Kate Garraway's husband- so upsetting

Did anyone see Kate's interview. Her husband Derek is now covid free after battling it for 10 weeks but his body has been ravaged by it. It was so sad to watch as she was fighting back the tears and trying to stay brave for her girls. I was fighting back the tears too.

I’m not sure which is more frightening. Dying or your body being so ravaged you never make a full recovery. This bloody thing is just cruel.

I don't know, but personally I would rather die than be alive in a "locked in" state. My aunt had a huge stroke and 'survived' it, but she couldn't speak, walk or live any kind of normal life. When she died, I was somewhat relieved that she was no longer suffering.

My son in laws 40 year old fit and healthy colleague had Covid, he was quite ill with it but made a recovery of sorts. He had a heart attack last week and died. Its not just what it does at the time its the lasting damage it does.

@Ipadipod - have sent you a PM with the text from the linked article. :)

I saw it, don't know who she is, yes very sad but she was on for hours!!! Perhaps they had nothing else to talk about.

Or maybe they wanted to give her space to talk without rushing her???
SunshineCake · 07/06/2020 16:48

She wasn't on for hours and even if she was, so what. I suppose you complained at the time taken to read out the name of the then 100 NHS workers who died.

derxa · 07/06/2020 16:51

ineedaholidaynow · 07/06/2020 16:51

@amispeakingenglish how callous are you?

ihatethecold · 07/06/2020 20:30

I could’ve listened to her all morning. She was amazing.
Whether you knew her or not, she is a person going through an unbelievably difficult time.
I take my hat off to her.

googlepoodle · 07/06/2020 20:36

She wasn’t on for hours! She gave a very detailed description of her husbands decline. She made me realise the importance of being alert again to see how awful the outcome can be for some people. I thought her interview was very valuable

Rory786 · 07/06/2020 22:55

@googlepoodle

I absolutely agree. A close friend passed away more than a month ago due to Covid. She was in her early 40's, a gym bunny eoth no health issues. Her death knocked md for 6.
Kate's interview brought it all back, that this virus is serious, it is not just affecting the elderly and we dont know how our bodies will react to it.

I see the nasties are back on another thread on her, saying does really being on a crowded beach make you liable to catch it,, thinking its a big deal over nothing, I would make them work a 14 hour shift in ITU wearing full PPE.People need to hear it from the horses mouth

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 08/06/2020 10:23

I do think quite a lot of people need to experience ICU and Covid patients. It would be a bit of an eye opener. I suspect people who think it’s only a risk if you are over 80 or vulnerable because they are only looking at the death rate would get a bit of a surprise at the actual make up of ICU patients.

Mightymurphy · 08/06/2020 10:25

Kate Garraway is a breakfast news presenter who has been on tv for many years. She was on her own show.

ajandjjmum · 08/06/2020 11:02

I thought the interview was very moving - and informative.

Just wish I had Dr. Hilary on speed dial for every time I had a health query.

She and her family have really been through the mill - so hope Derek comes through it, although I appreciate he has an uphill battle.

She seems like a genuinely lovely person.

MrsTannyFickler · 08/06/2020 11:56

It's awful Kantor. It's such a long drawn out ordeal for the him and his family.
I don't think many people do realose the impactnof this disease.
Lots of people spout about the chances of death being minimal and dissmissivy saying its "only old and vulnerable". Its a bit shitnif you are or love someone old or vulnerable.

It isn't just then people that find themselves ventilated in ICU that have a long road to recovery or worrying damage.
My friend in his 40s was admitted for a few weeks at end if March. He was on oxygen but not ventilated. Its now 8 weeks or so later since he came home. He needs a commode and his bed is down stairs. He is still so breathless. He used to do charity fun runs and marathons. He was superfit. Infact his lung capacity is what probably helped him the drs said. However, here he is free from Covid but unable to walk upstairs to use the bathroom. He will probably never be fully fit again.
Someone else I know has recovered from it at home but now it's just coming to light that his kidneys arent working properly and that there is also a problem with his liver.
Both these people in 40s and 50s fully fit, no known health issues prior to this.

Ipadipod · 09/06/2020 17:40

I agree it’s such an awful virus. It’s great that people are surviving but it’s not being reported on the lasting effects it’s having on some poor souls.
