Vanity sizing for children

Vanity sizing in ladies clothes is, (I think), widely acknowledged as a real thing. A size 12 is now bigger than a size 12 was 10-20 yrs ago.
I've recently noticed it's a "thing" in kids clothing too - being taller is a "good thing".
My DS is 7, and while he is tall he is not "exceptionally" tall. I measure him every Christmas & last Dec he was 135cm which puts him on 50-75th centile but nothing that would make you do a double take if you saw him. Also he is not overweight, I weigh him at the same time too.
He needed new t shirts recently & the t shirts sized 138cm (I think it's reasonable to assume he has grown a couple of cm since Dec) were for AGED 10
Is it just me or is this crazy? A normal 7 yr old wearing 10 yr old clothing

My DC wear their clothes until they don't fit - but the actual labels show a massive range.
My 9 year old has some age 3 shorts, and some age 11 trousers, and various sizes in between.

My 13 year old has some women's clothes, mostly is in age 11-12, but still has an age 7 dress that she refuses to give up - it's a bit short, but still basically fits ok.

I think sizing is just really variable and depends on the style.

@SporadicNamechange brilliant thank you! I'll take look. She likes to be comfy rather than having to constantly pull her top down!

DelurkingAJ · 30/05/2020 20:05

Oh the waist vs leg length is a massive pain here. DS1 (7, 91st for height, 75th for weight) can get into DS2’s trousers (age 3-4) but needs age 9 for the leg length. And I know we’re far from alone. Hurray for Asda slim fit polo shirts for school.

My 6 year old DD (almost 7) is 138cm. She wears age 11 from most shops.

Tfoot75 · 30/05/2020 20:34

I have an almost 7yo who's around 127cm, she's one of the tallest despite young for year and I think 98th centile. She is just going into 8-9, I don't think that's strange, just means that at just 7 she's the height of an average 8-9 year old, but the centile told me that didn't it! There's quite a variety of heights in her class, one girl is a similar height to my 4yo. Majority probably between 115cm and 130cm so sitting quite nicely around the average if it's 122cm.

SuperEkstra · 30/05/2020 20:48

My DD is 7.5y and exactly 135 - she's hugely tall - always been the tallest in her class.

Ilovesausages · 30/05/2020 21:50

I measured my 8 yr DD (will be 9 in August) yesterday and she is 142 cm. Reading the comments here I realise that’s quite tall!

12 yr old DS is 5 7 so they are both tall.

Mollythepoodle · 30/05/2020 22:21

Clothes are a nightmare for my Dd12 she is 142 cm and skinny. If leggings fit on the waist and are snug fitting, the legs are too short. The right leg length hangs off of her. Shops vary hugely and I can never buy according to the size on the label.

squishee · 31/05/2020 08:58

Was husky meant to read chunky?

londongirl12 · 31/05/2020 09:10

I've given up worrying about sizing. It's so different in every shop. My 2.5yo DS can still fit in his 18-24 month T-shirt's from Asda but is in 3yo PJs from H&M. I just look at the clothes and judge.
Same with women's clothes. A size 12 in one shop is very different to a size 12 somewhere else

mistermagpie · 31/05/2020 11:42

I don't worry about it either. My 4 (nearly 5) year old is tall and skinny like me so needs the length of 5-6 but the trousers just fall down. My 3 year old is short and chunky like his dad and is still in 18-24 months in trousers!

Look at how many different shapes of women are a size ten, it's the same thing. As long as the clothes fit who cares what the label says.

hauntedvagina · 31/05/2020 11:54

My DS8 is 135cm exactly, I know this because we measured him to see if he could stop using his high backed booster.

Within his class he is one of the tallest, but certainly not the tallest. I always assumed he was fairly average!

Brunelofbrio · 31/05/2020 12:14

Just had return a whole lot of clothes to m&s. Even on the smallest setting of the adjustable waistband the trousers just fell down. We’ve had to go with European brands like H&M just to get things that stay up. Some UK clothes are definitely being size for overweight kids (m&s and TU)

BogRollBOGOF · 31/05/2020 12:43

Fortunately my 9 yo only wears shorts so I can buy age 6 for his waist and don't have waist: leg ratio issues. His shorts are retired when they are worn through or bordering on boxing short length. The other issue that is emerging is he has muscular thighs that are proportionately bigger than his tiny waist (I'm a pear shape and DH is similarly built) so we can find shorts hanging off the waist but snug on his thighs. The Next 18-24 month shorts had to be removed when DS1 was about 7 in the interests of public decency. They didn't fit until he was 3 or 4.

DS2 (7)wears trousers. Generally a couple of inches above the ankle, so that we can just about keep the drawstrings yoinked in so that they're not permanently drooping to his ankles. He's an age 4 for waist but age 6-7 on length, but it's impossible to find trousers that are long and slim enough for him.

T-shirts are less problematic as they can't fall off, but to cover the length of their body towards their hips, it means that shoulders are towards their elbows.

My children never look neat because their clothes are either too short or drooping off.
The skinnier cut of girls' clothes has suited them better when they've had items from girls' ranges.

Enchantmentz · 31/05/2020 13:06

I never thought that children's clothes were vanity sized, just badly done but also children grow in all different directions at different times imo. My dd 10 is average height but very slim and leggy. Trousers/jeans or shorts need to be a year or so younger than her age and pulled in at the waist. Dresses are the same, underwear like vests and pants are a few years younger age range than her.

Last year I bought a boys age 5 top for her that fitted. Safe to say we don't enjoy clothes shopping. There is always clothes we buy that are stored in the wardrobe for the next year in hope that they will finally fit.

SporadicNamechange · 31/05/2020 16:59

As long as the clothes fit who cares what the label says.

It matters particularly at the moment because you can only buy clothes online. So it would be nice if the clothes were anything like the size they claim to be - especially when you’ve checked the size guide and what arrives is actually cut for a waist 4” bigger but the legs of someone 3” shorter.

It’s the same women’s clothes. Frankly, it’s just not a size 8 if I can get the waistband around my enormous bump at 33 weeks pregnant (looking at you Sainsbury’s).
