A thread for people who enjoy savoury snacks over sweet treats

I just had a whole mozzarella topped with chopped baby tomatoes, a little garlic oil, balsamic glaze, some fresh basil and some black pepper. I ate it out of a bowl with a spoon like normal people might eat icecream.

Other Saturday night highlights from previous weeks include toasted red onion and goats cheese sandwiches, tinned Anchovies and olives and Pate on salted biscuits with a fig chutney.

Give me some savoury inspiration for next Saturday

This thread is making me salivate.

I've grilled some Lebanese breads (I'm in ME so can get easily, but pita breads I'm sure would be a fabulous alternative) with olive oil and use them as 'crackers' for EVERYTHING. Soup, cheese, turkey slices, Dahl with a dollop of hummus on it, everything.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 31/05/2020 16:30

I have nothing to add - well, bruschetta perhaps - but I learned a new word:
peanut curleys is the English word for Erdnussflips (which are highly addictive and have been my downfall since I was about four).

Breathmiller · 31/05/2020 17:09

Mmmm. Loads of these sound delicious
I am enjoying salted crackers or sometimes oatcakes with a dod of pesto, cream cheese and tapenade on (I have vegan versions) with or without a part baked tomato on top.

@pastabest, where did you buy your fig chutney from? That sounds right up my street.

foxessocks · 31/05/2020 18:00

Smoked salmon and prawn cocktail with lemon squeezed over and a side of bread and butter
Any salami, chorizo, ham type thing with crusty bread and some sort of chutney
Port salut cheese with crusty bread
Ceasar salad with croutons, in fact, any salad with croutons!
Mozerella, pesto and sun-dried tomato toastie
Cheesey nachos

I'm very hungry now! This is my favourite kind of food !

foxessocks · 31/05/2020 18:01

I forgot a Ploughman's lunch Grin

foxessocks · 31/05/2020 18:02

This is a dangerous thread as my online Asda order is still open to amendments, granted it's not Waitrose but just in case any good suggestions from Asda Grin

Roasted peppers, left over roast chicken (I prefer the drumsticks), with whatever other pickled things we have. Olives, gherkins, cornichons, pickled onions, etc.

I have been known to eat a whole jar of pickled cockles or a few roll mops. I do like my vinegar! I also love prawns.

I like the packs of meat and cheese from the supermarket, things like salami, pepperoni and provolone. I just roll them up.

Wafer thin ham or chicken, and a little bit of cream cheese or some coleslaw, roll it up. I've been know to spread it with dairylea too!

Crispy bacon slices dipped in ranch dip. Cheese oatcakes covered in hummus or taramasalata. Mini popadoms dipped in lime pickle, mango chutney and raita. I love dips and condiments.

Instant gravy with toast dippers or with strips of Yorkshire pudding dipped in. Sometimes I cut the broccoli stems up small and use those and asparagus as dippers.

Dippy eggs. Scotch eggs. Sausage rolls. That pork roll with egg in the middle.

Sometimes I order chips with salt and vinegar from the chippy once the kids are in bed and just eat chips. I don't buy chips because home chips are crap. But I do love them from the chippy.

Nachos. Nuff said.

Beef jerky. Salted pistachios. Salt and pepper cashews. Roasted chickpeas. Etc.

Peanut butter. On toast maybe. But often not.

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/05/2020 18:08

Asda usually do their tapas on 3 for £5.
Not sure if they still do it but they used to have an amazing chorizo in balsamic.
Im currently shopping wirh Sainsbury's as I get priority wirh them so any reccomendations from them appreciated.
Oh, a general one, Ryvita thins with sea salt and rosemary are addictive.

Why did I click on this thread whilst dieting? Confused

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/05/2020 18:10

How could I forget Mrs elswood Haimisha pickles, best pickles ever.

BlueWave · 31/05/2020 18:13

I also love cornichons and the red bell peppers filled with the white cheese

Grilled artichokes
Grilled peppers
Onion and garlic dip
Camembert in the oven and then dipping things in the middle (have banned myself from buying it as I just eat the whole wheel GrinBlush)

There are these wanky crisps I've only ever seen in Waitrose - called Manomasa Manchego and green olive. Thankfully I've only ever seen them once as I think I would be 2 stone heavier

iklboo · 31/05/2020 18:13

I totally agree. Savoury over sweet every time.

ladymalfoy · 31/05/2020 18:17

Feta baked with chilli oil.

ClientQ · 31/05/2020 18:19

Two recommendations
This with pitta bread https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/jan/02/whipped-feta-and-sumac-dip-recipe

And the attached photo with sabra hummus. I can't buy them as I eat half a bag in one go. Sainsburys sell them

Not a snack, but I once made a brie and bacin soup with a puff pastry lid.
I swear I had multiple orgasms whilst eating it.

PintOfGin · 31/05/2020 18:45

My favourite guilty savoury snacks include:
Brie or camembert with French bread
packet of salami and/or parma ham
Onion humous with pitta bread or pitta/lentil crisps
Blue cheese and crackers
Goats cheese and onion chutney in a panini / on toast with rocket salad
Warm posh sausage rolls
Bombay mix
Cofresh chilli and lemon crisps
Cheese and pineapple sticks
Pork scratchings Blush
Peperami Blush

I’ve actually just shed a tear over the deliciousness you’ve all been sharing! Also just added another £6 onto my food shop (already £££ with birthday cakes and at home party bits).

I actually really like salted popcorn to snack on on the evenings, but I’ve been known to eat a jar of gherkins too.

3LittleMonkeyz · 31/05/2020 18:54

@BlueWave

I love all their flavours! They are some of the best crisps I have ever eaten! I never pass a pack without buying them. If there's more than one flavour I buy one of every flavour 🙈

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/05/2020 19:01

Omg, cofresh lemon and chilli grills are lush.

Unprecedentedusername · 31/05/2020 19:02

I’ve just added taramasalata and pittas to my Ocado order. Might pop back for some olives. I’m working from home and have developed a really bad lockdown habit of crisps mid afternoon. Really shabby ones like wotsits, pickled onion monster munch and bacon wheat crunchies.

Omg this thread is everything I live for.
I could eat Greek salad by the bucket. Bread and olive oil with balsamic vinegar is my favourite thing ever. I’ll eat any cheese. I’m desperately craving pate being pregnant (I’m pretty chilled about the food rules but so far haven’t caved with pate due to the listeria risk and vitamin A double whammy).

I was once given a jar of homemade Kashmiri chutney. I ate it with cheese until it was no more. I still fantasise about it. I’m not in contact with the person who made it anymore and have no idea if it’s an authentic recipe so would have no idea how to replicate it. It makes me very sad.

There was also a man making the most amazing omelettes at the hotel I stayed at in Mexico a couple of years ago. You got a little bowl, picked your fillings, and he made a beautifully thin omelette on a hot plate with a big gooey, cheesy pile of yumminess in the middle. I am also incredibly sad that I can’t replicate that.

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/05/2020 19:17

There's a veggie pate in a tin that's fairly close to the real thing and totally safe.
Or fish/mushroom pates are safe toi I believe, its just the meat ones that aren't.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 31/05/2020 19:38

Jeez, this stuff is right up my street. Just had asparagus wrapped in streaky bacon on bbq with new potatoes dipped in Canadian mojo sauce.
