Can you just “fall asleep?”

Soubriquet · 29/05/2020 19:07

My dh can.

One minute we can be watching a film and the next he’s out

I can’t. No matter how tired I am, I can’t just fall asleep.

I have to get comfy, shuffle about, toss and turn about 50 times and then start to pretend to dream.

I am a champion sleeper.

But I can't tolerate anyone sleeping in front of the TV. Banned in our house.

howlatthetrees · 29/05/2020 19:36

Nope but DH can

BumpkinSpiceBatty · 29/05/2020 19:38

Nope. I've recently invested in a sleep mask with a Bluetooth speaker in it. I have been listening to bedtime stories for adults to go to sleep the past month

monkeyonthetable · 29/05/2020 19:39

Yes. Lights off and I'm asleep, normally. I get really bad insomnia sometimes but most of the time I fall asleep really easily.

.......
I've never heard of that! I'll look into it.

Does it work?

iklboo · 29/05/2020 19:41

DH does. Literally like someone has hit the off switch. Me? I'm awake for ages.

JJJJJ00000 · 29/05/2020 19:41

My OH can, as soon as he lays down he's out like a light. For me it's several position changes, covers on and off a handful of times and a deal with the devil 😂
Even then I struggle to stay asleep.

MuthaClucker · 29/05/2020 19:46

I don't know what the secret is 🤷‍♀️ I guess I'm just really good at sleeping!

I don't generally stay up late, I'm often in bed relaxing and winding down with my iPad a book by 9pm Blush. One thing I never do though, unlike my husband, is nap. Not during the day, or in front of the telly. Drives me mad when DH does it, I have no idea why!

It's great, really comfortable and completely black out. It was about £20 on Amazon.
dudsville · 29/05/2020 20:03

No. No I fecking can't. I have a room that is just for sleeping, black out blinds, sea sounds, sleeping tablets, no blue light, gentle ease in, relaxing bath, and i get 4 hours.

Starshollowwannabe · 29/05/2020 20:07

I bloody love sleep. Can easily fall asleep in 2 minutes but I have to be lying down

InFiveMins · 29/05/2020 20:08

I struggle to do this but would love to.

The only exception is watching TV in bed (on the laptop as don't have a TV in the bedroom unfortunately), I fall to sleep within 5-10 minutes then!

Rarely drift off on the sofa, unfortunately.

EstherEliza · 29/05/2020 20:10

Yes I can. Takes about five minutes. I get comfortable and tap a rythym either on my legs or the bed. After a short while my mind clears of whatever I've been thinking about and I end up focusing on the rhythm. Within minutes I fall asleep. It's been a real game changer. Sounds nuts but it works. I used to do headspace but this is better. And cheaper.

Lynda07 · 29/05/2020 20:14

Thank you, Bumpkin. What sort of stories do they tell/read?

EstherEliza · 29/05/2020 20:15

How to trick your brain into falling asleep: Jim Donovan. It's on YouTube. I came across it by accident, didn't believe it would work but tried it anyway. And it did work. It's bloomin brilliant.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 29/05/2020 20:16

Awful when we were travelling at night (which my parents preferred as it meant we had a full day there the next day).

I had this once on a flight home. We were even lucky enough to be in 1st class, so had a lie flat seat and bedding, a fresh pair of PJs etc, popped my ear plugs in and lay there tossing and turning for about 6 hours Grin. Gave up in the end and just watched movies and drank tea. That ‘day’ I was awake for 36 hours straight, then slept for 16 hours and was right as rain 😂

I’m usually asleep within 20 mins if I’ve had a relaxing bedtime. When DP stays over I wear earplugs to drown out his snoring and sleep fine (we have separate beds, so no movement. No noise!). However if anyone so much as nudges my bed I will startle awake and be unable to go back to sleep. His leg touched my mattress the other night and I leapt up, took out my earplugs and checked he was ok (bad dream) then spent the next 3 hours with a racing heart unable to sleep. Grrr!!

I must sleep very lightly I think.

I do occasionally fall asleep on the sofa, usually about midnight, then wake at 2am and can’t get back to sleep.

turtletum · 29/05/2020 20:17

Yes I can, much to the annoyance of my OH. I have always been a good sleeper, can happily sleep on a plane. I think it's how my brain is wired. I compartmentalise everything, so when I get home from work, I don't often think about work, etc. It means when I go to bed, my brain only focuses on sleeping. In the past when I was suffering from anxiety and depression, I did get insomnia. It was horrible.

grafittiartist · 29/05/2020 20:17

Yep.
Head Pillow Snooze.
Bliss

AuntieMarys · 29/05/2020 20:18

Dh can. Literally within seconds. I hate him sometimes

MrsBobDylan · 29/05/2020 20:19

I am so very, very good at falling asleep. It is almost like having a superpower (albeit not very useful).

I think I was just born that way (my mother said she used to wake me in the mornings from 3 months old and that if she left me on a play mat, I'd nod off within seconds).

I always nod off if I am very stressed, not so great in a work environment 😂

FraughtwithGin · 29/05/2020 20:23

Yes. My siblings and I can fall asleep anywhere (if tired).
We ascribe it to the fact that our parents never tiptoed around when we were babies and that we all had our own nurseries from the start - so we weren't disturbed by parents snoring, for example.

Charles11 · 29/05/2020 20:24

I never could but these days, if I have a blanket then I’ll just fall asleep. It’s like magic.

Asuitablecat · 29/05/2020 20:25

I couldn't before I had kids, then I.spent 10years permanently exhausted. Up at 6, bed at 11 and bam! Out.

Bluntness100 · 29/05/2020 20:28

No, my husband literally gets into bed, puts his head on the pillow and he’s asleep seconds later. I just can’t understand how he does it. It’s totally alien to me. He can also lay in till About ten. Where as if I’m awake I’m up. Even if it’s 5. 30 am.

I think though he doesn’t go to bed till he’s properly tired and he is just kinda lazy so lays there dozing in the morning. Suspect I go too early to bed.

Rockbird · 29/05/2020 20:31

I can. Lie down, audio book on, spark out. I do wake up quite a lot in the night though.
