Can you do a full shop in Lidl?

During lockdown I've been getting Waitrose click and collect because it's quick and the only supermarket I can get a slot for but its costing us a fortune! I'm usually an Aldi/Sainsbury's person depending on how I feel but queues there are massive. We're a family of 4, kids are 11 and 12, are good eaters and I mostly cook from scratch. Can I get a whole typical weeks shopping at Lidl?

No, and I couldn’t in Aldi either. I could probably get most of it and then top up with a monthly trip to a bigger supermarket and an Asian supermarket.

What brands do you get in lidl, do you get lurpak, kellogs, heinz or hp sauce?

birkenstocks4ever · 04/06/2020 06:28

@ssd I got Heinz beans and ketchup, Hellmans mayo, Walkers crisps, Muller yoghurts and Pepsi Max yesterday. They also had Andrex and Comfort but can't think of any others I saw

Very very nearly. We have been doing a fortnightly Lidl shop to restrict going out as much as possible and there's some things that I can't get but they aren't exactly make or breaks (tinned jackfruit and orzo pasta lol) I get a local fruit and veg delivery in between but it's all stuff that would be available at lidl if we were willing to go out more. Oh and I also have a cat food snob so having to do bulk buy from the pet shop.

WomanIsTaken · 04/06/2020 08:15

Ssd and yes to Lurpak.

imsooverthisdrama · 04/06/2020 08:22

You can but I don't know if it's just when I go but loads of stock missing sometimes.
I went yesterday no eggs and there was a lot of alcohol missing.
So I got most of a full shop then called into Tesco to get everything else I needed which was fine as no queue .

I'll need to try lidl on my next big shop then. Ds used to work near one and I loved popping into get their yogurts when I dropped him off.. But I can't remember what else is in there. Thanks for letting me know.

I know aldi is cheap but I don't like a lit if their own brand stuff.

Price wise is aldi and lidl comparable?

ssd · 04/06/2020 09:07

Sorry for typos

@birkenstocks4ever, what did you spend at lidl compared to waitrose?

birkenstocks4ever · 04/06/2020 09:45

Well when I was originally going to do the whole shop at waitrose it was £170 - we've been spending 150-170 a week. I still spent 41 at waitrose on some bits and then a trolley full (literally I was carrying stuff in my arms as there was so much) came to 102 in Lidl. It was a proper full weekly shop we needed - fruit, veg, bread, meat, stuff for lunches, beans, tinned tomatoes, couscous, pasta, cheese, yoghurts, butter, soft drinks, wine, cereal, loo roll, crisps & snacks, tea & coffee pods. I was impressed. I'll definitely go there again - i reckon we'd save £50ish a month. And after lockdown I'll probably switch between Aldi, Sainsburys and Lidl depending on how the mood strikes me

Ooh and I got self raising flour - haven't been able to get that anywhere!
And a couple of make up brushes because they were cheap and bogof 🙄
And organic coconut sugar because I was curious to see what it was like

In my experience, no. Lidl are great, but they stock a limited range and there are significant weaknesses in their offer, eg beers & fresh seafood.

I buy lots of basics at Lidl, and their themed weeks are always an interesting way of trying something new, but I don’t get everything there. In normal times I also go to M&S, Waitrose, farm shops, markets etc top up with yummy treats.

ginghamstarfish · 04/06/2020 10:01

I think shop size (and stock) varies from town to town. Ours is smallish and I can't get everything I need, so maybe 75% Lidl, the rest from Sainsburys.

ssd · 04/06/2020 10:18

@birkenstocks4ever, that's a good saving to be made then.

I'm just wondering where would be the best shop to get all the shopping just now? I usually go to a few shops, depending on what we need. But always trying to save money.
I think asda would be best for getting everything, but I've heard it's awful inside just now and I've got health anxiety and really don't want to feel stressed in a shop.

I'll try lidl next and see how it goes.

Igneococcus · 04/06/2020 10:33

some bakery items eg packets of choc chips

I buy choc chips at Lidl, they have dark, milk and white versions. Lidl also has what Germans call "Kuvertuere" which is chocolate that melts better and is used in baking, again they have it in dark, milk and white.
Our Lidl is huge and newthough, best fruit and veg section too, but that is rural Scotland with limited choice otherwise.

Bluesheep8 · 04/06/2020 11:18

Yes? I do my full shop in Aldi so I don't see why Lidl would be any different.
