Habits from childhood you still have

Howcanwehelp · 07/06/2020 15:13

One of my dc wanted to bake so we made a Victoria sponge. While in the baking cupboard I sneaked some glacé cherries. I'm 39 and still munching cherries like the 5 year old me.
I can't be the only one with left over habits?

Smashing a hole in the shell of a boiled egg after eating it "so that a witch doesn't use it as a boat to sail out to sea". How bloody weird is that - but someone must have taught me, and my sister does it too.

Buckingham1988 · 07/06/2020 21:24

Fish finger sandwiches on a Saturday and going to the toilet before you leave the house (this was my mother's obsession).

wanderings · 07/06/2020 21:36

Wearing trainers without socks - I did it regularly as a child. If anyone tells me it's bad for my feet, I say that we were made to do it at primary school when walking from the classroom to the assembly hall for PE.

Sonichu · 07/06/2020 21:39

"going to the toilet before you leave the house (this was my mother's obsession)"

Same!

letsgomaths · 07/06/2020 21:40

It was a childhood ritual to be told to close my eyes (or be blindfolded) before a surprise, or big present. I love to close my eyes before receiving a big present; my DH knows this and make sure I can't see before he has something to give me.

Laiste · 07/06/2020 21:41

Twiddling my hair and

stripping food. Like - fishfingers, bounty bars, choc ices, kit kats. I nibble off all the outer coating and then eat the middle.

Laiste · 07/06/2020 21:44

Oh the boiled egg! I like to turn mine upside down when i've finished as if it's untouched. No idea why but i loved doing it as a kid. It was like going back in time via the sight of the undamaged egg shell ...... HmmGrin

poblwc · 07/06/2020 21:46

@TamzinGrey I do this too! No idea why. DH thinks it's very odd.

I say 'an animal went into the ark' if I buy someone a present and then tell them what type of animal (like a guinea pig if it's a small present). My grandfather used to say it, no idea where he got it from though.

sovielverloren · 07/06/2020 21:49

@TamzinGrey I do that too! DH thinks I am insane and I am reassured that this is a thing (although admittedly is weird!) Wonder if it's regional or are you, me and @poblwc actually related?

HandsDownRoundTheTown · 07/06/2020 21:58

@Stompythedinosaur Me too! Always slightly pretending to be a tiger or other ferocious but majestic jungle beast. Grrr.

FawnDrench · 07/06/2020 22:17

Sleeping with each of my fingers entwined into the pillow slip and in between each of my toes entwined in the duvet cover - very relaxing.

Velvian · 07/06/2020 22:28

I salute magpies and throw salt over my left shoulder if I spill any.

Another weird childhood family one is cold baked beans with shepherd's pie or bubble & squeak.

AriettyHomily · 07/06/2020 22:30

Taking a glass of water to bed even though I only have about one sip a year.

Squeezing laughing cow triangles out like a worm.

HeronLanyon · 07/06/2020 22:34

I have a little chanty song thing I catch myself doing often when littering or cleaning etc.
Saluting a magpie (I have to pretend I am scratching my forehead often)
Hoiking up leggings when wearing wellies - I do it just like I did when a child. Did it just this morning.
Kicking leaves in gutters - often just a subtle one foot swipe when I’m liic but I can’t resist.
Rubbing my hair when watching tv. (Not twirling/flicking -nothing too distracting).
When swimming up to a beach I can just float in the shallows on my stomach for a long time mindlessly - that’s definitely something I did a lot when a kid.

H1978 · 07/06/2020 22:39

leaving the hallway light open at night, otherwise I can’t sleep
popping bubble wrap Grin
Licking cake batter from the bowl that’s left over

Clawdy · 07/06/2020 22:41

If anyone (but particularly DH) calls me from another room or upstairs, I answer "WHAT??" in a cross, teenage voice, apparently!

OverZoomed · 07/06/2020 22:43

Going to sleep to the sound of radio 4. Very hard for me to sleep any other way, and I’ve done it since I was about 10.

polkadotpjs · 07/06/2020 22:55

Stepping along paving stones in a one,two three , miss one pattern

MbwaKali · 07/06/2020 23:03

TamzinGrey Me too! Was taught that as a child.
Going up the stairs on all fours even though I’m in my late fifties.
Lying under the bed when I’m alone in the house, especially if there’s a sunbeam shining in. Love it.

LittleOldWineDrinker · 07/06/2020 23:05

@TamzinGrey we do this in our family too. How weird - no one else that I know does it. Think it came from my paternal granny's side. I've inflicted it on my kids now.

Geekster1963 · 07/06/2020 23:22

I’m the same with drains! I also always tie my empty crisp packets / sweet wrappers in a knot, I get that from my Dad.

Eminybob · 07/06/2020 23:41

Eating frozen peas straight out the freezer. I used to have a little cupful when I was a kid, now I just snaffle a few before the go in the pan. Ds1 does it now though.

Folding my crisp packets into triangles. Every single time.

Shouting “yoo-hoo” when walking into my mums house (we used to do this when visiting my Nan when I was little)

ExpletiveDelighted · 07/06/2020 23:48

I fold all my empty crisp packets into a little triangle, I just can't not do it, it's very satisfying.

Nat6999 · 08/06/2020 01:12

Licking bits of Oxo off my fingers when making the gravy.

Tillygetsit · 08/06/2020 02:32

Scrunching my feather pillow in bed and holding my collar when I see an ambulance until I see a 4 legged animal.
