Have you been wearing sunscreen during lockdown?

Especially if you aren't going out much? I've been working from home with 2 DC and barely get the time to step out, apart from hanging up the laundry.
I never seem to grasp the sunscreen rules and always doubt if I'm overdoing it or not Confused

So here my questions...

  1. Do you wear sunscreen all through the year? Even when at home? (our family room is south facing and can get really hot - not sure if this is a factor)
  2. What factor do you use during the winter?
  3. I know I'm supposed to have a separate sunscreen and not rely on what's in my moisturiser, but can I rely on these if sitting at home or during the winters?
  4. Your best sunscreen brand?

Thanks Smile

I don’t put sunscreen on if I’m just in and out of the garden for short periods ie hanging out washing but if I’m going out to sit in it for a while or out on dog walk etc I do. I use Tropic Sun Day.

RedRed9 · 28/05/2020 22:29

May-September I wear sunscreen pretty much every day. I put it on instead of moisturiser after a shower in the morning.

I don’t bother if
A) I’m not going out that day.
B) The weather is bad.

I do wear factor 15 on my face all year round as it’s in my face moisturiser and makeup but otherwise I don’t wear sunscreen in winter unless I’m going to be out in the elements all day and it’s uncharacteristically bright/sunny.

  1. No - Only when I think I'll burn or wrinkle much worse without it. Certainly not in winter.
  2. not applicable, dunno what SPF I use in summer, whatever is in the cupboard. I try to use titanium oxide/zinc oxide ones and they are always very high SPF (I don't like the chemical barrier ones so much)
3 & 4. I have no opinion. What are you trying to achieve by wearing suncream?

I thought UV light couldn't get thru glass.

I don't think there are sunscreen rules?? Also I don't wear sunscreen for sitting in my sunny living room...

I slap on a bit of factor 15 if I'm out in the garden for a few hours and it's really beating down. Probably don't worry too much if its cloudy although I know that is against the 'rules'

JoeExoticsEyebrowRing · 28/05/2020 22:37

I have actually started using sunscreen every day. I've been a bit more conscious of my skincare during lockdown, because I have a bit more time, and have decided that at nearly 40 I want to do everything I can to stop the ageing thing and SPF seems a pretty easy way to do that! So I am in the habit now, I just use a cheap Boots one.

Lavenderpurple · 28/05/2020 22:38

I wear it on really hot days when I know I’m going to be in it a lot for example a day out. Or during lockdown, I’ve been having a sunbathe and have put some on then. If I’m gardening, hanging laundry, in and out then I don’t bother. Toddler dd has it put on pretty much everyday that we’re outside this time of the year.

Soph88888 · 28/05/2020 22:38

I’ve sat out in the garden for at least 5 hours every sunny day, no sun cream and more recently have been in my paddling pool. And I’m soo tanned
I’ve been using aftersun and keeping skin hydrated but the sun here isn’t that strong and I don’t burn

Soph88888 · 28/05/2020 22:38

I do cover my face however, as jot up for wrinkles

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 28/05/2020 22:40

I wear factor 15 in moisturiser on my face most days but hardly ever on body unless out in it all day

DS has it on after we’ve been out for 30 mins if out for long time but doesn’t if we’re just going for quick walk in them pram

Suffered vit d deficiency and still on medication so try to make sure I get some sunlight on skin each day without sunscreen

delilahbucket · 28/05/2020 22:48
  1. I only wear it if I'm going to be out longer than 15 minutes. In Winter this is a rarity so I don't use suncream. UV light does not come through glass so you will not get burned in your house.
  2. I don't use it in Winter
  3. if you're not leaving the house you don't need suncream on, so irrelevant, but in Spring and Summer I don't use a moisturiser, just a lightweight sunscreen
  4. Piz Buin ultra light fluid and the light face fluid
Strokethefurrywall · 28/05/2020 22:49

Blimey, I live in the Caribbean and don't put it on every day.

Only if I'm going out for prolonged periods or actively sunbathing between 11-3pm.

Other than that, I don't worry about it, I wear a hat and sunglasses.
It's nearly 5pm here and the UV index is 2, evening sun in the sky so don't have any on kids either, especially when they going in the pool.

Tulip100 · 28/05/2020 22:52

Yes every time I go out now as doing a skin regime that makes my skin more prone to sun damage (sensitive to UV).

I use Dermalogica spf. Assuming it does the job, I love it.

PickAChew · 28/05/2020 22:53

I'm so fair that I glow in the dark and also sun allergic so I wear sun block whenever I'm out in the sun for more than 20 minutes from May to august and avoid midday sun. I can burn on a cloudy day, in June.

But no, I do t wear it indoors because I don't need to.

magicmallow · 28/05/2020 22:53

I understand computers emit UV light (could be wrong) so it is worth wearing if you work on one! Even inside / in winter etc.

BillysMyBunny · 28/05/2020 22:54

I never wear suncream in the winter or on cloudy days. I only tend to wear it if it’s a sunny day and even then only if I’m likely to be outside for more than 10-15 minutes at a time. Today it’s been very sunny and I spent a lot of time outside so I put sun cream on but that was probably only for the third or fourth time this year. I tend to wear nivea factor 30, although if on holiday somewhere very hot I might wear factor 50.

Incrediblytired · 28/05/2020 22:54

We are virtually translucent so yes! I will burn in no time in 20 degrees though

Russellbrandshair · 28/05/2020 22:56

I wear helliocare tinted spf 50. I wear it all year round whatever the weather. My skin is amazing and I look much younger than I am. The sun is terribly ageing

PickAChew · 28/05/2020 22:56

Though, having had a sunny early spring, I haven't had any PLE, this year. The only way to prevent it is gentle exposure and our usual cold, wet spring weather in the north doesn't allow that.

JoeExoticsEyebrowRing · 28/05/2020 22:56

UV light does not come through glass so you will not get burned in your house.

UVB (which causes burning) does not penetrate glass, but UVA (which causes ageing and cancer) does. Obviously this is only a problem if you are sitting by a window all day, but it does penetrate. UVA also penetrates clouds so can affect the skin in winter as well.

The thing is, most people don't wear sunscreen all year round, most people age 'normally' and most people don't get skin cancer, so it is a balance! But like I said, I have just got in the habit now. But I am kind of missing any tan on my face!

This is true. There was a famous photo they did of a truck driver who had one side of his face all wrinkled and the other smooth due to sun coming constantly through his driving window. Glass does NOT stop UVA rays

Russellbrandshair · 28/05/2020 23:04

Found it! Here is the photo - it’s quite shocking what UVA can do!

imsooverthisdrama · 28/05/2020 23:04

Of course, people that say that they don't wear any sun cream look really old.
The sun ages you get it on . Grin

Russellbrandshair · 28/05/2020 23:04

Have you been wearing sunscreen during lockdown?
StillMedusa · 28/05/2020 23:06

I wear it on my face if I remember to put some on before walking the dog... I'm not great at remembering I admit and currently I'm wall to wall freckles from all the sunshine. I don't sunbathe but I'm outdoors at work a lot, outdoors at home and am probably looking prune like as a result.

However I'm also chronically low vit D and the docs told me I need to be out with bare face and bare arms every day in the sunshine as well as my tablets!

I'm 52 and fair, freckled and wrinkly but don't really care!

BinkySodPlop · 28/05/2020 23:10

Yes. I wear spf50 every day. I use Ultrasun anti aging moisturiser, which is one a day stuff, so it goes on in the morning and protects all day. It has 95% uva block. If it's very intense sun, I will top up. I burn very easily and have loads of pigmentation and other visible damage.
