Now they are going to be compulsory. I'm just wondering what to buy?

well, if the kids ever go bakc to school, that will be 3 kids on the train every morning and every everning. That is x6 per day so potentially 30 per week just for that.

For that reaosn am not going to buy disposables.

I do some sewing, and have plenty of scrap fabric, including some teenage acceptable camoflague, so I will be making them all a stack each, have a mask basket in the utility room and throw them all into the wash a couple of times a week.

I'll need some too for shops etc.
This site looks doable, has a nose wire, and easy to sew

I’ve ordered one from Seasalt

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 05/06/2020 13:24

When maskes were made compulsory here I went to the pharmacy for N95 masks to be used in 'tight' situations - they have to be cleaned and immersed in water above 90 ° regularily and I bought a couple of community masks that can go into the hot wash (>70°).

Baseline2815 · 05/06/2020 14:34

You don't need to put cloth masks in a hot wash. Cooler temps with detergent will do the trick. Just to help you save on your elecricity bill!

MyDogPatch · 05/06/2020 14:38

I have been wearing bandanas but I sometimes get them stuck in my hair after tying: I've just ordered five masks with valves from eBay.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 05/06/2020 17:56

Masks with valves don't make any sense as the valve lets your breath out...

RainMustFall · 05/06/2020 18:07

I bought minec from Amazon.

Comefromaway · 05/06/2020 18:08

I got given a box of 50 by work at the start of lockdown. My boss also donated a box to the wife of an employee who was working as a carer with no PPE.

Yellownotblue · 05/06/2020 18:08

I currently live in Asia where it’s very easy to get surgical masks, every pharmacy has them. We have a stock of many hundreds. Some of my friends buy them in thousands.

We’re moving back to London this summer. Will we attract negative comments wearing disposable surgical masks and not face coverings?

I also have reusable cotton masks, but they get really hot and sweaty after a period of time (children have to wear them all day at school). The disposable ones are much more comfortable in my opinion. But I don’t want us to look like dicks ‘stealing resources from the NHS’.

Any thoughts?

Posted this on an almost identical thread!

Places to buy face masks and a selection of price ranges here

This article has UK sources too, but it also covers US and Australia so have to scroll through to get to UK section

I have ones from Hype which are comfy and thick – they also make them for healthcare workers – come in a range of colours/patterns and machine washable. But have to practice indoors if have glasses as need to be positioned carefully to ensure they don’t steam up.
Also have ones made by a friend in different patterns, and use large scarves – had before from places like Zara – that can be pulled up over face. And old snoods – those scarves that are sewn in a circle can be pulled up and pulled tight at the other end. Can also cut off bottom section of a t shirt to make a circular, snood-type face covering. Can also buy stuff from cycling shops/outdoor shops that are designed for runners and/or cyclists that work well.

BigBreakfast · 05/06/2020 18:13

I really can't see how they can insist on "masks", so on that basis, I plan to use scarves and buffs we already have and avoid places where they are required as much as possible

Kitting a family out with any kind of actual mask is a big outlay for a family on a low income and you need more than one each as they need changing and washing frequently.

Seen a lot of people wearing them here and - from spending time in HK - think they are the same as the ones you're talking about...and nobody has commented at all. They sell them on sites like Amazon.

Yellownotblue · 05/06/2020 18:19

@YounghillKang thank you 🙏

megletthesecond · 05/06/2020 18:24

A friend who usually makes costumes. She's swapped to masks while theatres and TV productions are on hold.

I've also cobbled together a few of our own but the dc's think they're rubbish.

Bloodybridget · 05/06/2020 18:28

DP made ours out of old pillowcases.

Baseline2815 · 05/06/2020 18:30

@BigBreakfast It's not a big outlay at all. You can make them with very little skill from cheap cotton tea towels from a pound shop. You can get two masks out of one towel. DH made up a no-sewing-required mask that looks great. Just requires a little Googling and some time.

They do need frequent washing, though, so best to have a few each for all family members.

Gingernaut · 05/06/2020 18:31

I'm looking at skull print morph masks on Amazon, although the spider one sounds right up my street.

I'm fed up of people wasting medical supplies, by 'wearing' disposable PPE around their chins or below their noses.

Where I work, disposable face masks are like gold dust and every fuckwit I see wearing one incorrectly boils my piss.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 05/06/2020 19:04

Here you can get emmittance reducing community masks everywhere , like these ...

Ghostlyglow · 05/06/2020 20:21

I've ordered some cloth ones off Amazon. Super cheap for a pack of 5, so might be crap but can't bring myself to spend much.

BigBreakfast · 05/06/2020 20:23

I know that Baseline2815 but the families I work with face very many difficulties, of which poverty is only one. They really won't be making homemade masks.

Howmuchlongercanthislast · 05/06/2020 20:51

Ours are from here- for every pack they donate one
