I'm starting to miss little non essential things!

Dd asleep so doing some tidying and housework.

We are very rural and a trip to places like home bargains, pound shop would be about an hour drive, is not in our nearest town, and is not really essential at the moment.

After eleven weeks at home I was just thinking as I went round house how much I miss the little things.

I get a shop every ten days but have to share with PIL. We are not starving but it's the rubbish i miss.

Random extra cleaning products, cloths, sprays etc. Cupboard is looking a bit sad.

Cooking stuff, marshmallows, spreads, syrup, jams, little random things you don't think of till you see them.

Toys. Things like bubbles, colouring books, a bucket and spade, crayons. I can get the, in amazon but nothing beats a pound shop colouring book.

Junk food. The cupboard looks very empty. Chewy sweets, weird crisps, interesting biscuits, all gone.

Bathroom crap. Candles, tea lights, bubble bath, weird bath toys, soaps etc.

Garden, cheap seeds, plants, random animals to hide in the flower bed. Solar lights and outdoor wine glasses.

None of this is essential or matters but was just thinking and must enjoy a wander round and buying these little things more than I realised.

Anyone else have silly things they are missing?

I miss going to book shops and places like antique markets. I could go to the garden centre but not to have a proper long amble round and lunch in the cafe. Most of all I miss going out for a drink in the evenings!

eggandonion · 03/06/2020 15:04

I love a good pound shop. Or a good charity shop. Or a cafe.
I don't miss evening pubs, but I miss a sandwich and chips at lunchtime in our local place

raffle · 03/06/2020 15:06

Has you snack cupboard only just become empty?!

HMSSophie · 03/06/2020 15:07

I too like a rummage and a browse at the shops, and my own sweet time to do it in, buy you miss buying a load of, frankly, plastic tag, OP?

00100001 · 03/06/2020 15:07

Just....go to Poundland? Confused

AdoptedBumpkin · 03/06/2020 15:09

Lockdown has made me appreciate the little things more that I used to take for granted, like catch-up coffees or a browse in the library.

00100001 · 03/06/2020 15:09

I still 'browse' - and buy non-essential things.

IDGAF if I'm in the shop for 20 minutes distancing, or 35...makes little difference.

DOing a military style IN-GRAB-OUT makes it all stressful and unbearbale for me. so i go once a week....and take my time. And yes, I will wander round the clothes section in Tesco, or the homeware section in Sainsbury's and see if there are bargains to be had in B&M.... because life goes on.... literally nothing stops you buying any of the things you listed OP.

HereComesSimon · 03/06/2020 15:10

But I bet you've saved some money not buying that stuff

00100001 · 03/06/2020 15:11

However, I miss going swimming and the library.

Other than that, my friends and I go for coffee and sit in the park and chat.. same as before really. Except we're not sitting on sofas and we don't hug.

00100001 · 03/06/2020 15:13

@AdoptedBumpkin you can have catch up coffees... go to costa (or wherever) get takeaway coffee... go to suitable sitting area and chat to friend... simple.

eggandonion · 03/06/2020 15:14

I like a cafe with real cups though, and like OP I'm not in a big town so no good shops selling gnomes and reading glasses and string! I miss the swimming pool too.

EatsShootsAndRuns · 03/06/2020 15:14

Miss charity shops (donating and buying), second-hand book shops. I also miss Poundland etc (10 miles away and we're not going out yet) plus the middle aisles in Aldi and Lidl.

Pleasenodont · 03/06/2020 15:15

I’m the same. I miss coffee shop visits, the cinema, swimming, basic monotonous routine of daily life etc. Also miss McDonald’s even though we barely eat it. I miss pottering around shops, I’m 8 months pregnant so I haven’t entered a shop since a week or so before lockdown. Sucks.

Katinski · 03/06/2020 15:16

My fave 2nd hand bookshop and Mr.Chatterteeth. How I miss Mr.Chatterteeth! P'raps his teeth wouldn't have chattered so much if he'd used Polygrip or something? P'raps I could have casually put a tube of it on his bookshelves to find when he tidied up? Yep! That's a Plan, that's what I'll do,something to look forward to!
(adds false teeth fixative to my next Morries home delivery listGrin )

formerbabe · 03/06/2020 15:18

Why can't you go to those places if they're open?

Theyhaveallbeenused2 · 03/06/2020 15:18

I miss the walks around the charity shops in my town also a Costa iced coffee.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/06/2020 15:19

I miss going to the bathroom and not having to keep an ear out for the children... It's not that they need me, but they fall over, drop things, fall out, get hungry, need drinks...

IndieRo · 03/06/2020 15:22

I miss the school run routine believe it or not. Not too bothered about shops. I live in an urban area so plenty of them close by. One day just runs into another. Don't look forward to the weekend. I used to really look forward to my Fridays. I don't work on Fridays so would blitz the house after school run, get shopping delivered. Collect kids from school, uniforms would be put straight in the wash. Kids would have showers, into pj's and so would I. When DH got home we would order a take away and DH and I would have a few drinks whilst kiddies watched a movie. I need my routine back.

middleager · 03/06/2020 15:26

I go shopping once, maybe twice each week. Off to B&M later, but the last time I was there I paused to look at something, but felt pressure from others to move on, so I do feel stressed into just grabbing and going.

poozel · 03/06/2020 15:27

Sorry, not enough detail in OP. We are in Scotland, so a 40 mile trip, 80 rounded, to buy crap is not permitted.

We are on a family farm, PIL are shielding so we all are really.

As I say I don't need any of it, just was light heartedly thinking about how run down things were becoming. I usually have a fairly high stock of crap incase it snows, which I'm hoping it won't but you never know.

Costco, that's another place but that's even further.

Yes to all the other little things mentioned, a lunch out, swimming, pottering about.

Yes I probably have saved a bit, especially on fuel.

Think the only thing I've missed is McDonalds! 🙈

Purplemist · 03/06/2020 15:33

I have Aldi just around the corner and a Co-op and Tesco within easy walking distance, but I have missed M&S for food shopping.
I was so happy when they started selling chilled food boxes.

Mrsjayy · 03/06/2020 15:34

Go to £land I know you say you are an hour away. But surely these things are essential to you I know it's "rubbish" but as you say you. Are rural but just go make an afternoon of it.

poozel · 03/06/2020 15:37

Oh yes m and s food, and a book shop.

dancinginthemoonlight77 · 03/06/2020 15:44

I too miss going to home bargains. I can't go because I struggle to carry heavy things (and by now there will be a lot I want to buy) but can't justify going with my partner and my baby. It sucks and the worst part is there's no time when we will be able to go shopping as a three again!
