Do you drink herbal teas?

schoolsoutforcovid · 07/06/2020 20:53

I bought a taster pack of herbal tea to try and cut down on caffeine intake.

Just reading up on the ingredients in the bedtime one I'm currently drinking and one of them is harmful to the liver.

It's really put me off and I'm annoyed because I have enjoyed the ones I've tried so far.

Can anybody educate me on herbal tea drinking before I give the box away BlushGrin

Obviously not then. It went down the sink Sad

You've not stated which type/flavour was the culprit.

Crinkle77 · 07/06/2020 23:18

This is the problem with herbal remedies. People assume they're safe because they're herbal when they can be dangerous particularly as they can interact with prescription medication. I would imagine that tea might be dangerous if you have a liver condition or if you drink it in large quantities but otherwise guess it would be ok.

Sorry!

It was pukka nighttime tea from a taster box. Had a lemony ginger one earlier.

But then googling are herbal teas good for you I found valerian root (which was in my tea) can be toxic to the liver Confused

I just assumed they'd be a nice caffeine free alternative but now I feel like I'm medicating myself with them!

Valerian extract?

schoolsoutforcovid · 07/06/2020 23:20

Night Time: Oat flowering tops, licorice root, chamomile flower, lavender flower, limeflower, valerian root, green Rama tulsi leaf

A little persoective:

"Valerian has been implicated in a small number of cases of clinically apparent liver injury, but usually in combination with other botanicals such as skullcap or black cohosh. In view of its wide scale use, valerian has to be considered a very rare cause of hepatic injury."

That is the night time ingredients list.

Think I'll try something else! I don't know enough about it Blush

Rooibus (redbuh) tea is a good naturally caffiene free tea, has a good flavour unlike decaff tea which is like dishwater

I drink a lot of Pukka teas, the mint ones are really nice and I like the chai

GuyFawkesDay · 07/06/2020 23:28

I like the twinings chamomile and honey.

As a herbal tea newbie I drank fruity ones. Rosehip is nice. Then started on mint ones, which I still drink a lot.

Chamomile is my evening go to though.

GoddessArtemis · 07/06/2020 23:30

If you have high blood pressure you need to stay away from liquorice, unfortunately most herbal teas have liquorice in them. My husband was put on medication for high blood pressure and was told to stay away from herbal teas which is unfortunate as he consumed quite a lot. I managed to find a few without it but not many. I drink fennel tea, it tastes of absolutely nothing 😂

schoolsoutforcovid · 07/06/2020 23:35

Ok, I'm sad because I was looking forward to my new "tea journey". But I'll pass them on to MIL.

I'm glad you said how to pronounce that or I'd be asking OH to get me some Rooey Boss tea BlushGrin

Clipper chamomile tea is lovely

Apileofballyhoo · 07/06/2020 23:35

I don't like the flavour of that night time one but the relax one is nice. Pale box with flowers on it.

schoolsoutforcovid · 07/06/2020 23:36

It has the mint variation in this box. That doesn't seem to have whatsit root in

OP posts:
schoolsoutforcovid · 07/06/2020 23:38

This is the variety I got. I'm thinking maybe go for alternatives though. I do have a couple of health conditions and am worried about making that worse.

@schoolsoutforcovid it is actually Redbush !

Pukka have several mint teas, mint is my favourite - I like them all !

PickAChew · 08/06/2020 00:19

I drink a lot if camomile tea. I like fennel, when I can get it.

Peppermint just gives me heartburn.

schoolsoutforcovid · 08/06/2020 00:23

Peppermint leaf (34%), spearmint leaf (34%) field mint leaf (32%).

Ok. Surely that can't do anything to my insides? I can try the mint one Grin

'Herbal teas' are many and various - some are definitely fine, one or two might be not such a good idea for a few people. DH is supposed to avoid liquorice but has drunk the occasional cupful which supposedly has it in with no apparent ill effects. He has to avoid grapefruit juice too - some drugs have interactions with things you wouldn't necessarily think of .... so if you're on any medications always read the leaflet properly.

Mint should be fine, if it does anything to your insides it's likely to be something innocuous like 'settles your stomach'.Grin

schoolsoutforcovid · 08/06/2020 00:35

Ok, mint I will try! Grin

I also have to avoid grapefruit which was what got me googling really. I'd just taken my medication

I think a Sense of balance and proportion is needed. For example, a side effect of paracetamol can be severe headaches... an irony if there ever was one. I would suggest that if you like the tea, just have a little occasionally and intersperse with others.

amusedtodeath1 · 08/06/2020 00:47

Second rooibos/redbush tea. I love the vanilla one so much, I rarely drink black tea anymore (decaf).

Kalms are made with valerian, lots of people take it everyday.

EyeDrops · 08/06/2020 00:47

It's not herbal, as such, but I really like the Yorkshire Tea Bedtime Brew. It's black but decaf with vanilla and nutmeg, it tastes wonderful and cosy, I love it in the evening.

Other than that, peppermint tastes good and is good for my digestive system!
