Have you been wearing sunscreen during lockdown?

Especially if you aren't going out much? I've been working from home with 2 DC and barely get the time to step out, apart from hanging up the laundry.
I never seem to grasp the sunscreen rules and always doubt if I'm overdoing it or not Confused

So here my questions...

  1. Do you wear sunscreen all through the year? Even when at home? (our family room is south facing and can get really hot - not sure if this is a factor)
  2. What factor do you use during the winter?
  3. I know I'm supposed to have a separate sunscreen and not rely on what's in my moisturiser, but can I rely on these if sitting at home or during the winters?
  4. Your best sunscreen brand?

Thanks Smile

@MandalaYogaTapestry honestly, you are doing your health a massive disservice, better to have a few lines than a serious vitamin D deficiency in old age.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 29/05/2020 08:16

Grobag I am not covering my body and I run outside daily in a cropped top and shorts. That's a lot of Vit D.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/05/2020 08:20

I don't wear it at home because I live in a flat but I wear it when I go out as I'm very fair skinned and prone to burning. I'm not fussed about brands, I use SPF 50.

I take a vitamin D supplement though.

Yester · 29/05/2020 08:28

Absolutely not.
I always wear if going to be exposed for more than 20 mins in full.sunshine over 20 degrees.
For 2 main reasons:

  1. sunscreen (unless the reflective sort that would look weird to wear off a beach/ski slope) is absorbed into the blood stream. As most contain a plethora of chemical compounds that aren't meant to be in re blood stream a regular exposure to these unnecessarily (particularly for vanity) seems ridiculous.
  2. Vit D deficiency potentially is a factor in more deaths than skin cancer. Yes protect your skin and don't get skin damage but not so that you dont get enough Vit D.
ClientQ · 29/05/2020 08:31

I'm using retinol so I'm fairly strict with it
I don't wear it if I'm inside but yes if I'm going out
Not in winter as I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark so I see no daylight
Redhead so no vitamin d issues (levels are fine)
SPF 50 on my face. Same on my body in summer if I will be outside longer than 10 mins as that's when I start burning

Duchessofealing · 29/05/2020 08:39

I wear factor 50 religiously on my face and neck all year round. Having seen a beloved family member die from skin cancer it’s not a risk I want to take. I only put on my body if I’m outside more than 30 mins and it’s very hot (I also take vitamin D supplements).

onemouseplace · 29/05/2020 08:41

Yes, SPF everyday as I use retinol and am in and out of the garden all day at the moment.

EveryoneLoves09876 · 29/05/2020 08:42

Apparently anything under 25 isn't doing anything.

Normally a moisturiser with 25. When really sunny and hot, 30 up to 50 depending.

InOmniaParatus42 · 29/05/2020 08:44

@Flittingabout Thanks! I'll have a look at that site.

Genuine question: is a vitamin D supplement not enough to maintain levels? A few years back I was deficient and was put on a high dosage for some time. Once my levels were within acceptable range, I continued taking the supplements, but of a lower dosage.

Anyone have a good one for winter months?

JonHammIsMyJamm · 29/05/2020 08:54

I wear factor 50 facial sunscreen (inc neck, ears & chest) daily from about April-end Sept plus any freak sunny days (Shiseido). Rest of the year I wear an spf30 face cream (la Roche Posay).

If I’m going to be out in the direct sun and the UV index is high, I use ultrasun Spf30 on my body (neck down basically). I apply it in the morning, like a body lotion, after a shower.

Bloodybridget · 29/05/2020 08:58

No, haven't used any yet. If it's very hot in the garden we put the sunshade up, and out and about, stay on the shady side of the street.

aintnothinbutagstring · 29/05/2020 09:07

Its only my face that has spf15 all year round as most facial moisturisers seem to contain it. Lancaster SPF15 on the arms (I don't expose my legs much) and neck if it seems very sunny and I'm out for a while. Wouldn't bother if only out for a short time. More concerned over getting enough vitD as read somewhere that supplementation is not a good substitute for time spent in the sun which activates many more vital processes in the body than taking a pill would. Don't mind a few wrinkles, but at 35 the wrinkles I do have seen to be more from expression (must stop frowning!)

Redwren · 29/05/2020 09:08

I've probably worn suncream 10 days during lockdown. I'm very pale though and burn easily. Both my mum and dad have had skin cancer so I like to be protected. I use f30.

I spend most of the day outside. I go for a run at 6am where I dont wear suncream, put it on for the day, usually shower at 5pm (i feel all icky after a day in the sun) and then usually have a walk after dinner for 30mins where i dont wear suncream. Same for my kids, they were f30 or f50 during the day but dont wear anything for our after dinner walk

Redwren · 29/05/2020 09:10

I take a vit D supplement to

sleepwhenidie · 29/05/2020 09:17

On face, La Roche Posay Anthelios f50 every day, all year round on top of serum, instead of moisturiser. Body, Nivea protect and bronze (not self tan) factor 30 from whenever it gets warm enough for me to be playing tennis, running or dog walking in sleeveless tops/tennis skirt. My vit D levels are fine.

Bargainhuntbore · 29/05/2020 09:31

Last time i wore sunscreen was in 1995. Last abroad holiday to the sun. Don’t bother at home. I like the sunshine and warm weather but i don’t Like sitting/laying in it to catch a tan. That bores me.

I live in Wales. No real need for SPF in the winter😂

AdalindMeisner · 29/05/2020 09:37

If we are playing in the garden and the sun is shining but not hot then no to sun cream especially at the minute (having seen there maybe a link with reduced vit d and respiratory issues). If gray, then no to sun cream.

If it is very hot like it is at minute, I put factor 50 on dd2(5) face, back of neck and hands, shoulders if uncovered (places that will burn easiest) then she will have an hour with just that and then I will put sun cream on the rest of her if it is height of the day. But after 3 I don't really bother too much .

For me I use factor 50 on easy to burn bits (which fir me includes forearms aswell as the others mentioned on dd2 above).

Dd1(17) barely leaves the house but puts it on her face as she burns in the blink of an eye. (Factor 50)

Dd1, dd2, and me are all quite fair (although dd2 get colour rather than freckles unlike me and her sister Grin)
⁰⁰
DH doesn't bother ever - he is quite tanned year round even though he barely gets outside because of work.

AdalindMeisner · 29/05/2020 09:38

Oh and we all (except dh) take vit d supplements)

noseresearch · 29/05/2020 09:43

No I've been too lazy even though I should be applying it Blush

What puts me off is that the majority of sunscreens I've tried aren't cosmetically elegant, even when the online reviews rave about being matte and invisible. (Admittedly I have dark and acne prone skin) I have wasted so much money through trial error

I always end up greasier (when I already have disgustingly oily skin in summer) and/or with an obvious white cast. Plus unlike in the winter I can't easily blot my shiny face without removing the spf, then it's a faff to layer more on top

The best I've found is LRP's Shaka fluid (no white cast at all!!) but even that leaves me greasy I look like I'm sweating.

JoeExoticsEyebrowRing · 29/05/2020 09:47

I don't think you need to wear it indoors unless you are literally sat by a window all day, but as I said, I am just in the habit of wearing it now otherwise I will forget to do it when I actually need it! Having seen that picture of the truck driver, I am convinced that sunscreen is the easiest route to eternal youth mwahahahahaha!

I don't wear it on my arms/legs etc unless I'm going to be out in hot sun for a prolonged period so hopefully get some Vit D that way, plus I started taking a multi vit supplement last year anyway.

BillThePony · 29/05/2020 09:48

I wear it all over in the summer spf50, I have had melanoma twice so I have to. In the winter I wear 30 on my face, ears and neck.

SweetPetrichor · 29/05/2020 09:49

I only put it on if I'm going to be in the sun for prolonged periods. I don't wear it on a day to day basis. I don't like being in the sun so never stay out long enough to even get a tan, never mind get burned...I'm a summer hater! I don't care about wrinkles.

Bluebellpainting · 29/05/2020 09:57

Everyday but I have very fair skin and burn if out in strong sun for too long. Been spending lots of time outdoors. I’ve been exposing myself to the sun for a short period without sun cream for vitamin d (about 20minutes or so) and then wear suncream after that for the rest of the day. I take Vit d supplement as well but also aware I need less sun exposure than others for vitamin D as how efficiently you make it depends on your skin tone.
