Sentimental and tasteful or hideous and cringe? I can’t make up my mind!

I got one years ago from a dear friend to honour my stillborn daughter. At the time, I was a bit Confused But over the years, I've bought them for others and I really do think they're quite beautiful.
I wouldn't want a whole collection of them. One is enough. But they are very tasteful and simple. I really like them. I really like that the one I do have is connected to something very precious to me. They're better than flowers. And actually, they are beautifully made. I prefer the simpler ones.

Itis6oclocksomewhere · 10/06/2020 16:51

Not really to my taste, but we have one of the couple. It was bought for us as a wedding gift. It did amuse me that when I looked at it the other day, I realised that the colour of the hair had faded on both figures. Somewhat apt as we are now sporting grey hair ourselves Grin

mylittlesandwich · 10/06/2020 17:02

I quite like them, I don't have any because I have enough Disney ornaments. My mum has one on that's quite cute. It's the cat one.

GooodMythicalMorning · 11/06/2020 11:33

Mine definitely aren't wood, having had both mine break, like a resin made to look like wood.

Megan2018 · 11/06/2020 12:01

They are definitely resin - says so on the website

I used to hate them, but then I worked with a little elderly man who had an alcohol and gambling addiction. He had no children, but tons of nieces and nephews who looked out for him. The first time I went into his house, there was a telly and a sofa and nothing else, not even a carpet.

Except on the mantelpiece there were a dozen or so of the WT figures, carefully arranged and dusted.

I later found out they were the only things his family would buy him. He sold everything else to his cronies down the pub, even the carpet and the groceries his neice would drop round, but he never sold those.

RIP Harry, you nutter

Spied · 11/06/2020 12:57

I don't like them.
I think there are better more personal keepsakes.
A bit 'cheap' and not really attractive.

stayathomer · 11/06/2020 12:58

We have one given to us for our wedding too and I adore it! I think they're beautiful!

Rebelwithallthecause · 11/06/2020 12:59

I’m not a fan

At all

Pelleas · 11/06/2020 13:00

My MIL really likes them. They are so bland-looking I think it's unfair to describe them as tasteless because they just blend into the background. They don't look unattractive, but I'm not really keen on the sort of generic sentiment they set out to convey. I prefer more striking and unusual ornaments.

Nixee2231 · 11/06/2020 13:00

I find the faces (or lack thereof) creepy but at the same time for some reason I can really imagine them fitting in and looking lovely in a certain kind of house/setting. So I guess it depends on the house and what it means to you.

SistemaAddict · 11/06/2020 13:12

I love mine but this thread has me thinking. I have 16 of them. Dc buy them for me and they all mean something to us all. They bring me joy 🤷🏼‍♀️

NotEnoughTime · 11/06/2020 13:24

I think they are beautiful. I have @10 of them, all with a special meaning to me. In fact, I am just going to order the dog now as a Father's day present for my DH Smile

TaighNamGastaOrt · 11/06/2020 13:35

I have 4 of them. Got them from charity shop for less than a tenner. I quite like them, they represent our family and are quite sweet.
I do find their blank faces a bit creepy (slenderman's bastards made me lol) so they're on my windowsill facing out!

Quirrelsotherface · 11/06/2020 13:36

I have one that my mum bought me of a mother with 2 DC (I had a baby and a toddler at the time). She died 6 months later and it means the world to me. Not sure they would have been to my taste otherwise but I do think they are nice and wouldn't put them in the 'live laugh love' category.

totallynotchanging · 11/06/2020 13:53

There don't appear to be many of these figurines that have darker skin tones?

Rockbird · 11/06/2020 14:05

I've never really looked at them till now. Not keen on the blank faces but the poses are very realistic and, especially with the babies, very sweet.

peaceanddove · 11/06/2020 14:05

No, they are the ornamental equivalent of Bayliss & Harding toiletries, for when you just couldn't care less about choosing a gift.

greathat · 11/06/2020 14:15

My Nan bought me the nativity set just before she died. I love them

ViciousJackdaw · 11/06/2020 14:56

They remind me of the animated women in the Simplicity adverts from the early 90s with their blank faces. You can get one called 'Spirited Child' and there's another, called 'Gracious', who is holding a stunt pineapple.

ViciousJackdaw · 11/06/2020 14:57

I noticed that too - I didn't see any same-sex couples either.
Sewrainbow · 11/06/2020 15:08

I really like mine. The mum baby and toddler reminds me of my dc at that age. The 2 boys remind me of my boys as they got older and I have one thoughtful pose little boy which was just like my ds. I never thought about them being popular, I only know one other person who has a couple.

It's a good point about putting them away from public view, I wouldn't want any more but I think the poses were cleverly captured, more about mood than being real. My mil was rude about them Sad The facelessness doesn't bother me, I dont like her china ladies with fake unrealistic faces.

Each to their own I suppose. I dont care if other people I'm naff. I doubt anyone who has been to our building site of a house would in anyway be envious of our lack of decor at the moment!

like the results of art therapy by someone who has been through terrible trauma

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 11/06/2020 15:24

My DM bought me a Mother & Child Willow Tree figurine when I had DS and I absolutely treasure it.

It’s the only one I have, but I’ve seen one or two that I really like that I’m going to buy once my living room is decorated.

RJnomore1 · 11/06/2020 15:35

I like them but I don’t do ornaments without a purpose (vase, candle holder) so I only have one of the Xmas tree ornaments.
