Vanity sizing for children

Vanity sizing in ladies clothes is, (I think), widely acknowledged as a real thing. A size 12 is now bigger than a size 12 was 10-20 yrs ago.
I've recently noticed it's a "thing" in kids clothing too - being taller is a "good thing".
My DS is 7, and while he is tall he is not "exceptionally" tall. I measure him every Christmas & last Dec he was 135cm which puts him on 50-75th centile but nothing that would make you do a double take if you saw him. Also he is not overweight, I weigh him at the same time too.
He needed new t shirts recently & the t shirts sized 138cm (I think it's reasonable to assume he has grown a couple of cm since Dec) were for AGED 10
Is it just me or is this crazy? A normal 7 yr old wearing 10 yr old clothing

Erm no- 135 for 7yo is v tall. My 11yo is 139!

GrimmsFairytales · 30/05/2020 11:15

I agree with Haba 135cm is very tall for a 7 yo.

InDubiousBattle · 30/05/2020 11:21

135cm is really tall for a 7 year old. My 6.5 year old has always been on the higher centiles for height and fits in age 6-7 clothes fine, I bought him an age 10 hoodie by mistake and it swamped him. Different brands have a better or worse fits but they are all about right.

Average height for a 7 year old is only around 122cm

Maybe I got my measurements wrong then....but he's followed the same centile since toddlerhood really. He's not the tallest in his class - in the taller 4 or 5 children probably (he is one of the youngest though). Perhaps I'll measure him again this evening Smile

Actually I can't have measured him THAT wrong because the T-shirt for 138cm fitted him (with a bit of growing room but doesn't swamp him)

DD is 8 and only 130 cms, and she's pretty average in her class.

Paddingtonthebear · 30/05/2020 11:48

My year 2 7yr 7 month old is 124cm and very average looking height and weight amongst her peers. 135cm is tall. Just as an example this Next sizing chart would put that in age 9yrs+ category

A 7 yo boy at 135 cm would be in the 99th centile.

haba · 30/05/2020 11:49

Sorry- I realise my post was v abrupt! I'm working Blush

Enjoy your lovely tall DS! Children come in all shapes and sizes, and it really doesn't matter what the label says, just get what fits says the woman who may just have wept about her 10yo still being in aged 7 school trousers. Smile

If it makes you feel better, sizes between different stores are all different anyway. DS is 11, now in age 8 school trousers but needs aged 12-14 tops Confused He is a human boy not a gorilla, honestly!

Pelleas · 30/05/2020 11:51

I'm probably missing something but how is this 'vanity' sizing? Vanity sizing usually means clothes in the nominally smaller size getting larger - what you are describing (7 year old size being too small for your 7 year old) is the opposite, isn't it?

Yellowcar2 · 30/05/2020 11:54

My just turned 7yo is 130cm and is tallest in his yr2 class.

Sunny4876 · 30/05/2020 11:57

My just about to turn 8 year old is 136 cm and she's in aged 12-13 clothes

haba · 30/05/2020 11:59

pelleas I expected something about "husky" sizing too.

ChipotleBlessing · 30/05/2020 11:59

He’s wearing the appropriate size for his height? And I’m not sure vanity sizing is a thing when it comes to height?!

SansaClegane · 30/05/2020 12:12

I always go by height rather than 'age' - prefer the European sizing like H&M use. My 6yo is very tall at 128cm, so he wears 8-9. If your 7yo really is 135cm that would also make him very tall and definitely not 50th -75th centile!
Anyway I ignore the age labels and just buy by height as that's more accurate.
Don't get me started on 'husky' sizes though, I think that's really sad that manufacturers are catering more and more for obese children - even normal cut clothes tend to be baggy on my average-weight children.

mamapants · 30/05/2020 12:14

This doesn't make sense for vanity sizing.
And 135cm is very tall for a 7 year old.

mamapants · 30/05/2020 12:15

What's husky sizing?

PaperMonster · 30/05/2020 12:17

Not even sure vanity sizing for adults exists! I’m a size 12 now and my size 12s from 20 years ago still fit!

sahbear · 30/05/2020 12:23

My 11 year old wears age 5-6 or 7-8 clothes, but he likes everything tight and he's small - smallest in class. For some children sizing by age is pretty irrelevant.

Alpines · 30/05/2020 12:25

You've either got your measurement wrong your centiles wrong. That's nothing like average for his age.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/05/2020 12:26

@mamapants

What's husky sizing?
For fat kids.
DominaShantotto · 30/05/2020 12:29

My 8 year old is in age 10 clothes. They don't actually fit well around the waist - but she is absolutely all legs (gets it from her 6 foot 7 dad) and otherwise trousers look ridiculous. If it wasn't for the need for leg length she wouldn't need to be sized up like that really. She's 133cm tall (I know because she's desperate to not need to use a booster seat so bugs us to measure her constantly) - but nowhere near the tallest in her class - it's the fact her height is all leg that means she has to go into the clothes sizes up. She was long legged when she was born - even in NICU as she was premature the staff remarked on how long limbed she was.

She sure as fuck doesn't get it from my short stumpy little legs!

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 30/05/2020 12:30

I'm not so sure about height vs age but my DC have all had long legs so I find clothes for older/taller children are usually too big at the waist and shoulders.

I think there probably is an element of vanity sizing as overweight younger children are often taller and need generous sizing. Children who are tall, but not overweight are becoming harder to buy for

ChaoticCatling · 30/05/2020 12:33

DS was 138cm at 10 and I think that was close to the 50th centile. I think average for 7 is 122cm so 135cm is tall.
