I'm in so much pain! I can't exercise, it's painful to even walk at the moment. I have socks, splints, insoles, I'm doing stretches and nothing is shifting it.
Soery, but of a pity post, but fed up Sad

The L shaped night splint usually knock a flare up on the head for me. And I have to keep below a certain weight now or it kicks off again.

I used to have to crawl round the house, the pain was excruciating.

Elouera · 06/06/2020 20:30

Ive had it over 8mths now. I saw a podiatrist, had a gait assessment, bought a sock to wear at night, new trainers, stretch, exercise and also lost 10kg!!! Its worse!

Spoke to GP again and now referred to a clinic at the hospital. will possibly have a scan, shockwave treatment or a steroid injection! I know others have had good results from wearing bikenstocks or fit flops. I'd just like to be able to walk and not worry about the ripping, tearing pain I'll feel later on!

@Thorilicious

My PF tips are
Ibuprofen gel plus rolling chilled soft drink cans under your soles to reduce pain and inflammation.
Also massage your calves/use a foam roller on them - calf tension can tighten your PF

Do glute exercises to strengthen and stabilise your gluteus - clamshells bridges etc. Lower limb issues usually arise from exercising when you have weak glutes - this causes the whole leg to be unbalanced and pronation of the foot

Arch support exercises to strengthen foot muscles and reduce strain on PF:
Stand on a towel barefoot and scrunch your toes up to 'grab' the towel. Do this 20x for each foot.
Progress to lifting the towel etc - there are various exercises on YouTube

I've had a couple of bouts of PF - usually when I start running after a long break - this approach usually settles it in a couple of weeks, but I am generally relatively strong and active

I had this for 18 months in one foot then about 6 months ok till I got it in my other foot. I got NHS Physio on the First bout, including ultrasound, but that's maybe not available just now.

I found the insoles that Lidl sometimes do when they have a sports promotion really good (about £3.99). Also, I found Adidas Cloudform trainers better (and cheaper) than Skechers.

What really worked for me was walking barefoot, despite internet advice saying NEVER go barefoot. I discovered this on a beach in Majorca (OK, not an option just now) when I found walking on hot sand interspersed with paddling in the cooler water really helped.

Dramalady52 · 06/06/2020 20:32

I had this a few years ago and it took two years to get rid of, using gel inserts in my right shoe. Doctors just X-rayed for bone spurs but found nothing, no other treatment. Now I have it in my left foot. Never knew about foam rolling, might try that.

Veterinari · 06/06/2020 20:34

Also use superfeet or similar insoles - I have them in my slippers!

Jeremyironsnothing · 06/06/2020 20:36

An injection cured it for me. Not the painful one the doctor tried, but the one that was guided in by ultrasound after plenty of anaesthetic.

Veterinari · 06/06/2020 20:36

Yup I agree - especially on sand/beach - it's low impact on the soft surface and strengthens the arch muscles reducing stress on the PL - same idea as the towel-scrunching exercises

whatshebininagain · 06/06/2020 20:36

Also, you say you've tried socks but I did find that pressure socks (pressure on the foot rather than the DVT leg ones) helped a lot.

Sorry if this doesn't help OP, but it may help someone else. PF is a bastard hope you get it sorted.

Jeremyironsnothing · 06/06/2020 20:38

And granny sandals with a slight heel and straps round the ankle, in summer and an inch and a half heel on my boots in winter.

Completely flat shoes were no good at all

WordInYourShellLike · 06/06/2020 20:45

Sorry for not checking previous posts (have to go out) so this may have been mentioned already, but have you tried the spiky massage ball and foot stretch method? I had this for a long time and finally went to a podiatrist. She gave me a SPIKY MASSAGE BALL and told me to put it on the floor and roll my foot up and down it for a few minutes (paying special attention to the heels), twice a day and also to press my bent-up toes against a wall (from standing position) to stretch the tendons and muscles in my feet, also twice a day, 10 times per foot. It totally worked. Sorry I'm not describing the foot stretching very well, hope it makes sense! I'm hardly ever bothered by it now and haven't bothered with the exercises for ages. Have done loads of walking since lockdown and I think that's helped too, probably due to increased foot stretching

Daisychainsandglitter · 06/06/2020 21:11

You have my sympathy OP I suffered dreadfully with PF for about a year.
I found rolling a tennis ball underfoot brought some relief as well as doing calf exercises. I also used to see a physio once a week who used to tape my feet up which brought me temporary relief.
I keep it at bay now by wearing sketchers pretty much everywhere.
So painful- I hope you manage to find some relief for it soon.

After 6 months of agony with mine, I eventually got the steroid injection from the GP and the pain literally went overnight

Sunshineandflipflops · 06/06/2020 21:22

I’m just recovering from pf. I wasn’t able to run for weeks and even walking was agonising some days.
It came on suddenly after wearing an older pair of running trainers to do a 5k.
I stopped wearing slippers round the house and wore only Birkenstock’s (and still do) and if I go out I wear my running trainers or walking boots (or my Birkenstock’s).

Also, if you stand on a step backwards and drop your heels down for a minute or two, that can help ease the pain.

Mine started to ease eventually by doing these things so I have been doing the couch to 5 k programme to ease myself and my foot back in and touch wood it’s been ok.
I will never gamble with my footwear though!

Fairybatman · 06/06/2020 21:32

@Thorilicious my top top is to get treatment and wait the minimum before going back if it’s not working.

Frozen bottle of water rolled under the arch is bliss when it’s really bad. Never go barefoot, even in the house, and throw away all the sketchers. They ease the pain whilst you are wearing them but make it worse in the long run.

ExpletiveDelighted · 06/06/2020 21:59

My podiatrist specifically told me to avoid Skechers.

TeddyBeans · 06/06/2020 22:02

I came to champion Skechers too! Got some on the advice of a chiropodist when I developed PF after pregnancy. They worked miracles for me!

Namechange3007 · 06/06/2020 22:04

I've got tendinitis on the top of my foot so share your pain!!

Shouldbedoing · 06/06/2020 22:09

Skechers gave me PF. Plus weight Gain

Shouldbedoing · 06/06/2020 22:10

Sketchers make a huge range

amgine · 06/06/2020 22:14

I had this for around 18 months. I’ve been religious about wearing the right shoes - supportive trainers, crocs, good quality slippers and one pair of work shoes we’re all that didn’t aggravate it. Avoided doing anything flat footed. Limited wearing wellies or doing sport barefoot (I do martial arts). I am finally getting into short (2km) runs again. It’s annoying and it’s really easy to think it’s gone when it’s not. I am still religious about what shoes I wear now. I still do martial arts with supportive trainers except for sparring.

Also, I found rolling a spiky massage ball under my foot really helped.

H1978 · 06/06/2020 22:14

Dh has been suffering with this for a few weeks for the first time and he was advised to get a tens machine. It arrived today and so far he has used it a couple of times for 15 minutes each and already he says he can feel a difference. Hope this might help someone else.

MitziK · 06/06/2020 22:16

@sandycloud

I had it a few years ago. We had a ski holiday booked and I thought there's no way I'll be able to ski as it hurt just standing. Anyway it turned out to be the best thing. I wore ski boots all week which keep your ankle fixed in position. My plantar fasciitis was completely cured. If I get it again I'm wearing ski boots. I don't care how uncomfortable they are!!!
I used a removable cast I'd had for an ankle injury - exactly the same result.

Means you learn to run like The Terminator as well. I was so fast compared to previously, it was alarming.

forrandomposts · 06/06/2020 22:19

It can take up to 2 years to go.

I've had it 11 years. Sad

InAGarden · 06/06/2020 22:21

I wear sliders around the house, really helped and did the stretching exercises. I also found wearing Skechers for walking useful. It is painful, hope yours starts to improve soon OP.
