Next door house woes

Nextdoorclash · 27/05/2020 14:48

Next door have extended front, side, back ways. We didn’t challenge plans as we are looking to do work ourselves but finished house is (obviously imho) a complete eyesore. Has gone out of look of rest of road, think big fake Tudor in a road with no big fake Tudor. Is painted grey and has up lighting that changes colours at night. They are now in process of putting in electric 6 foot gates when no other house has these.

The rest of the road is a pretty wisteria covered semi rural area. We moved here as we love the area.

Do we have any option apart from move? I know we could have challenged but didn’t realise how would actually look irl.

Any ideas? Is actually really bothering me (first world problems I know)

At least they are the most likely to be burgled!!
Await a House Name going up op..
Maybe make one up on their behalf?? Keep you amused!!
Upyourownarse Manor?

Nextdoorclash · 27/05/2020 14:59

Ohhhhh I hadn’t thought of a house name too Grin

In all seriousness has anyone had something similar and grown not to care?

Just scorn & despise them. I would - some people have no taste. It's not your problem really if they have ideas above their taste.

HopeYouStepOnALego · 27/05/2020 15:04

Seriously OP, what do you hope to achieve here? You say the building work is finished. You had your chance to oppose the plans but didn't. The words horse, stable door and bolted come to mind. Unless they've somehow infringed the planning regulations (ie built it 6ft higher than on the plans or something) then there's really nothing you can do here but learn to live with it. Or move.

Windyatthebeach · 27/05/2020 15:05

Maybe get yourself a Tudor hat for the garden??
Grin
Can't beat em join em!!

SeriouslySoDoneIn · 27/05/2020 15:07

Tbh what you think of it really isn’t important. Don’t understand why anyone would scorn and despise someone for having a home they liked. (And I say that as someone who lives in a tiny flat with absolutely no grandeur, before I get jumped on!)

I grew not to care, it took 4 months to get used to their ugly house. I also focused on making mine as lovely as i could. If there is any way to mask, disguise or distract from it, like if the garden view looks onto it plant hedges or bushes or a feature, or a trelis etc to distract that might help.
Im sure you already know that if there is any preservation, planing permission or building regulations breaches you could try reporting them. Other than that unfortunately bad taste, criminal as it may be is not a crime.

Oldraver · 27/05/2020 15:20

Can you see it when you're in your house ?

If it's galring at you morning noon and night then learn to live with it

Nextdoorclash · 27/05/2020 15:22

I think we could challenge some regs (they admitted themselves the builder got some wrong) but really don’t want to fall out. We are pleasant enough but the guy can be quite in your face, so worry he may become aggressive.

I get no crime but is just not the place I fell in love with. Others have also commented how out of place it is but we are right next door 😬

Laaalaaaa · 27/05/2020 15:22

Go bigger than them - build an even more ott extension.

Nextdoorclash · 27/05/2020 15:25

Haha it’s not just the size, it how it looks as much as that

OP posts:
Wagamamas · 27/05/2020 15:30

Oh it's awful.

On a plus notes it distinguishes them as the tacky family of the neighbourhood and yours will stand out more positively in contrast... clutching straws Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/05/2020 15:32

Bribe the neighbours across the road to paint the outside of their house orange and green stripes , your tardy NDN will have to look at this .

After your NDNs have been punished enough they can repaint .

BigusBumus · 27/05/2020 15:32

We live on a one track lane in an old barn surrounded by a Manor house, other old barns and little cottages. Its not a conservation area as its away from the rest of the village (which is).

Up the road someone has built a big modern white thing with extensive glass and stark lines. It looks like Tracey Island from afar. Must've cost millions and its actually hideous. The owners don't wave in their cars or anything like everyone else does. I just ignore them back now.

Nextdoorclash · 27/05/2020 16:09

I get everyone is different and has personal taste but seems selfish to be so obviously different to the surrounding already there

OP posts:
BigusBumus · 27/05/2020 16:14

@Nextdoorclash It is selfish I think. Ostentatious and attention seeking too. And in the case of mock Tudor, incredibly naff.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/05/2020 16:30

There's one near us that is huge , extended, angular and grey . (Unlike any of the other houses in the street)

They do decorations in a B-I-G way too. (Christmas, Hallowe'en)

wowfudge · 27/05/2020 16:36

How much does it impact when you are in your house and garden? I suggest planting/screening of some sort to minimise this. Ostentation and big security gates made me think your neighbours are potentially drug dealers, or just people with money and no taste.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 27/05/2020 16:39

I am surprised the exterior got planning approval, normally it has to be in keeping with the surrounding area, is the rest of the road full of real Tudor cottages etc?

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 27/05/2020 16:46

I would look at the approved plans on the local planning portal, there should be an exterior plan, if it is in breach of that you could complain but you will certainly be opening a can of worms on the neighbour relations front which could work against you whether you stay put or move I’m afraid.

BarbedBloom · 27/05/2020 16:51

It is selfish to build something totally different to the surrounding areas, but I think challenging now it is built just because you don't like it, rather than being upset with the regulation breaches is a bit petty, sorry. Plus it is a quick way to neighbor disputes as they will likely just wait for you to do anything wrong.

I would either move or just put up plants to hide it as much as possible. Unfortunately some councils aren't as bothered as others in making sure something fits the local area. Someone around here built a huge glass thing that looks like a giant greenhouse. Neigubours objected as it didn't fit in but the council didn't care

Jaxhog · 27/05/2020 17:09

Photo. Or it didn't happen.

We need a photo so we can join you in sneering at their poor taste!

Nextdoorclash · 27/05/2020 18:04

I don’t think I would say anything as not looking to argue. Am hoping they will be civil if we do anything although wouldn’t look to do anything at all the same. Just really upset that they’ve pushed all the boundaries. I think you are right, the council doesn’t care. I just can’t shake the feeling that I don’t love my home as much as I did. Of course I can’t see it from inside but outside is just very very in your face 😢

OP posts:
hotstepper4 · 28/05/2020 17:32

Really couldn't care. As long as they're not blasting music, have a barking dog or starting fires in their garden id be counting my blessings
