Can you do a full shop in Lidl?

During lockdown I've been getting Waitrose click and collect because it's quick and the only supermarket I can get a slot for but its costing us a fortune! I'm usually an Aldi/Sainsbury's person depending on how I feel but queues there are massive. We're a family of 4, kids are 11 and 12, are good eaters and I mostly cook from scratch. Can I get a whole typical weeks shopping at Lidl?

You can unless you want branded goods such as Robinson's cordial, Hellman's Mayo etc

chunkyrun · 28/05/2020 07:42

I could but my cats a snob and won't eat the food there

birkenstocks4ever · 28/05/2020 07:42

Not fussed about brands really and don't need toiletries, washing powder etc.

I can’t as they just don’t have the variety of things we buy. Love their bakery though.

Biancadelrioisback · 28/05/2020 07:46

I do, every week!

TwistyHair · 28/05/2020 07:47

Yes. Our Lidl also does branded things. Helmans, bisto. But not really toiletries.

AdoreTheBeach · 28/05/2020 07:49

They don’t have all that my family needs for a weekly shop. Depends upon what your usuals are. If you can change those, then in theory yes you could do your regular shop.

Horehound · 28/05/2020 07:49

Yep deffo.

NekoShiro · 28/05/2020 07:49

I would say you could if your very open to eating flexibly, I've only been into aldi/lidl a couple times and can't tell them apart but the ones I've been in have great bakery, okay alcohol aand wine, meh veg, I went in looking for cauliflower which they just didn't have in store and I've walked past a cardboard box full of strawberry boxes that were starting to go furry and sad, I did mention to a colleague so hopefully that was a one off. The meats basic but good every kind of meat you'd expect, same with cheese and dairy.

DustyOwl · 28/05/2020 07:49

It's the only supermarket we use on a regular basis. You have to be a bit flexible on what you cook with and we do cook a lot from scratch. We also have a great greengrocer and butcher nearby, which we sometime use, and I do a shop at another supermarket every couple of months to get the more unusual ingredients.

I just hate shopping and I can be in and out of Lidl very fast. I find the 15 types of butter a bit bewildering at larger supermarkets.

I always fail and come out with fruit, veg sliced meats, antipasti, chocolate and lots of things Ii didnt know I needed from the random aisle ofstuff in the middle. A hundred quid later and as I pack the car there is the quiet realisation that once again I have failed to get anything for dinner. This is why I shop online.

boatyardblues · 28/05/2020 07:51

Lidl fresh fruit and veg is like Russian roulette IMO. Some of it is great, but I’m not convinced our local store stores it well. It’s not unusual to find half your punnet of strawberries is furry in the middle when you get them home or a slimy pepper in your mixed bag. Careful inspection when choosing helps, but isn’t entirely foolproof.

theseriousmoonlight · 28/05/2020 07:51

I go to lidl just for their Portuguese custard tart thingys. But yes, you can do a full shop. They often have brands in with special flavours on offer but these change.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 28/05/2020 07:52

You can. I don't think the veg is great though to be honest. It goes off so quick!

Gammeldragz · 28/05/2020 07:52

Yes, I did it for 10+ years!
Did my full shop at Aldi yesterday. Sometimes I like to mix it up Wink

Destroyedpeople · 28/05/2020 07:53

Yes totally. The only thing you cant really get there are things like specific cuts of meat eg I like to get shin of beef.
You will save loads too.
Honestly I love lidl so much I should go and work in their advertising dept it's the best place for family shopping.

LittleCandle · 28/05/2020 07:53

If you're not a food snob, you'll find everything you need. Our Lidl is always spotless. The veg is amazing, the meat likewise and the bakery is to die for. The only thing to watch out for is the Middle of Lidl on Thursday and Sunday. That can bump up your shopping bill...

Destroyedpeople · 28/05/2020 07:54

The toiletries and washing powder things are brilliant too...

Nquartz · 28/05/2020 07:54

Definitely. They have more branded stuff than Aldi and if you are lucky a fresh bakery. I spend so.much less than other supermarkets and can get DH his beloved Walkers cheese & onion crisps

birkenstocks4ever · 28/05/2020 07:54

Thanks. I might give it a go and see how I get on. There's a decent farm shop close by that I can go to for fruit and vegetables if I'm not impressed by the Lidl stuff. Is it weird that I'm slightly excited about actually going to do a physical shop rather than an online collection? Smile

I am a desperate food snob and I love the place

MoltoAgitato · 28/05/2020 07:55

The only thing I can’t get in our Aldi is tofu, otherwise it is miles cheaper and every bit as good, if not better,

Snagscardies · 28/05/2020 07:57

If you can do a full shop in Aldi then you will be fine in lidl. Have they covered their bakery since corona? Ours is one of the new lidls with massive glass front, it's like a greenhouse and all the bakery is crawling with flies.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 28/05/2020 07:59

I like Lidl and we do shop there, however I usually have to go somewhere else for a few bits. They never have cauliflower, i think we've once found beansprouts and their potatoes go off within the week.

TooMinty · 28/05/2020 08:00

I have been managing to get a full weekly shop at Lidl every week since lockdown started. Sometimes need to be flexible about meals and they still don't have flour. There are some things they don't ever have, even pre lockdown e.g more unusual herbs and spices. Possibly that might vary from branch to branch?
