Gin and coffee - what brand(s), blend(s) are you using now ?

Just finished last year's Tanqueray and I would have bought another bottle but it's still full price everywhere (I'm cost-conscious) so I've plumped for the Morrison's London Dry. 43% so a decent kick to it and I've always been pleased with it before.

I'm using my cafetiere every day since about mid-March and I'm so far sticking to Morrison's Best Guatemalan ground coffee. I tried the Ethiopian blend but I found it a bit too fruity.

This might sound like an advert for Morrison's but I promise you it isn't. At least not intentionally Wink. It just happens to be my nearest supermarket.

I use stainless steel 'ice' cubes.

iklboo · 29/05/2020 13:41

Whitley Neill gin in all its varieties.

WildRosie · 29/05/2020 13:49

The cubes I cut from my blocks are around two or three inches long and about two inches wide and deep. One is enough. Any more would take up too much room in the glass. They take a while to melt.

Never tried steel ice cubes. Sounds like something out of Star Trek.

I'm one of those people who doesn't see any point in buying it

I was like that until I bought a couple of bags for a party and there was about half a bag leftover. It lasted for ages and I loved having the big ice cubes for my G&Ts. It's only a quid for a massive bag you'd need to get it home fast in this weather though.

I keep meaning to buy some more, but we've never got enough room in our freezer so I have to manage with my piddling little 'ice bottle' which makes about 12 tiny ice cubes that last for about 2 G&Ts so I have to make ice several times a week.

WildRosie · 29/05/2020 15:34

As I said Barbara, a fair choice if you use or need lots of ice, such as for a party. I live alone and don't use that much ice but I try to make big clear lumps as best I can. My freezer compartment is scarcely big enough as it is.

The steel cubes look fancy and are versatile. I don't think I want to pay £36 though; I expect they eventually pay for themselves.

I've actually been making my own gin as of late used this kit its a learning curve but it beats making another bloody cake :)

WildRosie · 29/05/2020 15:51

When I saw your post, jack, it occurred to me that home distillation is illegal. Then I saw the gins are vodka based. I hope that doesn't taint the flavour.

Ophir, DH got it as it was on offer. It's ok, although to me once it's got tonic in it doesn't really taste of anything. Coffee wise our local Tesco rotate what's on offer, azera or millicano. It's millicano's turn now so that's what we have, but we prefer azera.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 29/05/2020 16:10

Park Gin (made in Banff, Canada) and Nespresso Ethiopia.

AgeLikeWine · 29/05/2020 16:15

I’m currently working my way through a bottle of Gin Mare, which is very herby, spicy gin from Barcelona. It’s different, and absolutely delicious.

My current favourite coffee is Lidl’s deluxe Guatemalan. It’s very nicely balanced, and a bargain at the price.

JayeAshe · 29/05/2020 16:16

@Ginfordinner I'm no expert but it tastes the same to me Blush . The label has medals on it and everything....

@stargirl1701 I came on here to say Lussa gin too, it's divine.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 29/05/2020 17:26

Coffe is whatever fresh is going, or azera for instant. Tea is usually Yorkshire gold. Gin is currently Hendricks and tonic, ice optional but nice to have.

Bargainhuntbore · 29/05/2020 18:53

Aberfalls gin. Live it and Welsh.

Kenko red for me but on weekends its a cafetière with something from Aldi

Bargainhuntbore · 29/05/2020 18:54

Oh and i have a homemade blackberry gin brewing too.

kingkuta · 29/05/2020 19:03

Bargainhuntbore Abel falls is 3 bottles for £45 and free postage on the link barberaofseville posted earlier, all types

You are putting way too much tonic in it if this is the case

kingkuta · 29/05/2020 19:06

Aberfalls

Frokni · 29/05/2020 19:13

To be fancy- kew garden gin. Lovely taste, box and bottle

SauvignonBlanche · 29/05/2020 19:24

@weepingwillow22

I really like Gin Mare with rosemary in it.
This is my favourite but I'm also enjoying the Whitley & Neil Gooseberry gin.

I haven’t been drinking any particular coffee - sorry.

Maria53 · 29/05/2020 19:29

Orkney gin for me, it just gorgeous: www.orkneygincompany.com/

I also like Tanqueray, Hortons and Edinburgh gin but the Orkney gin still beats them all. If only I lived closer!

GuyFawkesDay · 29/05/2020 19:29

Currently between Bombay Sapphire, Tanqueray Raigpur, Gordon's lemon and an Aldi Cucumber one which is really very like Hendricks.

I buy Waitrose now tonic in the tins. They're bigger than the fevertree tins, which require me to use 2 as I like a long G&T. Plain gins I like the Sainsbury's taste the difference or Bombay Sapphire. At £16 it's as cheap as Aldi/Lidl ones but it's really very good, it's smoother to me.

I am no coffee connoisseur, but I'm drinking Sainsbury's own barista style instant and it's lovely.

BillBaileysBum · 29/05/2020 19:33

Adnams Copper House.
Best gin in the world.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 29/05/2020 19:52

I forgot to mention on one of the many gin threads there are Grin someone recommended Isle Of Harris. It was all over the theatre bar when I went to see Hamilton and I remembered so I had some, then later bought a bottle myself, it's amazing with grapefruit. Oh and Cotswold gin is also up there too.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 29/05/2020 19:59

The Adnams Copper House is beautiful billbailey but their First Rate is nectar of the gods. I buy a bottle every time I go to Southwold.
