I think both of these chaps and Jenny Harries should get an honour after this crisis is over - knighthood, OBE?? What do you think?

OP posts:
nasalspray · 28/05/2020 19:55

What for?

Genuinely

Bluntness100 · 28/05/2020 19:55

I agree, I think they have stepped up and hugely disrupted their personal lives during this.

Crunchymum · 28/05/2020 19:55

Why?

Unless its for putting up with BJ Grin

OhhhPeee · 28/05/2020 19:56

I’m a Van Tam fan, myself.

Crunchymum · 28/05/2020 19:57

@Bluntness100

I've stepped and disrupted my personal life too, sign me up for a Knighthood Shock

carly2803 · 28/05/2020 20:40

for not rolling eyes at BJ - yes - for that alone!

carly2803 · 28/05/2020 20:40

BigChocFrenzy · 28/05/2020 20:43

Yes, they've done a good job in a crisis and have probably saved the Uk from an even worse one

MuthaClucker · 28/05/2020 20:43

For what?

They seem like nice enough, intelligent blokes, but our records are not exactly exemplary are they?

KeepWashingThoseHands · 28/05/2020 20:46

As they said today, they present the science, they are not responsible for policy. If someone doesn't listen/act it's not their fault.

I agree OP. Only sensible things said at the briefings is from those two.

bigchris · 28/05/2020 20:49

So did they say here immunity in the beginning or not

And who gave the green light for the Liverpool match and Cheltenham or did Boris ignore them ?

I definitely remember them starting with the herd immunity thing

KeepWashingThoseHands · 28/05/2020 20:59

Sweden's whole plan was (still is?) herd immunity and I suppose was relative to what was known at the time.

madasamarchhare · 28/05/2020 21:19

I love it when Whitty and Valance are at these briefings. They talk so much sense. They are cautious, they have admitted that is their job. Loved their answer tonight when the journo asked for their response about the Cummings saga.

Ohlordysugarandspice · 28/05/2020 21:19

Why? We've had the highest death toll in Europe. We've had around 40,000 deaths. 2nd highest number of deaths in the world and we're not exactly a massive country population. I'm not saying they aren't working hard but my God that would be an utter slap in the face of every family who have lost someone.

itsgettingweird · 28/05/2020 21:36

Whitty and Valance said tonight - quite clearly - they don't make policy. They cannot be held responsible for decisions leading to high death rates - if - the science they gave advised against or cautioned against the policy made.

But having read the earlier sage reports it's seems they are pretty much - if you do x we predict y. If you do a we predict b. If you do a and b then c may be a better outcome.

Love the idea of them getting one just for having to put up with Boris.

Perhaps the queen should give the entire British nation one? Grin

EnlightenedOwl · 28/05/2020 21:38

What for?

DufferedUp · 28/05/2020 21:56

Sir Patrick Vallance is already knighted, hence the Sir prefixing his name. Totally crushing on Witty though.

SnoozyLou · 28/05/2020 21:58

We have the second highest covid death rate capita of any country in the world. If that’s a good job, I’d hate to see a bad one.

Not that I blame them per se. We don’t actually know what goes on behind closed doors - what advice they gave and what was ignored. I’m not sure we should all be patting each other on the back though. I just think, unlike countries like Italy and Spain, our horror stories have for the most part been swept under the carpet.

itsgettingweird · 28/05/2020 22:18

I think today's briefing showed they do actually know what they are doing and that they are vital.

They didn't stand up and say Boris was wrong. But they very clearly warned us using science that confidence in this being all right is probably premature if we don't continue to exercise caution.

MuthaClucker · 28/05/2020 22:27

If they stand shoulder to shoulder with the Government reps, and do not challenge the guidance, then they are complicit.

strugglingwithdeciding · 28/05/2020 23:34

@Ohlordysugarandspice please check out the deaths per capita and we are not the highest why do people insist on spouting this . Just read a newspaper headline ,plus you can't compare for a long time as there will be variables to take into account and we also don't know enough about the virus yet to make proper comparisons

strugglingwithdeciding · 28/05/2020 23:35

@snoozylou where are you getting that from as worldometer does not have as second

Ohlordysugarandspice · 29/05/2020 06:58

Strugglingwithdeciding - I don't give a flying flip whether it's per capita or simply number of deaths. Our death toll is shameful and an utter travesty and many thousands could have been prevented had it not been for the government and their associated scientists. They locked down way too late due to not making their minds up on herd immunity and now seem to be doing herd immunity by stealth anyway. There has been nothing good in the handling of this.

SnoozyLou · 29/05/2020 09:25

@strugglingwithdeciding

In the course of a real life conversion, do you ask for citations? How irritating.

In answer to your question, the Financial Times, amongst various other sources. Sorry if you don’t find that as credible as the Worldometer website. Feel free to Google yourself next time.
