occasionally ask you to follow so a unit can catch up.

Years ago I saw some legs disappear into a window. The local police station was just round the corner and within a couple of minutes a whole van load of officers turned up. I counted at least 8 of them getting out - turned out the owner had locked himself out...
They said I'd done the right thing but I was embarrassed at the sheer quantity of them. I guess as it was so local, they'd thought they'd be sure to catch the burglar in the act.

Have called for a house party at 4 am in the morning because loads of drunken teenagers were screaming at the top of their lungs whilst jumping on a trampoline in a garden. I think the police received several calls about that one.

PurplePansy05 · 11/06/2020 10:11

Actually, I also called the police to report my now ex-partner for drink driving. I saw him drinking a lot, we returned to my house and had an argument. He was aggressive towards me, threw my items around the room, then stormed off and drove to his parents house. I was in my early 20s then, called the police immediately and reported him. They arrived within minutes, took a statement and then tracked him down. He was a horrible person.

Lweji · 11/06/2020 10:18

Yes.

Once because I literally watched burglars enter a cafe after they broke the window. I was still watching TV late and the cafe alarm started ringing. The police arrived about 10-15 min late at a leisurely pace and I never got a call back.

A few times over exH. One pre-leaving him and the rest after. Somewhat similar result as above. Hmm

Both not UK, small town.

One time for bike joy riders on a public green at the back of the house. I think they sent a patrol to a nearby street. Never knew the result. This was UK, Greater London.

A gourd is a type of fruit with a hard skin (like a melon but not the same family). It is also a slang term for the human head/mind - as in 'I'm bored out of my gourd' = I'm bored out of my mind.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/06/2020 12:20

Yes, when I got home from work and saw someone breaking into the day nursery opposite. And he escaped into the train tracks. The police arrived 30 seconds after I put the phone down. They'd been investigating a break in at the school
At the elves of the road. I presume he was caught. As he was wearing very distinctive clothing and not many people would be on the railway.
Also phoned non emergency number many times at work.

WowLucky · 11/06/2020 12:24

I work in a PRU, we call the police quite often. If there's a knife involved they usually attend in large numbers quite quickly. If it's drugs they might be there by the end of the month. If it's a student's MH crisis manifesting in violence, or a student refusing to leave the premises they won't help - there are other more suitable agencies (apparently!).

JacobReesMogadishu · 11/06/2020 12:27

A few times.

Escaped horses on a road

Kids in the central reservation of the m4

Someone driving at 1am with no lights on his car at all but passenger was hanging out the window shining a torch infront!

Gingerkittykat · 11/06/2020 12:33

I called 999 when a car was driving dangerously by swerving along the twisty backroad at about 20mph, if something had come the other way then it would have been a disaster.

They phoned me back 10 minutes later to ask what direction it had taken and to let me know the driver was someone with previous convictions for drug driving.

I was really impressed with their response.

I also called non emergency line to report a dead deer on the road, I've no idea if they acted on it or not.

nomorefencepostsplease · 11/06/2020 12:35

Several times but by accident.

Lived somewhere where the phone number prefixes began 99.
Was often at my mates and would call a taxi to go home.
We both worked somewhere where you would dial 9 for an outside line so it was second nature.

They always rang back to check that we were OK - I think I must have ended up on a list somewhere Blush

  1. Dog running along motorway
  2. Erratic driver on motorway
  3. Robbery at the newsagents across the road from where I lived then
  4. When my dc didn't come home
