What sort of compensation should I get?

BlueEggsAndSpam · 29/05/2020 12:45

I bought a rust coloured cotton jumpsuit recently from a mid range high street retailer (£40); on the second wash (first was on its own) it has left half the load COVERED in orange splotches Envy
I haven’t tried to rewash it all yet as I need to take photos of everything, but assuming the clothes are ruined, what should I get as compensation?
None of it is important or expensive, a pair of men’s ASOS trousers, a men’s H&M shirt, baby clothes from H&M and Sainsbury’s, primark T-shirt but to replace it all new would probably be £100+. Obviously it’s not worth £100 now though...
I’ll email the company but I’m guessing I shouldn’t just accept a £20 voucher...

What does it say on the washing label

KitKat1985 · 29/05/2020 12:47

What are the washing instructions on the jumpsuit? Does it specify wash separately?

RoseAndRose · 29/05/2020 12:47

What does the washing label say?

Wash at 40 with similar colours, which I did

OP posts:
DahliaDay · 29/05/2020 12:50

Does it say ‘wash with like colours’?

DahliaDay · 29/05/2020 12:51

Lol x post

RyanStartedTheFire · 29/05/2020 12:51

Could you put a picture up OP?

BlueEggsAndSpam · 29/05/2020 12:58

Can’t put a picture up right now, but I’ll try later.
The ‘ruined’ clothes are mainly pinky/ red, one royal blue which now has dark patches and a couple of green things.

None you should have used a colour catcher sheet with all new clothes for the first few washes

Chloemol · 29/05/2020 13:20

If it’s rust coloured, then in my mind pink, red, green and royal blue are not similar colours, therefore you didn’t follow directions. I am amazed you think you deserve compensation,

highmarkingsnowbile · 29/05/2020 13:21

None. FFS, everything's about what you can get after you make a cock up.

Yelllow · 29/05/2020 13:22

None. Clothes sometimes bleed colour after the first time you wash them. Your mistake.

Concestor · 29/05/2020 13:22

I would want to be compensated so I could replace the ruined clothes. You washed it on its own first, then put it in with dark colours. No one would expect you to only wash it with rust colours! No one washes each colour separately even on here, surely?

I'd get in touch with pictures asking for full replacement value and see where the conversation goes.

HappyHammy · 29/05/2020 13:25

Rust I would have only washed on its own or with red. It always runs. Can you just rewash everything with a colour catcher sheet. I would not think of compensation but if they have offered voucher I would just accept it.

Earnsomething · 29/05/2020 13:26

Surely if you washed with like colours the "damage" wouldn't show?

HappyHammy · 29/05/2020 13:27

Maybe the other colours also ran

Elouera · 29/05/2020 13:27

TBH- It would NEVER occur to me to contact the company and expect compensation for my own action!

I use colour catches in every wash. You can buy a run sachet which might help remove the colour from the other clothes.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 29/05/2020 13:27

All colours are 'like' colours in my house OP, so I would have done exactly the same thing, especially on a second wash. But I fear the definition of 'like' colours is so narrow that you've no chance getting any compensation. Try a colour catcher.

Pipandmum · 29/05/2020 13:28

At most o think you would get a voucher as you say as a 'good will' gesture without admitting liability. It does seem odd to have bled to the extent you say though.
They may also suggest you claim on your household insurance (not worth it and your excess would probably be greater anyway).

Haretodaygonetomorrow · 29/05/2020 13:29

It should be labelled as wash separately although I doubt they’ll replace the value of the clothes it has run on.

BlueEggsAndSpam · 29/05/2020 13:38

Ok, my mistake, I don’t pretend to be any sort of domestic goddess Blush
I thought colour catchers were sort of an optional extra if you wanted to wash red and whites (for example).
We don’t produce much laundry so it’s lights, darks and colours in our house. I couldn’t make a purely red and rust load.
And I wouldn’t think to wash items on their own as it doesn’t seem very environmentally friendly.

That all sounds a bit goady, not my intention, I just genuinely clearly know nothing about laundry Confused

I imagine they'll send you a £10 voucher or something for goodwill, but this was your error - similar colours to rust will be browns and oranges and the whole point of "similar colours" is so that any runs won't show. There is no way you can argue that rust is a similar colour to pink, green or blue!

If you rewash the speckled items with a colour catcher sheet, the splodges may well come out. And wash the rust coloured item on its own or with actual similar colours in the future.

ouch321 · 29/05/2020 13:44

That is bad luck!!

I would not have put pinks in the same wash but it should have been ok with other reds and royal blues.

I only divide between
whites + lights
And
Brights + darks

I dont believe in the compensation culture but I would complain in this case and send pics of ruined garments.

maxonebitch · 29/05/2020 13:47

None, you have to be very dim to not wash dark or bright colours in their own for the first few washes. Learn from your mistake and move on.

BlueEggsAndSpam · 29/05/2020 14:00

I thought the pinks and reds were fine as pink / red / orange / yellow are similar pigments.

And the jumpsuit was washed once on its own, I didn’t realise it had to be washed on its own multiple times. I’ve clearly been lucky in the past because I’ve never ruined anything like this before. 🤦🏼‍♀️
