Is my baby gifted?

Hi all. First time poster, long time lurker.
With this being my first child, and the current issues making it difficult to compare my son to other babies development, I thought I'd ask for opinions here. A little of where my boy is at. He's 17 months, almoat outgrowing his 18-24 month clothes (bloody expensive). He can speak around 80 spoken words and 40ish in sign language. He's able to stack things really well (his best so far was 14 blocks). When it comes to puzzles etc he does the shapes in the slots really easy, same with the animal pizzles etc. Also, he only has to see you do something once, occasionally twice, and he can do it himself (within limits obviously). To this extent he now has to have his own tool kit and power drill out when I do DIY to do his own little project. He feeds himsel, helpa with food preparation, loads and unloads the washer and drier, even walks around picking up bits of rubbish to put in the bin or pulls the vaccum out and uses it (it's always on, the plug is behind a secure lock so he can't get to it. What I want to know, is this normal for a kid his age?
Oh, I feel I should mention he was crawling at 4 months, walking at 7 and a half months. At 9 months he wasn't speaking, other than the odd word, but could make 3 worded sentences with sign language.

Well this is awkward but if anything he sounds a bit behind, mine wrote a play at 8 months old.

I'm laughing totally at your play. That's so funny.

multivac · 06/06/2020 02:15

I think it is really, really, really important - and especially right now - that you identify if your baby is gifted.

We've got a planet to save, FFS!

He sounds cool. Dd1 weirdly knew the alphabet, recognized all the letters and could tell you what letter things started with at that point (she would grab the letter P and go off and find a polar bear etc). Toddlers are amazeballs little sponges. They will soak up anything and learn by copying.
Dd2 learned to read before she was two and we didn’t know. Had no idea. I love kids.
Gifted is a social construction that isn’t remotely useful. The only context in which ability matters is if a child requires additional support to do something (speech, mobility, etc). Milestones are for making sure no one is left behind, not for measuring how advanced anyone is.
If it helps, my kid who had taught himself multiplication by his third birthday finished school with no sciences and works as a lifeguard while he decides if he can bear to go to university. Ironically if he does, he’s going to study to become a teacher.
Kids are weird. Gifted is... meaningless unless it causes problems. And there are no possibilities that problems will occur for at least the next four years.

Does anyone remember Phyllis? I think OP is her husband Grin

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 06/06/2020 02:46

It’s handy you can have him help with the washing and DIY, can he put up shelves? Does he sort lights and darks?

PatricksRum · 06/06/2020 02:48

Why do you need to compare him?

He's not gifted.

FourPlasticRings · 06/06/2020 02:48

Within the normal range, yes.

Lynda07 · 06/06/2020 02:49

Your little son sounds perfectly normal to me, Daddy, a little on the advanced side but 'gifted' is something else and that can only be spotted later. By the way, crawling and walking early is no sign of intelligence and I've known very bright children who didn't speak until two or three years old causing great consternation to their parents until suddenly they took off and didn't stop nattering! They grew up to be clever and have good careers.

He sounds great, I'm sure you have lots of fun with him. Enjoy it while you can.

DoctorHildegardLanstrom · 06/06/2020 02:51

My son was loading the washing machine at 16 months I miss those times

SiaPR · 06/06/2020 02:53

You never know how they are going to turn out. My daughter is an architect, designing a new wing on the Tate. She used to eat the wood on her desk. I always thought she was slow.
-No, she's a genius.

PatricksRum · 06/06/2020 03:01

She used to eat the wood on her desk.
Grin brilliant. Love it

Ritascornershop · 06/06/2020 03:02

He might be, but it may be a bit early to tell? People are being shitty, I’ve no idea why people are so uncomfortable with the idea of intellectually advanced kids. My daughter didn’t walk till one but spoke very early and was reading chapter books easily at age 4. Her brother walked very early, didn’t speak properly till 2.5, went through the gifted high school in our city. Their toddler abilities were very different, and I’d say he was less obviously gifted as a wee one but is now more globally gifted and curious.

Keep an open mind about any and all abilities he may possess, he sounds lovely.

WhitbyGoth · 06/06/2020 03:06

Could your baby fly at 17 months?

multivac · 06/06/2020 03:06

He might be, but it may be a bit early to tell?

People are being shitty, I’ve no idea why...

I refer the hon. poster to their own point, made moments ago...
