Baby fell out of my arms into cot

About an hour ago my 3 month old was starting to fall asleep on me, so I went to move her to her cot. I have no idea how it happened, but as I was lowering her she rolled out of my arms and landed face down. She fell maybe 30cm at most. She screamed for a minute and has been fine ever since. In fact, she was grumpy all morning but has not stopped smiling and cooing since the incident, even as I've sat cuddling her in tears!

I feel absolutely sick about it, but as she has been fine, didn't fall far and landed on a soft surface it didn't cross my mind to call the doctor or 111. But DH has just said I probably should. She is due her next feed soon so I'll see how she takes it. If she doesnt drain it like she usually does then I will call someone just to check her over. Does that sound reasonable or should I ring someone anyway?

Listen to your gut.

FWIW, 30cm onto a soft surface doesn’t sound drastic and presumably you’ve given her a good check over?

We’ve all done something similar at some point, if we’ve had children long enough. Flowers

GreyishDays · 02/06/2020 13:10

She’ll fall off the sofa and probably the bed before you’re done. Grin

30cm onto a soft surface is really fine.

TeddyBeans · 02/06/2020 13:10

Absolutely nothing to worry about. If she'd fallen from the bed onto the floor then maybe but onto a mattress isn't going to damage her. She might have been shocked hence the initial cry but if she's been fine since I wouldn't worry

A fall from their height or less with crying lasting less than 10 minutes is usually fine. (That’s how they don’t seriously injure themselves learning to walk.)

JoMarches · 02/06/2020 13:12

Personally, if she seemed happy and was taking her feeds etc I’d be happy enough.
If you feel unsure later you could always seek advice, there isn’t a ‘time frame’, and they won’t mind.
For what it is worth, if dropped, tipped over, knocked over and damn near squished every one of my bambino’s.
Some are giant hairy men now!! It happens and it’s ok to feel shite and terrified after. Luckily it doesn’t make you a bad mum. A bad mum wouldn’t care.

Lavenderpurple · 02/06/2020 13:15

I think she will be fine. She will trip, fall, tumble, bash and bump herself a few more times yet. I feel like toddler dd is always crying because she’s hurt herself.

Billyjoearmstrong · 02/06/2020 13:15

If that was one of mine, I wouldn’t worry. Especially if she is happy and feeding well. She will be fine falling into a flat surface.

I dropped Ds into the cot when he was in SCBU Blush the nurse standing next to me laughed and said so many parents do that it’s fine. I was in tears of course!

IncrediblySadToo · 02/06/2020 13:19

In fact, she was grumpy all morning but has not stopped smiling and cooing since the incident

Does she look like she needs a Dr? Nope.
30cm into her cot is nothing. Give it a few months and she fave face planted off the sofa/bed/changing table.

Fortunately they tougher than they look!

SandieCheeks · 02/06/2020 13:22

No baby ever fractured anything by falling 30cm onto a mattress!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/06/2020 13:28

Fortunately they're tougher than they look.
This.

My sister fell out her pram down a flight of concrete steps at 4 months old.
I'll never forget it. I was traumatized.
She was fine though. She just slept through the whole thing. She obviously hadn't been strapped in securely enough.

ComDummings · 02/06/2020 13:29

She will be fine, they’re bouncy!

BogRollBOGOF · 02/06/2020 13:39

I dropped mine into the crib head first in the hospital. My strength in my post-EMCS, 40 hr laboured, SPD ridden, malfunctioning organs-recently-moved-out-of-HDU body gave out as my strength was insufficient to lean to the crib or get out of the bed. Ward far too understaffed for any help.

9.5 years later, he's grand. Plenty of other drops, trips anf falls since then too Grin

I wouldn't worry hun...she probably cried due to the shock of what happened...I can't remember how many months old my little boy was but he rolled off the bed and onto our floor which thank god is carpeted and he cried due to the shock...I honestly felt terrible ...he was fine luckily xxx

As someone who cheerfully threw myself out of standing mum's arms onto the kitchen concrete floor when I was little, she'll be fine.

copycopypaste · 02/06/2020 14:38

The first time my dd rolled over, it was off the sofa into a rug. I was distraught. She was fine.

Hillbillyhotel · 02/06/2020 14:40

My DH done the same with DS1. I was livid but in reality, DS was fine, he was just my PFB and I was a hormonal hurricane Blush

MummyGoingItAlone · 02/06/2020 14:46

Don’t worry. We all do it. I fell up the stairs with my newborn and kind of threw him away from me so I didn’t squash him!

He’s fallen off the bed twice as a baby too. He’s now almost 2 and forever with scuffs, bruises etc. Yesterday he bust his nose all over my white bedding 😳

Bugslydoo · 02/06/2020 15:00

I bumped my dd’s head putting her back into her incubator when she was born 😳 told the nurses and they said don’t worry-I’m not the first parent to do that!
Also did exactly the same with my ds 🙄 the look dh gave me 😆

BoomyBooms · 02/06/2020 15:44

I'm so clumsy, I quite frequently knock my 3 month olds foot or elbow against doorways as I'm pacing the house trying to get her to sleep! And I've accidentally scratched her with my nails no matter how short I cut them. Poor little thing doesn't even notice, let alone cry. Starting to think they're quote robust actually (helpful in my case).

borntohula · 02/06/2020 15:52

DD fell from a sofa onto the floor at around that age, I was hysterical even though she cried a bit then seemed absolutely fine. Took her to a&e. She was indeed absolutely fine.

Keep an eye on her, if anything changes, seek medical advice but I can't see that you would need to.

Hagisonthehill · 02/06/2020 15:59

My DD managed to get her legs under her and launch herself from s pram onto a concrete floor. She seemed fine and I cried more than she did.
I didn't tell my now ex for a few years!

Twospaniels · 02/06/2020 16:04

My prem baby at about 3 mths fell down the side of the bed, between the gap between the bed and the wall narrowly missing a sticky lut plug socket. She was fine and your little baby will be too I am sure.

Sevencatsandcounting · 02/06/2020 16:36

My daughter also rolled off the sofa and onto a rug around 5 months old. I was distraught. I called every doctor I could, sent messages to anyone who I thought might help and debated whether to go to A&E.

If only I had known that she would turn into a one year old who attempts to put her life in peril every 30mins and falls with alarming frequency.

I'm sure your little one will be fine! This motherhood can be scary sometimes.

SabrinaTheTeenageBitch · 02/06/2020 21:26

Mine rolled off the sofa onto a hardwood floor BlushI was hysterical. Honestly you don't need to worry, she will be absolutely fine. Welcome to years of this kind of worrying Grin
