Constantly dehydrated no matter how much water I drink

I don't know why but even if I drink litres and litres of water, it just goes right through me. By the afternoon, my mouth feels dry, my lips are peeling, my skin is dry, my scalp is dry and my hair is dry. Any tips to hydrate properly? It makes no difference whether I glug down large volumes of water or sip frequently throughout the day.

I think this can be a sign of illness - diabetes iirc. I think you should talk to a dr

Lordfrontpaw · 27/05/2020 00:07

Are you drinking tea and coffee too?

Nowthereistwo · 27/05/2020 00:08

This is a big sign for diabetes- please get it checked out as can cause serious damage if not managed

Do you go to the loo at lot as well?
Definitely call the GP, you'll need blood tests to check for diabetes or other causes.
Do you smoke? Drink a lot of caffeine?

Ukelele3 · 27/05/2020 00:11

No I rarely drink coffee and don't drink tea ever.

I've been checked for diabetes and don't have it - I've had this issue for a while now

Anything else going on - weight loss, vision problems, headaches?

QuestionableMouse · 27/05/2020 00:12

Try a sports type drink with salts and sugars.

When were you checked?

Lordfrontpaw · 27/05/2020 00:13

Infections that take a while to heal, tingling in hands/feet?

I have a raging thirst in the evenings and my skin is very dry at the moment because it is so bloody hot and muggy just now.

Lordfrontpaw · 27/05/2020 00:13

I find fruit (mango, melon, cucumber) is good for hydration.

mrsbyers · 27/05/2020 00:14

If you’re dehydrated water won’t rehydrate you past a certain point - try sipping some diahoralite and then drink water regularly in smaller quantities all day long - if you feel dry then you’re already dehydrated so the key is to chug water regularly. Drinking large volumes of water quickly will just deplete your body of electrolytes and salt which in turn will make you feel dehydrated.

Lordfrontpaw · 27/05/2020 00:18

You can make homemade rehydration drink - I litre water, 3 healed teaspoons sugar and 1/2 of salt. Tastes like bleugh but does the business. Mum used to do this with made up orange squash and salt (even worse).

Lordfrontpaw · 27/05/2020 00:19

God it was served up hot too. She used to chase up around in 40 degrees on holiday trying to make us drink it.

whatisheupto · 27/05/2020 00:20

Am I right in thinking you need salt too? Your body can't absorb the water without sufficient salt or something.....

Lordfrontpaw · 27/05/2020 00:23

The delightful drink I suggested has salt in it. We always thought mum has lost the plot giving us salty orange juice in the heat but she was onto something.

bogfi · 27/05/2020 00:27

it's dangerous to drink too much water, how much are you drinking?

Eckhart · 27/05/2020 00:29

Are you prone to catching colds and whatever virus is going round? D'you get night sweats? Are you constipated?

melodien · 27/05/2020 00:36

If you're pissing it all out surely you're not actually dehydrated. You just sound like you have dry skin and hair. Which can be just a skin type (not related to hydration).

CatAndHisKit · 27/05/2020 00:56

Eckhart what would be the reason for dryness in combination with night sweats?

CatAndHisKit · 27/05/2020 00:58

OP, dryness can be a thyroid issue - worth checking.

The only thing is, there is n treatment which isn't damaging/risky (well natural supplements might help if it's a mild disorder).

DisappointingAvocado · 27/05/2020 01:20

As a few people have mentioned, it's worth trying salt. I have to increase my intake at this time of year or I feel permanently dehydrated. Usually a pint of salty squash in the afternoon does the job.

Eckhart · 27/05/2020 01:41

@CatAndHisKit Yin deficiency. It's Chinese Medicine.

Ginkypig · 27/05/2020 01:41

How's your nose?

Mine has been broken and now needs fixed so I can breath through it.

Currently I unconsciously use my mouth when my nose is really bad.

Breathing like this leaves me with very dry mouth and lips and issues with my gums

KTB19 · 27/05/2020 01:56

I have an auto immune disease called Sjogrens which is where the immune system attacks the glands that produce moisture. I remember before I was diagnosed, my hair was dry and brittle, no amount of water could fix my dry mouth, dry nose and skin.

My eyes were dry because I wasn't producing tears and if I had money for every time a dentist accused me of not brushing my teeth properly, I would be rich. May mouth was so dry and I kept getting cavities.

I am now managed on medication and have to see a dentist every 4 months and I am under an eye specialist, but other than that, my life is pretty good now.

I am not saying its that, but your symptoms just sounded similar to mine. I would definitely visit your GP and mention these symptoms because it is worth ruling out.

JustStayHome · 27/05/2020 02:02

Please dont just make your own sugar / salt drink.
It could damage you
Even a salty meal can send me kidneys into over drive

What tests have you had?
How much water are you drinking?

You arent dehydrated, because if you was, you wouldnt pee it all out, your body would retain it
