Toy storage, argh

Goostacean · 31/05/2020 08:42

Please help! We need good storage for our children’s toys... we’ve got a toy box but everything ends up in a big pile in it, would be great to have something a bit more separated out so we can store the trains/cars/VTEC separately, for example.

What storage solution do you love?

@m0therofdragons

GLTC is just Ikea style for 4x the price Blush
Agreed. It really shows what a bargain Ikea is. Shock
ScarfLadysBag · 31/05/2020 09:19

I love Ikea (our house is a shrine to it) but the GLTC stuff is a lot thicker and sturdier IMO so I prefer that for the kid stuff as it takes more of a beating! But Kallax also a good option, I just don't like it overly visually!

UnderTheBus · 31/05/2020 09:20

We have a Kallax in the living room and a Trofast in the kids bedroom. Also some "really useful" boxes for things like playdoh which I dont want to be easily accessible and for under the bed.

Another vote for kallax.

Cliffdonville · 31/05/2020 09:24

We have Kallax here as well, one massive one and 2 smaller ones. They are great!

CanICelebrate · 31/05/2020 09:25

We have a mixture of kallax and trofast 😀

HappyPunky · 31/05/2020 09:26

DD has a thing that's plastic boxes on a frame. They tip forward so the toys are visible.

Goostacean · 31/05/2020 09:26

Hmm Trofast feels a bit like primary school, when everyone had a named drawer...? No offence to those who have it! Maybe Kallax. It’s an absolute bargain, I must admit...

This but DD's has plastic boxes in brighter colours.

geeraf · 31/05/2020 09:28

You really can't go wrong with it. Get a plain set and coloured boxes. Change the boxes when you want to change the room up a bit. Argos do a very similar range but be careful of what size you get, they do one that is slightly smaller so the Kallax cubes don't fit...

MrsTravers · 31/05/2020 09:31

Another vote for kallax but buy some rigid see through boxes rather than fabric boxes from elsewhere. We used to have the fabric boxes which are fine for older DC but little ones can't see what's in them, so they ended up all over the floor. If see through, they can get what they need so much more easily.

CanICelebrate · 31/05/2020 09:34

Trofast is a bit ‘primary school’ @Goostacean and in their playroom it was perfect for just that reason! I even labelled boxes when they were really little!
Kallax looks better so we have that in their bedrooms. I now have no toys in my living room 😀 but when I did kallax looked a lot smarter than trofast.

Dinosauraddict · 31/05/2020 09:36

My DS has a floor to ceiling built in you cupboard, my DH built him shelves within it and then we have a load of these storage boxes. They're really good quality with different animal patterns (we also have a matching laundry basket in the nursery too): 3 Sprouts Cube Storage Box - Organiser Container for Kids & Toddlers https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00PHWO5YS/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_ZW20EbEPM0SRX

ladykuga · 31/05/2020 09:45

I'm going to go against the grain and recommend the Ikea Hol Acacia storage table. It's a good width/length and stores loads of toys, boxed games Etc.

But that will lead to the same problem the OP has now. Like the toy box everything ends up in a big pile and difficult to find.
ladykuga · 31/05/2020 09:50

@GrimmsFairytales yes I just realised. 😂 OP please ignore me. In my defence I use the Kallax range to store DD's books.

delilabell · 31/05/2020 09:55

@Goostacean you're a toy storage snob! Grin
We have kallax with cath kidston-esque boxes. Then on top of it too long flat plastic boxes that are see through for the playdoh and kinetic sand.
Mine are also labelled with photos bevause I'm fed up of things being put in the wrong boxes Grin jigsaw as and games go in the sideboard and felt pens etc are kept in kilner jars on the small desk. These are in the dining /playroom

hermionegrange · 31/05/2020 09:59

We were after Kalax but waiting time was long during lockdown down so we ordered this from Argos www.argos.co.uk/product/6007320

I'm surprised how much it holds and was £40

I had a bad experience in IKEA when I accidentally went on the Sunday off bank holiday weekend... I still get flashbacks 😂

However, I bow to the superior knowledge of Mumsnet (that’s why I asked, after all!) and will measure the space properly later...

Well fair enough 😂 that’s enough to traumatise anyone. But Ikea in general is brilliant, from big furniture to photo frames and tableware and everything in between.
Whatsnewpussyhat · 31/05/2020 10:16

Kallax all the way.
I hate seeing the tat toys. The open units still look cluttered and messy to me.

Great for toddler as she knows where her stuff is and easy for her to help tiny up.

I have a trofast too which is better for things like lego.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 31/05/2020 10:22

Before you buy, measure the size of the toys you want to store... We chose trofast because it came with bigger and smaller drawers for toddlers

But kallax is definitely prettier and less institutional. We have one in our bar, and would love another as a Lego display unit.

Figmentofimagination · 31/05/2020 11:21

We recently bought the Argos version of kallax called squares plus.

www.argos.co.uk/product/6217945

You can buy the boxes that come with it from Argos. Or find them cheaper like I did from home bargains.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 31/05/2020 12:51

The argos/homebase version is pretty much identical to the kallax. I have some of the homebase fabric cubes with metal handles in one of my kallax units. They are slightly more expensive than drona but look a bit more grown up in the living room. They also fit better.
