Silicone wedding ring

thecuriousfox · 05/06/2020 12:29

Over the years I have put on a lot of weight and my wedding ring no longer fits me. I have not been wearing it for the past few months but I feel like something is missing. Has anyone ever had one of the silicone rings? They seem to be very popular among sportsmen and women, and also those who work manual jobs where it is risky, and I think they are gorgeous. But do they look tacky? Would it look rubbish on an overweight, middle aged mother of two who's only sport is going up and downstairs to put the DC to bed or lifting my wine glass after a shitty day?

At the minute we cannot afford to buy a new proper one so I thought this might be a good substitute, rather than a gold plated one that made my finger green and all the colour flaked off! Help me please! Confused

I think one like this would look lovely, according to the website it has a bit of shine to it.

thecuriousfox · 05/06/2020 12:34

@sleepismysuperpower1 that is really lovely thank you.

Can't you just get it resized?

I don’t think that would look great.

I’d get a silver ring.

thecuriousfox · 05/06/2020 12:40

I had it resized after my DC, and as it's quite thin they said they couldn't do it again. I must have been a very skinny bride!

I bought a cheap 9ct new wedding ring for £35 when my hands swelled up.

I think the rings in the link above look lovely btw. Sliver could also be nice but they do tarnish as well.

When I was pg I wore primark and silver rings as I didnt want my own cut off. No one really noticed. It stopped my hand feeling weird being ring free

picklemewalnuts · 05/06/2020 12:48

Silver doesn't tarnish while you wear it, only when it's sat idle.

felineflutter · 05/06/2020 12:49

Just look up degloving. They are dangerous, especially if tight. I have taken mine off too and am looking at silicone ones.

felineflutter · 05/06/2020 12:50

don't look up degloving if squeamish!!!

CornishPorsche · 05/06/2020 12:57

DH wears one for work, due to the risk of degloving (srsly, don't look that up if you're squeamish, it's awful) or losing a finger as these will split and come off if trapped rather than pull at the finger.

I think gorgeous is a stretch for a silver tinted silicone ring, but no one would notice it I'm sure! What about a plain silver band? Or something like this :www.hsamuel.co.uk/webstore/d/8430020/silver+&+9ct+yellow+gold+cubic+zirconia+trilogy+ring/

LostSapphire · 05/06/2020 13:00

I have a titanium one for £4 from eBay that I wear for work. Very comfortable, hypoallergenic and durable. If you change size, buy a new one Grin

DH lost his original in the tip. I bought him an £8 silver one from Amazon. As a PP said, silver doesn't tarnish if worn daily.

Silver is easier to cut off in an emergency than titanium FYI.

LostSapphire · 05/06/2020 13:05

Here's my titanium one. £6 now but still. Looks just like my real platinum one, just lighter in weight.

Bluntness100 · 05/06/2020 14:33

I’d just buyer a cheaper one that’s bigger and fits you. Some great suggestions on here. Silicone ones really are aimed at sports people or those with jobs which put them at risk, which doesn’t mean you can’t wear them, just you’re not in those categories so can go for something nicer.

Nsky · 05/06/2020 14:45

Buy one from eBay, much cheaper than new

Why not just get one and wear it for a bit, see if it works for you? If so, great. If not, you've got a temporary spare should you lose/need repairs to a more permanent solution.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 05/06/2020 14:50

I know people who wear silicone ones. Not sure if it’s just the ones they wear but they don’t look great.

MrsEricBana · 05/06/2020 14:56

I think it's a good idea OP but equally an inexpensive silver band would look lovely too.

GoddessofSuburbia · 05/06/2020 15:01

I wear one- mostly for health and safety reasons at work, but it’s so comfortable I tend to keep it on all the time and only change it for my ‘proper’ one if we’re doing something nice. I think whether it looks good or not is entirely down to personal taste; imo the metallic ones look better than the plain coloured bands. ‘Scuse the dinosaur hands- all the hand washing is being really rough on them- but here’s mine if you want to see what they look like on normal hands.

@WellDidYa it's just trying to market their new product, I don't think it really effects the product itself. I don't have one of the rings though, so I can't comment on quality etc

Yeah, but its a silicon ring, not the one ring

Pinkblueberry · 05/06/2020 17:07

My husband got one for work and it looked rubbish so it was better to just not wear one. If price is an issue I would just get an inexpensive piece of costume jewellery.

thecuriousfox · 05/06/2020 17:09

Thank you everyone for all your replies. I'm really liking that @GoddessofSuburbia, I think it looks well. Where did you get yours from? I'm tempted to get one as I am sometimes working outside on the family farm as well.

@LostSapphire those are also very nice and good value, so I may get one of those as well, to wear when I am out, not that I can escape very often!

Another option I guess would be to lose weight but I know that isn't going to happen anytime soon, especially at the moment Blush

We have that enzo silicone one in the first link. It is blue, not a silvery colour and it's ugly.
My lovely husband managed to lose his wedding ring 18 months after getting married and we still hadn't got around to replacing it 3 years on. We have bought 3 rings in the last month; 2 rings are silicone and 1 metal.
The two silicone ones look cheap and nasty and weren't good quality for the product (plus the customs that we had to pay and hadn't checked before hand....Hmm). The third was a titanium one from Amazon that actually was the cheapest and looks the best! 15 quid instead of the 30 odd for the silicone ones.
The other side to it is that my husband has a weird finger feom rugby which means the mid knuckle is massive compared to where the ring sits. Obviously we had to get the larger ring, but this meant that it looked odd and worse because it's far too big.

BiBabbles · 05/06/2020 17:41

I wear one, similar looking to GoddessofSuburbia - maybe a little lighter grey, and it's so much more comfortable. I love it, highly recommend and wish I'd done it sooner.

I think the plain/metallic band ones can look great and, while some with prints that might fall for some under tacky, I don't think they look rubbish for non-athletes - while heavily advertised towards the sporty, I think they're more associated with certain jobs or for people with issues with metals like skin allergies, arthritis, and finger swelling. I fall into the arthritis camp - I found over time pretty much any metal jewelry makes the nearest joints hurt til I had to stop wearing them. It was a bit sad, like you said it felt like I was missing something.

An additional bonus, as someone who talks with my hands a lot, the silicone ring while feeling a bit looser, slides around a lot less than my old metal one did.
