Kate Garraway's husband- so upsetting

Did anyone see Kate's interview. Her husband Derek is now covid free after battling it for 10 weeks but his body has been ravaged by it. It was so sad to watch as she was fighting back the tears and trying to stay brave for her girls. I was fighting back the tears too.

I watched it too. She was so brave. It's a boy and a girl she has not two girls.

ssd · 05/06/2020 11:36

I've been following this story since April. I'm so glad he is covid free. I've been so worried about him, daft as obviously I don't know them.
I hope he makes a full recovery.

Rory786 · 05/06/2020 11:37

@exclamationperfume
Sorry, and yes she is really brave

On a ventilator for 10 weeks, I would think his chances now would be virtually nil. Even if he does wake up after that long it would be a miracle if he got back to any semblance of normal. Really terrible for them all

MrsPerfect12 · 05/06/2020 11:41

I hope he makes it. Must be so hard not being able to hold a loved ones hand at a time like this never mind for 10 weeks and trying to keep it together for your kids.

oohnicevase · 05/06/2020 11:43

It is indeed heartbreaking .. does make me wonder what the aftermath is.. I've heard so many stories about brain damage and other awful side effects . I really feel for her and the kids!

ihatethecold · 05/06/2020 11:45

I watched her this morning and was very moved by her. she has shown such strength in a very difficult time. She must be exhausted. I cannot imagine what she is going through on a daily basis, he GMB colleagues were so visibly moved by her words.

SunshineCake · 05/06/2020 11:47

I watched her and cried. I just don't know how she is getting through but we just do when our family's is hurting.

Nearlyalmost50 · 05/06/2020 11:48

This is going to sound awful, but I am not sure it will be a kindness if he survives but in a hugely compromised state and isn't able to be the man he would want to be, or the husband, or the dad. I have experience of this and it's heart-breaking. The problem is that you simply don't know, and there's always the hope of full recovery, and so you continue, because what else can you do. She seems like a lovely person and their connection is obviously deep and real, and to go through that pain is, for everyone, almost more than you can bear. I hope for her sake that the future becomes clearer, whichever way it goes.

PleasantVille · 05/06/2020 11:49

I also keep thinking about the similar situation with the family who had to say their goodbyes but the husband was managing to stay alive.

It was on radio 4 news but I don't know the name of the family and haven't been able to Google anything

Does anyone know if he recovered?

Very sad

IsolatedIzzy · 05/06/2020 11:50

I cried as well! She has been so brave and they seemed to be such a happy couple & family! Absolutely heart breaking!

DomDoesWotHeWants · 05/06/2020 11:58

Hard enough to go through in private. Very brave to share it.

chalkyc2 · 05/06/2020 12:00

@pleasantville - Sue Martin - similar story I believe he's still alive but now has pneumonia - she posts on twitter occasionally

LouLouLoo · 05/06/2020 12:01

I know there are nurses and doctors on here. I have seen statements like this over the past few weeks, could somebody please explain what happens to the person and their body when it is ventilated? I can imagine that losing muscle would happen pretty rapidly but it sounds as though far more than this happens?

I thought being ventilated protected the body whilst it was recovering, but assume I have that wrong.

Thank you, I'll look her up, it must be many weeks for her family too

BobbieDraper · 05/06/2020 12:11

This is how my friend died. He was on a ventilator for half that time, but when he was cold free and taken for a scan, his lungs were destroyed. His wife was able to be with him since he wasnt infectious anymore, so she held his hand but there was no saving him.

After 10 weeks on a ventilator, recover is really unlikely. Being free if the virus is a moot point now; the damage caused by the virus plus the ventilator is still there.

samG76 · 05/06/2020 12:14

I know someone who was on a ventilator with C-19 for 10 weeks. He is being released to a rehabilitation centre, but he is conscious, speaking, and they are hopeful that he will be able to go back to work in a few months.

googlepoodle · 05/06/2020 12:18

She is incredibly strong and both her and Derek are obviously so well liked by colleagues.
I wondered about the ventilator question too - I assumed it helped to rest the body

ajandjjmum · 05/06/2020 12:20

As a family, they must be clinging on to stories like samG76. DD heard the interview and apparently her DS didn't want to go back to school until Derek is better, as he'd always taken him to school.

Everything crossed for them - and all others in a similar situation.

Shocking that if you’re put in a ventilator you have 40/50% of dying because of the Maxine it’s self.

AnyFucker · 05/06/2020 12:21

The positive pressure required by the ventilator to force oxygen into damaged lungs itself destroys the tiny airways

He is or was probably on other invasive treatments to support his systems such as dialysis and filtration which also cause essential tissue to break down

I didn't see the interview but I would imagine he has had a severe reaction to the virus and developed a haemmorhagic encephalopathy. Inflammation and swelling of the brain. There are also similar blood clotting related effects on the liver, kidneys, heart vessels etc. In many cases, this can reverse with time but 10 weeks with no resolution is very concerning

Awful

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 05/06/2020 12:22

I never watched I'm a celebrity, but I saw a picture of them being reunited on the bridge, and the look of 'Love' captured between the 2 of them, just at that moment...
I think it might have only been a few months ago

It's just heartbreaking.

I think she's an incredible person, wife and mother

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 05/06/2020 12:24

Here's another one - Broadway actor Nick Cordero - his wife was also told to say her goodbyes. He's awake now and slowly improving but his lungs are hugely damaged too. www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/05/13/855572038/broadways-nick-cordero-emerges-from-coma-during-battle-with-covid-19

derxa · 05/06/2020 12:30

I pray for the whole family. Every week I hope he's started to recover. A desperately sad situation. Flowers

mencken · 05/06/2020 12:30

the man in the latest link is 41.

I hope all those who went to crowded breaches, didn't distance at protests and don't believe the virus is real don't have it proved to them. Or maybe I do...
