My Ds, age 13 has had this appear on his back, it wasn't here at the start of the year, any ideas? I am going to make him a docs appointment. Have also found some milder ones above his knee after looking.

What on earth is this that has appeared on Ds 13 back?

Ah bless him. Bio oil worked wonders on my pregnancy stretch marks.

Stumpedasatree · 08/06/2020 10:44

I agree to check for scoliosis of the spine too, as one shoulder and one rib cage looks higher than the other. Good luck.

Whatayear2020 · 08/06/2020 10:46

Einsteinagogo yes he's always been extremely tall and slim. He's 5 foot 8, bmi on the 5th centile. His auntie has just mentioned to me about ehlers danlos as she has it, her daughters do too, so I'll check it out. He can pull his shoulders in and out of their joints etc so worth me getting it checked out even if its not.

Ah, the party trick!!

There's plenty about EDS on line so have a look. It's not super-easy to get an official diagnosis, but if you think it's needed, you must persevere because it impacts quite a lot of treatment options and future management.

Good luck - sounds like your auntie is a good source of info too 👍

Be careful with Bio oil. It contains lavender, which some people (like me) are allergic to.

AnnaMagnani · 08/06/2020 11:10

Bio oil is also not proven to help, and those of us who were teens before Bio oil existed, and did nothing about them, are not covered in stretch marks now.

Bio oil's success rests on 2 studies, sponsored by the makers of Bio Oil Hmm which they haven't fully published and a massive marketing campaign. And that stretch marks naturally get better even if you do nothing.

I remember being covered in them as a teen but they fade naturally very quickly.

We are seeing the GP later today

I know someone who has the exact same, although very faded now. They're stretch marks

Toomanycats99 · 08/06/2020 11:23

This is an interesting post - my daughter has some on her lower back straight across - I also noticed she had grown a lot lately.

TheOrigBrave · 08/06/2020 11:25

Wowser! I have never seen or even heard of stretch marks on the backs of adolescent boys. I have a 21 yo (and did have a husband!) who is over 6 foot. I think his growth spurt was not so dramatic.

You'd have thought I would have seen this at a swimming pool or at the beach in all my nearly 50 years of being on this earth!

Whatayear2020 · 08/06/2020 11:30

I'd never heard of it either! Maybe everyone's covering them up!

I think it probably does make some young people feel self conscious. My Ds would not go t shirt free, even in the house!

passthemustard · 08/06/2020 12:11

Definitely stretch marks, my boobs grew from flat as a pancake to a 34B in about a fortnight and I had exactly the same. I cried about it forever. My mum was horrified and didn't believe me that they were stretch marks. I was 13 🙄

AnnaMagnani · 08/06/2020 12:30

I had them all over my thighs, bright purple ones, after a big growth spurt. And then they just disappeared to nothing.

Sobbed my heart out over them I did when they turned up.

EnidsCrochetCorner · 08/06/2020 17:22

Any update @Whatayear2020? Just curious to know what they are.

Redhair23 · 08/06/2020 17:26

I am glad you are going to the GP about this op and I hope it goes well and you get some answers.

EinsteinaGogo · 08/06/2020 17:30

@passthemustard - so sorry that your mum gave you such a hard time - that must have made things ten times worse.

Thank god we are more enlightened (in some ways) now x

Oblomov20 · 08/06/2020 17:38

Hopefully the GP will comment advise on his posture, mild possible scoliosis aswell?

Wasabiprawns · 08/06/2020 17:43

My first thought was bartonella...had he had any tick bites?

diddl · 08/06/2020 17:49

I didn't think that Bartonella was caused by ticks?
Bigearringsbigsmile · 08/06/2020 17:51

Stretch marks

He's growing a lot

passthemustard · 08/06/2020 18:05

@EinsteinaGogo ahh thank you! ❤️

DishingOutDone · 08/06/2020 18:08

Apparently these stretch marks (large ones) can happen to boys in particular, but still worth getting GP to speculate on EDS.

DishingOutDone · 08/06/2020 18:09

(Idiopathic striae atrophicae of puberty apparently)

Whatayear2020 · 08/06/2020 18:34

Hi, just an update! GP has referred DS to the paediatrician questioning Ehlers danlos. He checked his joints and something about his arm to height ratio was indicative too.
